They aren't the strongest in the game (I was getting a lot of 20.5% phys attack up, with +3% stamina as the downside) but they are very good considering you don't have to beat a cursed dungeon boss to get them. They also fit any slot, so they are useful to have a bunch of so you can get all of your weapons at a decent strength before doing serious chalice diving.
Important question: do you remember what blood gem you had on that gave you the red icon with an arrow next to your item slot? What effect does the red icon indicate?
This should work in NG with modifications depending on level and gear. You can chug a sedative inbetween each Winter Lantern to avoid the frenzy, and if you time it right you can avoid taking any damage from frenzy by having the frenzy pop while you're visceral attacking. The echoes farmed during this cycle should pay for the sedatives you need.
