This is a condensed example of how a promotion board transpires. A mock board was conducted right before this was recorded. Instead of posting a 20 minute mock board. We recorded this somewhat scripted example to get the point across.
This outline applies to Soldier of the Month boards as well. Most (not all) boards will follow this sequence.

This is JUST an example.
The Sergeants and Sergeants Major (President of the Board) would ask a lot more pertinent questions and other things as well, such as reciting the NCO Creed. This is just a very small glimpse into an Army Promotion Board.
Sometimes but not all the time. Some only get asked 2 questions, some pass before they even walk in, and some get grilled.

The US Army i was in during the 19 60's promoted far more different than currently.
1. A time in grade based on the grade required for that mos.
2. The imediate commanding chain approves the promotion.
3. The intended future plans when the canditates enlistment date is due.
Well, the US Army of 2018 still has time in service and time in grade requirements. Only after meeting those will your immediate chain of command (platoon level) allow you to even try for the board. Then you have to pass the board. Depending on where you are, and how your unit likes you (if you're MOS proficient or a people pleaser), will determine if its easy or hard. Then, you have to make points: from PT test, weapons qual, schools, online training, etc. THEN you have to attend the BLC which is a month long introduction to managing a team. You can accomplish one, or multiple of those steps, but you have to get them all in order to promote to E5. All in all, there's alot more "red tape" now, but it's not difficult
Mine lasted about 2 minutes, if that. I was a prior SGT 2 years TIG with the 82nd. Got cought in that under 90 day rule after 1st Gulf war. Had to get out. Came back in 1 year later BUT HAD to take a reduction to SPC. I walked in said a bit about myself and CSM looked over records and had no questions Anyone have anything to add? The BN NBC NCO filling in for a 1SG asked an off the wall question to try to embarass me I guess bout the IM 93 or something. I really don't remember now but back then, coming from Saudi and all that masking, 256 kits, M8s... I shot back explaining the DT236 PDR75. The unit didn't have those yet so deer in the headlight look. CSM said " anyone else want to embarrass themselves? Ask now or hold you peace." I remember hearing my 1SG leaning over to that Chem guy and say "If the CSM has no questions that is our sign to ask no questions"
NBC guy here ,(now it's called CBRN). Nowadays we don't use the DT236 or PDR75 anymore, it got replaced with the VDR-2. In fact I just started paperwork to turn in the PDR75 my unit still had for some odd reason. We still use M256 kits but we're on the M256A2 now. And we still use M8 paper.

My old squad leader told me a story:
He was an e-4 going for his five and he went to the board, but there was an e-5 in his platoon that was also going to the board as well. My future squad leader did the board and did well. He stepped out of the board and the e-5 went in after him. My squad leader than heard SGM yell "GET THE FUCK OUT!!!" A few seconds after the door closed. The e-5 steps out and my squad leader asked what had happened. The e-5 looked at him, shrugged and said "well, apparently you're not supposed to do the Hitler salute." They were both stationed in Germany at the time.

they asked my dad some weird question that he had no damn clue what the answer was and he just said 7 random things with a bunch of confidence and later they said that’s all they were looking for. confidence and sticking to your answer

At an E-6 grilling a soldier was asked about EVERYTHING Infantry He got all the questions right. The next man walked in and he heard them start to ask him medical questions. The soldier said he was not a medic. Somehow they got my records mixed up with his. Made 6 later that month. Thank God I was a medic with an infantry unit..

Also in boards like this they aren’t always necessarily looking for the right answer. They are looking for your confidence as a leader. If you hesitate with you answers you will always sound unsure. Trust in your own abilities

Yes, he could be the "acting" SGM/CSM of that board or battalion -- in which case, he must respectfully refer to him as his acting role.

Promotion board is supposed to have your battalion sergeant major present. You won’t be wrong if you still refer to the president of the board as sergeant major.
This was a rundown of the mock board. The real board is typically a CSM and you’re asked questions by 4 1SGs
In Korea they decided to fuck with a SPC and set the chair on it's side (to see if he would pick it up and then give him shit for doing something he wasn't told to) this guy managed to sit at the (somewhat) position of attention on a sideways chair. All the NCOs were laughing too hard to get the questions out and passed him.
I did many soldier and promotion boards. The hardest one I did was a all day event for soldier of the year for division. It involved the day starting with a PT test, a written test, an oral board, a land navigation test and multiple weapons disassembly and assembly timed.
Oral board wtf. I did not know you had to perform that literally.

