I got Soldier of the Month for Company because there was only two of us competing and the other guy was a complete idiot. I also got smoked for doing so poorly. I was by no means a gung ho soldier, but I felt embarrassed for looking so bad. Oh yeah, if you win which I technically did, then you have to do it all over again at the Battalion level. I didn't want to embarrass myself again, so I prepared for that board and ended up winning it. Then I got 2nd at Brigade. I hated doing it at the time, but it actually taught me how to prepare for job interviews after I got out of the Army.
@Brian Casteel I mean it typically happens. NCO's are people too and contradict the creed all the time. I've seen it all. There are some outstanding NCO's that go above and beyond and make sure you're squared away. Nobody will help you on the board like a well seasoned E-4 tho. For the most part we got ourselves right with study guides and group mock boards. There are just some shitty sergeants out there.

Just did my first board today, my company’s SOM boards are no joke, they pull out a fog machine, strobe light, speaker, pro mask, m4A1, M17, first aid mannequin, and a whole lot of other shit. And legit it’s like a red phase of basic training for 30 minutes😂

I got in the habit of studying an hour every other day in my free time as well. When the board finally came around I had nothing to worry about as I already had most of the study guide memorized. This also helped out once I became an NCO bc I usually knew what the right things to do were based off the regs.
E-4 mafia days: These boards were always done Saturday afternoons. I would intentionally bomb the SoM board every time because I was forced to do it. I would rehearse the board with my Company CO and 1sg the week prior to show them I knew everything there was to know. Went in as a soup sandwich so I can get out of my uniform and get off post. Until my CO told me I wouldn’t go to the E-5 promotion board unless I quit screwing around and get the SoM. Went in and won it. My CO gave my bluefalcon squadleader/NCO an Army Achievement Medal for “his hard work and dedication to train his soldier to go above army standards…” Typical.

I have been to a soldier of the month board. I put the seat up to sit on it, and got kicked out. The rule is you are not supposed to put up chair to sit on it. Leave it how it is and sit.
Why would you ask? You were given permission to sit. To sit, the chair must be in the correct position. If a soldier can't follow orders without every step spelled out, they are a piss poor soldier.
My 19yr old left Nov 3rd this yr for the Army. I imagine the last PVT being him. I pray, please Lord, that my child would/will have sense enough to pick the darn chair up! Could not stop laughing! This was great!

I went in for Airman of the Month (USAF) the questioning at first was USAF and job related, then they started asking me about sports. Like "Do you like football?" and I'd say something like "Sure, I watch football sometimes." The they'd go off on questions like "Who holds the NFL record for yards rushing in one game" and stuff like that. "Ummm...I don't really follow it that close." Then he'd say, "Well, you really don't know anything about sports, that's all for today." The next time I went in they asked me the same questions, this time I said, "Yes I like sports, I really like European bicycle racing". They'd look at each other then go, "Well...ummmm...that's all for today Airman Wootie". The next time they told me I was up for Airman of the Month again, I said "Naw...pick someone who knows about football." I never got asked to go again.
Now i am a Marine, we get promotion panels likes this from Private First Class to Sergeant. Past that it’s completely different. It’s still not just so easy to try and memorize absolutely every little detail about the Marine Corps to the point that every question gets answered to the upmost extent. I swear though, if any of my time during my promotion panels I EVER walked in and i saw the chair i was supposed to sit in was placed on its side like this, id just walk right back out.😂
Thankfully i didn't have to go to the board just straight to BLC. Then BLC only lasted 1 week because COVID had just hit fort Stewart so we all graduated super early
