Yes Mike, a lot of artists hide behind their recordings or the studio. Not John, he toured and toured and then toured some more. Out there at the front of stage, with his pure talent and incredible energy laid bare. An Aussie legend, so loved by his audience and fans. He has given Australia so much pleasure
Even as a baby John was great, just raw natural talent. I love John’s version of this song and although this was awesome his later(80’s-90’s) live versions of this were so much better, the energy and extra bits of vocal flare he put into it was so incredible. John is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time, and as far as I know he never had any singing training, just so breathing training, amazing. If you haven’t already check out John live doing “let me out” and “chain reaction”, just a couple of great ones. Let me out has an incredible guitar solo from Brett Garsed and chain reaction has an epic harmonica solo from Steve Williams.
@@beresfordthompson1370 Great choices and Playing to Win in 1990 Chain Reaction Tour. And the whole Expo 88 concert was just magical. He was just awe inspiring in that one. Love our John so much and his very loyal band ❣️ 😍♥️
Love the 'Art Work' Mike. Yes no messing around in those days no auto tune etc. John at that age wanted nothing more than to sing 'rock' lol. but having a shocking manager who wanted him to do more 'gimmicky' songs....but occasionally got to belt out his kind of music..... His 'Long Tall Sally is still to this day so darn good. I think he was about the same age as here. Thanks Mike. Oh and Bridge Over Troubled Water is also Epic
A baby Johnny! This is how I first saw John, I have been a fan since he started. One was written bu Harry Nilsson & originally sung on his album Aerial Ballet in 1968. It was then covered by Three Dog Night who we are all more familiar with. It reached number 5 in America in 1969.
Hi Mike! Thanks for reacting to our John! He would have been 20 here! He looks SO much longer than that though! Love your channel! Peace and Blessings to you and yours from Australia.
Thanks Mike, for another brilliant reaction to one of my requests. Anyone could tell, even way back then, that Farnsie had superstardom written in his DNA. His voice, his smile, his stage presence, all amazingly beautiful. I’m also gonna buy you a coffee and request the same song performed live in the ‘90’s with the audience all singing along. Also brilliant. It was great to see you smile, mate. And bopping along in the beginning. 😂 Keep up the good work, man. ❤️🇦🇺👍 PS. Yes, it’s a cover of the Three Dog Night song, which I also love. ❤️
Thanks Kimmy for the request. It's ridiculous - pitch correction and auto tune. That's why I don't listen to much modern music. You're talking about WingsofPegasus - Fil. He's done one on John in 2019 at the age of 70 and he proved even then it was all natural raw incredible voice and Johns key and power had not lessened at all. Our John is the best ever ❤😂🎉
@@SonofBuck-f7z He is excellent Mike. People don't like hearing the truth about their favs though, so glad our Aussies are so much more genuine than most 😍😍
The first time I heard this on radio (remember those things) it blew my 15 year old brain. There was just nothing like it. Had the great good pleasure of seeing John live many times, for me he is THE consumate entertainer. Mike, you'd want to check out one of John's contemporaries by the name of Russell Morris as well, particularly his Mr. America track, you'd dig it!
Hi Ned, Mike reacted to my request a few weeks ago, it was Russell Morris singing ‘Sweet Sweet Love’, the B&W version from 1971. ❤ Mike also reacted to ‘Everything’s Alright’ from Hey Hey it’s Saturday. Russell was a cast member and singer on that performance. ❤️🇦🇺👍
@@turdferguson400 Thanks for that old mate, I'll check them out. Mike's too bloody prolific, hard to keep up. Must be all that coffee we're pouring into him.
After watching this, may i suggest you watch the 1989 version, live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He belts that high note and it's just so engaging watching him sing it live. Thanks for reacting Mike...❤
@jeffwilson7100 I didn't know that. Such a shame. That's why you can't trust technology and why I have all my DVDs of everything I love to watch. Thanks for letting me know. 🙂 UPDATE...I just watched the song on youtube after I wrote this message in reply to yours.
Even at so young his love for performing shines. I actually like his later performance of this one as his voice matures but no doubt he had it from the start ❤❤❤
Originally a Harry Nilsson song . The 3 Dong Night version was a cover as well . The reason John Farnham version became the superior version in Australia! Well in the 50’s through to the early 70’s some songs from certain artist from USA and the UK would sit on shelf in limbo within Australian part on the record companies waiting for an Australian release date . So many Australian artist and music producers would go through these recordings to find anything that would be worth recording themselves quickly before the original would get an actual release date. This recording of Johnny Farnham version of One is fine example of that somewhat cheating but it worked process . Johnny Farnham also had much bigger hit than BJ Thomas with Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head in 1970 . By to the mid 70’s recording company headquarters in the USA and UK had caught on what Aussie artist was doing and made it a worldwide release dates .
One was written and recorded by Harry Nilsson in 1968. Johnny Farnham(as he was known then) released his cover of One in 1969, the same year Three Dog Night also released their cover.
John was only two years into his career at this stage, and is only 20 years old. My father wasn't overly impressed by John, until he saw him sing live in concert; he completely changed his opinion after that, you just can't get any more raw than a live performance.
Hi Mike, you might remember this song by Three Dog Night and have now heard John’s version, but this song was written by Harry Nilsson and first performed by him…. You may or may not be able to find a video of Harry singing this because he didn’t do a lot of live performances and never actually appeared in concert…. But This was a hit for John in Australia.
Interestingly. Both John and Three Dog Night, recorded their covers of Harry Nilsons song around about the same time. Three Dog Night released theirs a little earlier than John but were both in the australian charts at the same time. However while Three Dogs version was the one that was famous around the world, John's was the version that charted best in Australia and reached number 4 and three dogs reached 39 John did a lot of covers back then and they almost always charted better that the origianals.
The record industry released songs in Australia after the US, so local artists had a window to release stuff before the companies released the american version. Often the Aussies got more sales than the americans did in aussie.
"that guy", Fil...from his channel "Wings of Pegasus" is great for learning about what is done to music today ... to make it all "Perfect" (ruin it and take the "live" out of "live"). John has never needed any of that. It's sad that it's the norm for today.
You see, ONE (🤭) had to have actual talent and quality to make it back in the day. That's also my point about about auto tuning and remastering, when the powers that be, believe that a quality voice needs to be made 'better', taking out the nuances, the natural little lows and flows, or whatever of a perfect voice. I don't mind remastering if gives a tad more bass, or takes out extraneous noise, but to change a perfect voice because it doesn't appeal to some teenage computer operator sitting at a desk somewhere makes me fume. Would you be talking about Fil from Wings Of Pegasus? He highlights the lies of the music industry of today using that type of software 🤦🏼♀️.
Hi from Australia, Mike John's first song was called " Sadie" the cleaning lady and after that he had a really a hard time getting any more recordings for many years never really made it big until many years later but he kept fighting until he broken everyone down now he will go down in Australian history as one of our best " The Voice".🦘🇦🇺 PS along with my personal favourite Jimmy Barnes.
He had numerous stages in his career. This early stage with all of his hits, and there were plenty. TV Johnny Farnham with variety type shows and a sit com. Attempting to re-launch his recording career around late 70s. I remember being at Uni and reading a concert review in a University (Student Union?) paper of a gig he played I think at either Sydney Uni or Uni of NSW. Given that he wouldn’t have been the “flavour” of the times back then, it struck me as an interesting review. Of course, the LRB gig followed, then the huge solo career. It seems that people outside of Australia are only discovering him now that his singing days are behind him.
