I was in love with a woman named Charlene, a teacher in LA, in 1984. Sadly she died at an early age, 49. When we were together, she said I reminded her of the kind of man described in this song. It is, to this day, the sweetest thing a woman ever said to me.
Hmm, I always thought this was a song about a pedophile......... :) Or at the very least a very young girl in love with a much older man who none of her family or friends approve of.
A woman sings about a man she loves...a man "with the child in his eyes"...meaning that she believes he still looks at the world with the sense of wonder and trust as a child would. Many adults lose that look in their eyes over time and become bitter and cynical. She felt very fortunate to love a man "with the child in his eyes"....and I was that man. She's waiting at the gate I am sure.
I read this just as the song switched across from Them Heavy People, and it really confused me as to who she was comparing you to. But then I heard the correct song, and it really is a lovely thing to say. It must bring a tear to your eye to hear this song. Best wishes from Sheffield, UK.
Kate Bush...1979. I was 18 and totally fell in love with this song and Kate. I remember putting a weeks wages into a jukebox in the space of 1 night, constantly listening to this song. 35 years later....I still love this songs...and Kate. One very underrated artist. Mark
I love to hear that - I’m 18 now and I do the same!! But I must admit it’s slightly easier nowadays to listen to her whole discography as we have all these streaming services at hand 😅😅 It’s so cool that her music spans to fans of all ages
Kate Bush is a national treasure. The only one that has never let us down. She comes from a place of genius, born of such purity and elegance, that we can only listen and gaze in wonderment. She is to music and poetry what the moon and stars are to the night sky.
Never again will you find a songwriter so uniquely gifted and capable of translating a young heart's yearnings.into timeless imperishable music. What a song, and what a woman.
I totally agree.. Btw it's so sad that most poeple of the new generation aren't able to appreciate this kind of music. Or even different kind of styles in general. Only pop is allowed :/
Kate was a genius like many other artists, but she's unique: composer, dancer, singer, producent, all. Unfortunately, there was not contests like X Factor or The Voice or other competitions. It could be otherwise mediated, she could living as a star.
When I was a young punk kid in the 70s I was into the usual heavies like Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin etc. I never gave Kate Bush a proper listen. I thought she was light weight and pretty boring. Man, how wrong was I ? She really is a musical genius. Her songs and voice are just breathtaking. This performance is incredible. What a talent.
When I was dating my wife we used to meet in a nice wee pub in Glasgow every Wednesday night, the barmaid knew what we were drinking and always brought our first drinks over, then she always put this on the juke box, was so surreal, this went in for a year, takes me back to a great time in my life, aint music magical..
by the time she was 15 she had 40 songs written,,,,and when david Gilmore came to her house to see her talent she played this,,,,how history can be made
I met my first love in 1980 when I was 16. To me, this beautiful song was about him. We had 10 amazing years before growing apart. When I recently heard he had tragically died I was heartbroken and guess what song suddenly came on the radio. I have never cried so hard. Kate, you amazing and beautiful person, you channelled love and passion and heartbreak and hope with this incredible song. Thank you!
Amazing woman. The fact that she never capitulated to the draw of commercial radio but continued to produce her "art" is to be commended. I will always love her voice.
Such a special song to me at the moment - I'm in recovery both physical and mental for some pretty horrific combat injuries - this brings a tear to my eye but also reminds me of more innocent times - a 9 year old without a mark on his body - I'm broken now, shattered to pieces physically - mentally trying to stay strong - I love Kate Bush - reminds me of so much better times, helps me, somehow makes me feel loved - unfortunately I am so disfigured now that I doubt I will ever find love again....
Thank you, sir. I have been wondering for some time as to why this wonderful song (and 'Cloudbusting') bring me to tears. While 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' is a song about innocence, 'Cloudbusting' deals more with the loss of said innocence.
you will find love. a true love wouldn't even bat an eyelid at any of those things. they will love u for you. all of you. thank you for being so strong and doing what so many others could not. take care.
Possibly the most beautiful thing I've heard in my 60 years on earth, how wonderful and precious this young woman was (and still is)....Respect due from an Old Goth....And thank you for downloading....
It's really this simple.... she's one of God's gifts to us. Pure genius, just like many many years ago when they were worshipping the great composers of the world we are lucky enough to be living in the same era as who I believe is a musical legend and putting Kate Bush up there is not an understatement. Timeless. Effortless, Peerless
THE most beautiful singing voice I have ever heard. Combine this with the fact that she wrote her own stuff and was a trained dancer she is a unique talent which just highlights the mediocrity we get from the conveyor belt of talent show contestants nowadays. And she's got the looks as well....
Five years on....and we're still even more littered in our lives with reality wannabee singers who basically can't. Talentless talent shows who throw us the occasional short lived gem BUT Kate is a unique diamond who'll last forever. Awaiting her next musical offering she is almost certain to be working on....
Beautiful. I was fourteen, under the covers with a flashlight, tuning in fuzzy, far away radio stations when I heard this the first time. She sang me to sleep and I have been haunted ever since. It took me many years to find out who she was (Such is the state of American radio)... Thanks Kate.
Like most 54 year old men I have a 12 year old inside me! I like to think that hanging onto that childhood spirit keeps me sane & makes me part of the man I am - That wonder, intrigue & fun in life - NEVER Lose it!
This has been the song that always made me think of my wonderful soulmate for the past 32 years. "He's here again... the man with the child in his eyes." God bless you Kate... now that he is gone I still feel his presence every time I hear those hauntingly beautiful words. Wonderful song. Thank you Symphony for posting it.
Such a voice and songwriter. Ageless... this song show such maturity. Was one of my favs in late 70's... and remain so.... Easily amongst the top English songwriters of all time.... and clearly the best female songwriter. Under rated ... an English gem.
Wow. I’m completely mesmerised by this performance. Kate is a musical genius. The piano structure and arrangement is beautiful and her voice and lyrics are incredible as always. I had no idea she wrote this song at 13 years old, what a prodigy.
I have been lucky enough to have heard all the so called greats in the music world. But there is no one that could come close to Kate Bush. She really is the best of the best.....................................

Great comments folks. A special talent that's hard to put into words. We all have our memories of this song. I was 8 when this came out, am now 40. Just a moment in time, let's leave it at that.
I was 17 at the time and she appeared on Saturday night LIve. I had never heard of her before but her performance was etched into my seventeen year old memory. I never heard of her again in the US, but 4 years later while an art student in NY I was able to purchase her albums, all of them. I have been a fan ever since. She is amazing right? A real gift to the world.
I remember being a young man of 23 and having this huge crush on her the first time I saw her. Not only did I love the beautiful Kate, but I also loved her words and music. With this singular episode on Saturday Night Live I was hooked. The next day I went out and bought The Kick Inside. The cover alone gave me plenty of...shall I say, lustful fantasies? Here it is all those years later and I still marvel at the wonderful talent that she is. I only wish that she was more widely accepted in the U.S. I cannot see how anybody can down grade this song. It's an absolute masterpiece.

Magnificent. Really spellbinding. What an artist Kate Bush is.

This is not a song. This is an opus. And this is a masterpiece, thanks Kate !
She was only thirteen when Kate wrote this. True genius.
Rich Bryce yes there is kind of innocence about it
She had an artistic background. She'd be a prodigy if she didn't have an artistic background
13?
