  • After high water took out road and bridges we've been confined to an area around our home on a stretch of the Coquihalla Highway. We decided to document the highway condition and repairs along with a bit of our own experience. This video looks at two old gas pipelines uncovered in the Coquhalla river during the latest high water event. Jer, Matt and Sarah join us to have a farewell meal with Mike and Ute who have been stranded with us on this section of highway.

Almost sad to see Mike and Ute go but glad to see they're finally able to, some great people making this best of this hardship and doing what they could to help even picking up trash along the chain up area and helping the construction effort. the old pipes will catch rocks and logs and slow the water down going over the deeper active pipeline slowing erosion. theres a train bridge near me that uses the same strategy they pushed the old bridge over just down stream of the new bridge and it created a pool that slows the water down massively

Those cables running on the pipes are most likely corrosion cables I’ve got two crossing of my property here in Ontario and they come in once a year and check for corrosion. I would say you’ve got two new friends you’ve made and that’s what makes us Canadians🇨🇦🍺

If there was power connected to them at some point, then they might have been cathodic protection. They might have buried locating wire above the pipeline, or there might be communication cable along there as well.

How wonderful. If only the rest of the world could conduct themselves like this. Make the best of a good situation. Now a days, everyone just barks out their "sounds good" ideals and points their fingers instead of seeing how good they really have. People are so messed up. I can't stand the world. I don't even want to go out into public anymore. It's not the planet itself, it's these terrible, ungrateful, selfish, self centered, idealistic know it all people who think they have an answer for it all. They have these grand ideas of how the world should work but not a one of them will live by the words they speak. They demand this and that then go and do the exact opposite of what they're telling everyone else they should be doing. Thanks for taking us along. These are real people. Instead of crying about everything, they simply make the best of the cards they're dealt. Those are strong, strong people.

Ok, got it. Pipelines were installed in a way that minimized costs, even across rivers. That's appropriate, if the actuaries who engineers consulted with at the time to assess future risk, determined... at the time... financial risk was minimal. Problem? Future risk assessment did not consider this recent type of event. I think we need to implement in law, hardening pipeline transit in areas of great risk and also, future planning/concern protocol. The cost is minimal if done at the time of pipeline construction.
