- In the Italian town where St. Benedict was born, Benedictine monks led by Father Cassian Folsom, an American, gather nine times daily to worship God with Gregorian chants and prayer. Their singing has been recorded and is now a chart-topping album, allowing others outside the walls of the monastery to experience the music and devotions of monastic life.

This is a nice metaphor but of course they’re not templars. They aren’t fighting the devil’s servants like the templars did, they are fighting the devil directly. This is the lesson of St Benedict.
I had the amazing grace for a "respite" at the cartusians and the cistercians- for a week each. I joined in with their prayers. It was heaven. Pure and simple. Makes sense to get up at 23.30 and go to the church to spend 3 hours singing prayers with the cartusians.
I will pray for this monk. I worked in oncology. I will definitley pray for him.

This is simply beautiful. I went to the Benedictines at both Buckfast Abbey and Ampleforth Abbey (Devon and Yorkshire, respectively, in the UK). I joined the English Benedictine Congregation at the Ampleforth Community as a postulant but discerned that Dominican spirituality and life were more for me. I have extremely fond memories of my contact with the monks from both communities and my love for Gregorian Chant and a contemplative approach to personal prayer, community prayer and the Sacred Liturgy of our Church. Prior to the devastating earthquake, I attended mass in Norcia and thanks to the monks, I felt so close to God. I pray for Norcia, her resurgence, the rebuilding of the church, and the monks. God bless you all. Thank you for giving me beautiful memories, including beer and your CD.
Listening to Gregorian chants from those truly dedicated to God as the monks and nuns are places a certain peacefulness within that cannot be found elsewhere irregardless of the singer.

Go visit a monastery on a vocational retreat, my friend...if it appeals to you, talk with them further! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Personally, I'd love to visit an Easter Orthodox one and really compare notes with them..and possibly some others that are of differing faiths who practice some form of monastics. I've recently heard of some that include Lutherans, Methodist and even Presbyterian nuns and monks

There are various contemplative monasteries throughout the US with various contemplative ministries. We have a Trappist (or Cistercians) monastery in Conyers, GA who has a variety of duties within the monastery, following the Rule of St Benedict and its motto, 'Ora et Labora' ('Pray and Work'). These range from making stained glass to gardening, farming, etc.; other Trappist monasteries do other tasks including making baked goods, customized caskets (which are cheaper as compared to getting them from a funeral home, in my opinion); dairy products like cheeses, jellies and jams; other Orders also conduct retreats, make liqueurs and cordials, beers, wines, etc. Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk who was granted permission by his superiors to go outside the monastery conducting lectures on spirituality, promoting world peace and inter-religious dialogue, social justice issues, etc.

Nothing and I mean nothing even comes close to hearing the monks singing.
Nobody could ever do it better or like they do!!
One of my love's is to hear the monks singing and if you wish to hear angels sing listen to the nuns. Nothing can change how either one sings it's totally unique and I'd not listen to others trying to imitate the monks or the nuns singing.

