I was in love with a woman named Charlene, a teacher in LA, in 1984. Sadly she died at an early age, 49. When we were together, she said I reminded her of the kind of man described in this song. It is, to this day, the sweetest thing a woman ever said to me.

Or at the very least a very young girl in love with a much older man who none of her family or friends approve of.
A woman sings about a man she loves...a man "with the child in his eyes"...meaning that she believes he still looks at the world with the sense of wonder and trust as a child would. Many adults lose that look in their eyes over time and become bitter and cynical. She felt very fortunate to love a man "with the child in his eyes"....and I was that man. She's waiting at the gate I am sure.
I read this just as the song switched across from Them Heavy People, and it really confused me as to who she was comparing you to. But then I heard the correct song, and it really is a lovely thing to say. It must bring a tear to your eye to hear this song. Best wishes from Sheffield, UK.

Kate was a genius like many other artists, but she's unique: composer, dancer, singer, producent, all. Unfortunately, there was not contests like X Factor or The Voice or other competitions. It could be otherwise mediated, she could living as a star.

When I was a young punk kid in the 70s I was into the usual heavies like Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin etc. I never gave Kate Bush a proper listen. I thought she was light weight and pretty boring. Man, how wrong was I ? She really is a musical genius. Her songs and voice are just breathtaking. This performance is incredible. What a talent.
Had the honor and privilege of not only hearing her perform but to also interview her! A rare talent with a genre all her own!!!

When I was dating my wife we used to meet in a nice wee pub in Glasgow every Wednesday night, the barmaid knew what we were drinking and always brought our first drinks over, then she always put this on the juke box, was so surreal, this went in for a year, takes me back to a great time in my life, aint music magical..
Now I'm 57 yrs, and still in love with her and her music since she first appeared.

I met my first love in 1980 when I was 16. To me, this beautiful song was about him. We had 10 amazing years before growing apart. When I recently heard he had tragically died I was heartbroken and guess what song suddenly came on the radio. I have never cried so hard. Kate, you amazing and beautiful person, you channelled love and passion and heartbreak and hope with this incredible song. Thank you!

THE most beautiful singing voice I have ever heard. Combine this with the fact that she wrote her own stuff and was a trained dancer she is a unique talent which just highlights the mediocrity we get from the conveyor belt of talent show contestants nowadays. And she's got the looks as well....
Five years on....and we're still even more littered in our lives with reality wannabee singers who basically can't. Talentless talent shows who throw us the occasional short lived gem BUT Kate is a unique diamond who'll last forever. Awaiting her next musical offering she is almost certain to be working on....

Beautiful. I was fourteen, under the covers with a flashlight, tuning in fuzzy, far away radio stations when I heard this the first time. She sang me to sleep and I have been haunted ever since. It took me many years to find out who she was (Such is the state of American radio)... Thanks Kate.

Such a special song to me at the moment - I'm in recovery both physical and mental for some pretty horrific combat injuries - this brings a tear to my eye but also reminds me of more innocent times - a 9 year old without a mark on his body - I'm broken now, shattered to pieces physically - mentally trying to stay strong - I love Kate Bush - reminds me of so much better times, helps me, somehow makes me feel loved - unfortunately I am so disfigured now that I doubt I will ever find love again....
Thank you, sir. I have been wondering for some time as to why this wonderful song (and 'Cloudbusting') bring me to tears. While 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' is a song about innocence, 'Cloudbusting' deals more with the loss of said innocence.

I was 17 at the time and she appeared on Saturday night LIve. I had never heard of her before but her performance was etched into my seventeen year old memory. I never heard of her again in the US, but 4 years later while an art student in NY I was able to purchase her albums, all of them. I have been a fan ever since. She is amazing right? A real gift to the world.
