This was informative. I'm Jewish, but I totally feel I understand where Br. Raban is coming from. And I dare say -- the richness of his life looks enviable!

Just out of curiosity, did you happen to visit a certain Cowie Wine Cellars while there? That's my grandfather's winery, and right next to it is a beautiful family chapel. He's a retired deacon, and Knight Commander in the Equestrian Order.
If not, consider dropping in for a quick moment, if only for the chapel. That, and the bells - he's got a huge collection of really grand old church bells.

    5 yr update
I commented 5 yrs ago (you can scroll and find my handle) was surprised when my comment was up on my feed as being commented on 5 yrs later. I guess God’s work is continuing.
I’m still alone, trying my best to live monasticly. God’s interference is daily, taking me out of my beloved prayer life and immersing me into His Work and Will. Not always comfortable but noticeably needed, in two ways. The good of others and personal growth for myself. I have a saying “oh boy another growth opportunity”. Nonetheless, I’m still here, trying daily to catch a glimpse or hear the word of Jesus.
When it comes it’s least expected, but truly precious. Worthy of all my efforts.
Listen today with the ear of your heart, for Jesus only can be heard when we are silent.
    Pax vobis.

Jude...Many of the 40 or so there now are from other communities that have closed their doors for lack of new members to keep things going....they have transferred their "Stability" to Subiaco.....Fortunately Subiaco will continue rather well because of it's famous and highly qualified boys school....but more and more jobs/duties (teachers-male/female) are now civilian paid positions due to lack of number and qualified monks....

Having never lived in a monastery I am sat marginalised within the confines of a local community on the western edge of a city. I pray every day and have become of use as more of a link to what is good for they that don’t seem to realise they don’t try hard enough to be of good. I am of course a sinner and reminded of this very thoroughly by the surroundings I am kept in. It helps to maintain our need for forgiveness in the light of Christ’s teachings, but tends to redirect our objective destination at the cheapened price of vanity and greediness. Such repetitiveness in city society certainly musters a hope for change, if it didn’t I suppose I wouldn’t be praying so much.
Thank you for your prayers for they who have not yet seen their importance.
    Kind regards
    LM

indeed we come to faith by learning about God - "faith cometh through hearing, and hearing the Word of God".
however, the difference is that we are justified and redeemed not by our own knowledge/understanding, but by faith in Christ - the only one capable of sanctifying us, and saving us from death.

I appreciate your comments, but we need not open a debate when our brother Nalanda wrote such beautiful comments about Br. Raban. One sentence quotes are not a good way to start a dialogue with someone. We can all learn from one another and grow in our spiritual lives and we can share our faith with one another whether Catholic or not. Our own St. John Paul the Great was friends with the Dalai Lama, so I suggest you strike up a friendship on some other platform and get to know one another if you wish to continue your discussion.

I stood eight dusk untill dawn vigils
Under the guidance of a priest,
Silent contemplative , once a month.
The spirituality of the monastic culture , the patriarchy of all monks
Saint and Anthony of the desert his
Story so fascinated me I would have ran off to the theban desert , if it was
Possible , but I was two thousand years late.
However the same principal are still there , a monks life is work and prayer, lived by a rule of life.
Study is also a part of this way of life, but the idea it to leave the world
I have always been drawn to the. Brothers of silence ,
    Contemplative prayer , this vigils
Were silent held by ancient standards.
At dusk enter the chapel , light the candles ( only three , two at the
Communion rail , one by the door )
Say vespers , prayer the full Rosary
Then the rest of the night is spent in silent prayer , come morning when the stained glass windows start lighting up you say matins , blow out the candles.

After searching for a few years, in various religious and spiritual traditions, I found the New Message - it speaks to my soul like nothing else and I feel like I can truly say with conviction that I am a Student of the New Message, that this teaching is part of my journey in life. The New Message calls me to find my deeper connection to God and to take this Presence into the world, that God can work through me and I can contribute the gifts that are in my heart to give.

@@jrzzrj The Catholic Church was established by Jesus Christ when he said to Simon, you are Peter the rock on which I will build my church. And then gave him the keys to the kingdom. They are symbols of authority. When did your born-again denomination start and who started it? You will find that it is only one of many thousands that started the same way and they all started from the same protestant movement beginning with Luther when he no longer wanted to be part of the fold.
The Catholic Church is the one true and apostolic Church. It has the fullness of the faith. There is not one thing that it teaches that is not biblical, since it put the bible together in the first place. Perhaps you were poorly catechised. With the thousands of denominations in the world, all "born-again", which only means baptism anyway, how can you be sure your's is correct teaching as opposed to the others that all teach something different? Is it just personal preference that your denomination fits in nicely with your own personal beliefs. People like that generally church-hop because they keep uncovering beliefs that they personally disagree with then move onto another for a time and then continue to do so until they no longer believe at all.
I have also done much study and research and concluded that the Catholic Church is the one true Church.

The happiness of heaven is seen in the tranquil soul and not in the loud laughter and desirous spirit of the world.
If one is for God one must forsake the world's ways.
For the world's ways will eventually bring sorrow to the soul.
For world loves itself at the cost of loving God.