Indeed they do...I spent some time on a vocational retreat with the Benedictine Sisters (founded by St Benedict's twin sister St Scholastica) in Cullman, Alabama. It's an active community in which the sisters have outside duties as teachers, nurses, social workers, etc.
Some of the more contemplative nuns (those that are dedicated to interior prayer and work within the confines of the cloister) have convents all over the US and the world. One of Elvis Presley's former girlfriends and actress, Delores Hart, is a Benedictine nun.
In the musical/film 'Sound of Music' Maria is a postulant (one of the first steps one takes in becoming a nun) of the Benedictine Abbey at Nonnberg. It's also known as a period of discernment by simply asking God what does God want me to do in life in terms of a vocation...be it a priest? monk? sister? married life? minister? This period can last about a year or so. It also lets the postulant know what the community does in terms of their daily routine, monastic rule, spirituality, etc. either individually or as a whole. Some religious orders call such people as 'aspirants'.
Once one has passed that period and wish to become part of the community go through a second process called the novitiate in which they receive their habit and learn more about their order, religious history, Scripture, the rule of their order. When St Benedict wrote his rule for his monks over 1500 years ago, the first words were, "Listen with the ears of your heart the words of the Lord as they are spoken to you...." The novitiate can last (depending on the order or at the discretion of either the novice mistress and/or the abbess) from 2 years or even several. In the Eastern Orthodox tradition, it can take several years for a novice to be accepted into the community and take her first temporary vows of poverty, chastity, obedience and stability or loyalty to the order and receive tonsuring prior to receiving the veil. It's also a time when the novice either uses their former name or another name as a religious. Some orders might give the name the novice used when they were baptized or confirmed and call them by that name or if they so choose after a favorite saint. They're also issued a silver ring to wear as a token of their commitment and usually wear a white veil and/or habit. It also reminds them of the fact they can leave or quit the order if they so desire.
The final stage is when final vows are made before their superior and the bishop who pronounces their vows and the nun or monk appears before their superior pronouncing their vows as a commitment to Christ, Our Lady, the superiors of the order of which they belong to by the vows poverty, chastity and obedience and those appointed to them until death. When a sister takes her vows, she's often clad in a wedding gown as a Bride of Christ and led inside the chapel by the abbess while the choir sings, 'Come, my beloved, forget your family and leave your father's house, for the King of Glory has desired your beauty!'
As a bride, she's asked if she's fully resolved and resigned herself by joining the Order of her own free will and says yes. Her hair is cut and her bridal gown is removed (in another room) and replaced with the religious habit of her Order and veil of a professed nun (often adorned with flowers), along with receiving a golden wedding band in place of the silver one she wore as a novice. She's now introduced to those present as a member of their community family with a new name and life as a Bride and Servant of Christ!

This reporter is not understanding the gift of suffering. Nothing passes by the throne of God without His approval of it for us. He gives suffering to us as a gift for our sanctification. Through suffering comes holiness, as we are meant to live and contemplate our ultimate end, which is to worship God and return to Him, who created all things.
Maybe Monk-hood would be better than Priesthood.

They do have Benedictine Sisters that might let you visit them on a retreat or something and if you're interested in their way of life, go on a vocational retreat...it will give you some idea what they're livelihood is like. Various religious orders do allow this