This is a mock board or "Example" the reason he answered it wrong is to give an Example of what to say when you do not know the answer to a question. A real board would have been way longer.

Say the creed with pride as well as the unit motto at the end. You don't have to repeat the question. Many do to get some time to figure out the answer.

It was nice to be Asian in the military when i was in. Rank was just thrown at me because of affirmative action, although it hurt my relations with my peers greatly, as i was a total shitbag undeserving of the many promotions given to me.

The 3 Norths on a military map are:
Magnetic North
Grid North
True North

the board was one of the stupidest easiest things and it was nothing easy like this all they did was fuck with me turn my chair upside down thinking I wouldn't notice, I said two lines of the soldier's Creed, Creed of the noncommissioned officer, our ada March (patriot air defense unit Alma matter) and the army song and my bio, asked me a bunch of simple questions then some bullshit ones (like why do you wear your rank on your ach and uniform at the same time) I told them "because that's the standard sergeant major" oh and do NOT do NOT get ranks mixed up (ie call the sergeant major first sergeant) lol don't stay up to midnight studying that stupid guide like I did. know your ar 670-1, customs courtesies, brm, field sanitation and basic army knowledge and of course watch your bearing learn d&c and you'll be alright.

Did a board in 04 in full battle rattle with mask. Csm had us don our masks. Had it on till the last candidate went through and we got the all clear. That was a crazy board. I had just got back from the initial invasion of Iraq. Everyone passed. Great times.

When I went to the E5, E6, and Squadron Soldier of the Month boards, I wore a Class A uniform, and was inspected head to toe for proper fit of the uniform, and placement of medals on my jacket. For current events, you mean to tell me "Who won the Daytona 500" is really a good question? What happens if that soldier doesn't follow sports or NASCAR? I was asked about current world events, not sports events. There were more than three board members each time I went to a board.
This was intended to be an example for soldiers who have never been to the board. You are right, the board would be in Class A's, the current events will be more world related, and the board should consist of 1SGs and the CSM. Thanks for the input, I am sure there were many people thinking the same thing.
Class A Uniforms are not mandatory in theater when you go to the board. Also, this could've been a mock board for teaching purpose

The answer is true north, grid north and magnetic north. True north is determined by direction, grid north is north from a SPECIFIC point on a map and magnetic north is determined by use of a compass.

You're not wrong. Especially in the Army, and especially now, the E5 board is mostly a formality. If your sponsor sells you hard enough, and you dont overly embarrass yourself in the board, they'll pass you.

Joe Wigfall no, he is a master sergeant in the "position" of a sergeant major. Therefore you call him sergeant major. Same as a sfc in the position as a first sergeant. But he still holds the rank of master sergeant so he introduces himself as such.

Damn, when I went to the board, I was grilled on weapons, land nav, first aid, current events, D&C, unit history and division history. I also had to recite the NCO creed WITH in a "Loud and Thunderous" manner. How things have changed.

Just a dog and pony show pretty much, I think we do things much better in the Air Force for E-5 through E-7, you take a test based on your AFSC and Air Force history/customs and courtesies, you get points for that, the medals you've earned and your performance reports.

+Matthew Dex Everything affects your performance at the board however, as long as you are confident, it shouldn't affect you.
For example, if they ask you something you don't know the answer to, you can say, "(address the Soldier asking the question) SGM, I do not know at this time."
If you say that with confidence, you'll be fine. Say everything as a statement, not a question. If they ask you what color the sky is and you say purple but you say it as if you believe it, don't worry about it.

Maybe Army regs are different now. Enlisted men don't salute other EM's, only commissioned officers. Did I hear the Sp 4 address the board members as sir?
All personnel, enlisted or officer, shall salute due to the following: When reporting to the president of a board. When reporting to an officer. When reporting on sentry duty. When turning formations over. When reporting to a pay officer.