My prayers and thoughts go out to you on your quest. When i was young, I had thoughts of becoming a sister myself and if I did receive the call, I'd probably be out in the world as opposed to being inside the cloister. I visited both types of orders...both the Visitation Sisters in Snellville, GA (they're a contemplative order (although other nuns from that order work in the world as teachers and even social workers elsewhere) and the more active Benedictine Sisters in Cullman, AL, have members that are teachers, nurses, college professors, social workers/case managers, therapists, etc. throughout the Southeastern US. One of these sisters was my younger sister's religion teacher in Catholic school years ago. Also, the sisters were allowed the option of either wearing their habit or street-clothes but sometimes wore the badge of the Jubilee Medal of St Benedict to determine their identity as sisters on their clothing.
The motto of the Visitation Sisters is 'Live, Jesus!' They have their roots from the town of Annecy, France, founded by a middle-aged widow and mother of 4 children named St Jane (Jeanne) Frances de Chantal and her spiritual advisor and dear friend, St Francis de Sales, who was archbishop of Geneva during the height of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation years. Because Jane couldn't enter a convent due to her previous marital status, Archbishop Francis suggested, "Why don't you establish an order of like-minded women such as yourself?" The idea was a novelty, especially since she knew some women who wished to join other orders but were turned down due to health reasons or previously married, divorced, etc. Both Jane and Francis decided to call it the Sisters of the Visitation of Holy Mary and like their patron who displayed charity towards her elderly cousin Elizabeth, they too would also exercise the self-same love for God and their neighbor as well. The first few hours of the day are done in silence, save for morning prayers and Mass, and after another brief period of prayer and praise before dispersing for daily chores, we'd greet one another with the words, "God be praised! Good Morning, Sister!" ;-)
The Benedictines, next to that of the Augustinians, are by far one of the oldest religious orders in the Catholic church, started by St Benedict and his twin sister Scholastica started the Benedictine Sisters and adopted the same rule that her brother used. When reading the Rule, the first words that appear are, "Listen, my child, be attentive to the voice of your heart...." Their motto is 'Ora et Labora'...'Pray and Work'. If you look at the medal of St. Benedict and its inscriptions. The front part shows St Benedict with a broken chalice and a raven. According to legend, a disgruntled monk threatened to poison Benedict with a poison cup of wine. As was his custom, Benedict made the Sign of the Cross before partaking of it and the cup broke into pieces! Another monk threatened to poison Benedict with a loaf of bread and before he could take a bite, a raven flew in and took the poisoned bread and flew away with Benedict telling the bird see to it that it won't harm anyone. Luckily the bird returned from his errand and Benedict awarded the bird with another loaf to nosh on. He's often invoked against poisoning. On the outer inscription it reads, in small print, 'Peace!' and the surrounding inscription reads, "May we be assisted by his presence (Benedict) at the hour of our death!" Like St Joseph, Benedict is patron of the dying and a happy death. It was said his sister Scholastica and her brother would meet at a small house between his monastery and her convent once a year to catch up on old news, seeking advice. But one year, Benedict noticed his sister wasn't her old self and she begged him to stay with her a little while longer so they could talk. He told her he had to return to his monastery and she then began to pray. Just as he was about to head out the door, a terrible storm rose. He rebuked her saying, "May God forgive you, Sister, what did you do?" She told him, "I didn't want you to leave and so i asked God to intervene. But if you need to go back to you monastery, go! But if you can't, surely you can tell me about the joys of Heaven until morning!" After the storm left, they returned to their respectable homes. A few weeks later, as Benedict was looking from his cell window in direction of his sister's convent, he saw a white dove make its way into Heaven! Shortly thereafter, his monks told him of his sister's death. Instead of grieving her loss, he invited the nuns and monks in the chapel to sing hymns of praise to God and have her buried in the tomb which he had made for the two of them...and has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries!
When he died several years later, it was said his monks heard him say, "It's time for me to go home, brothers!" He was praying with his fellow monks in the chapel after receiving communion and his monks held his arms in prayer.
On the back of the medal, you will see a cross with the letters CSSB which means, 'the Cross of Saint Benedict' and the letters on the cross are the following prayer, 'May the Holy and Life-giving Cross be my Light...May the Dragon never be my guide!' The outer inscription is a prayer of exorcism, 'Begone, Satan! Tempt me not with your vanities! What you are offering is evil! Drink your own poison!'
One of the largest religious orders of active nuns in the world is one called the Sisters of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary in mainland China (over 50,000 strong). They were established by a French missionary in the mid 1800s who encouraged female converts to the Catholic faith who had a calling to be nuns to join an order they adopted as their own. Many of them had to go into hiding during the Cultural Revolution while some of them wound up imprisoned, tortured or killed if they continued their ministry. But after the death of Mao Tse Tung and the Cultural Revolution, they were released and continued to thrive in spite of being told to sever their ties to Rome and the West, among other things. Many of them hold all kinds of odd jobs besides being teachers, nurses, doctors, financial advisors, business owners, farmers, engineers, helping at risk kids, etc. Even though their activities are monitored by the government, they have some leeway in continuing their ministry as nuns and even allowed them to engage in humanitarian aid such as aiding victims of fires, earthquakes and floods while allowing them to have the option of wearing their religious habit or street-clothes.

I contacted them, since then I've been going to their vespers every Thursday after class. I'm also going to their vocation retreat in January. Once again thank you. ☺☺☺

Not that I have one to give but it would be nice if there were such an order.
I volunteered for the Franciscans and I know they are much into ecology.... :) Francis of Assisi was a poor contemplative very close to nature.
