Ink Transitions using only standard effects | After Effects Tutorial

- In this After Effects Tutorial I’ll show you how to create realistic Ink transitions using ONLY standard effects!

Of course you could use footage of ink drops, the thing about footage is, you can’t really control a lot.
So we create everything in after effects.
In the first step we add a new solid, add a mask and form some kind of splash shape.
Next, we animate the mask expansion.
After that we need to work on the look and make it look more like ink.
We use the turbulent noise effect to create textures for the edges and the shape itself.
Then we use a displacement map and the layer style settings to make it look much more like real ink.
Finally we use one of the solids, to reveal some footage.
I use music from Artlist: artlist.io

Scaling up the mask in the beginning doesn't create a keyframe for the mask shape component? :(

Edit: I'm a huge dummy! I either selected the solid or the "masks" Group thingy, not ONLY the mask!!!! now it works! :D
I'm still kind of a noob in After Effects (mainly use Photoshop and Illustrator and 3D software) but tutorials like yours have been extremely helpful ^.^
Awesome! That's great to hear! Yeah that happens to me as well. I select the solid instead of the mask and move everything:) Command+Z is the best shortcut ever :-)

Hello!
The subtitles of the lesson contain an automatic translation from German. I speak Bulgarian and Russian.
When I try to turn on the translation, no caption appears with a translation, it says only "music".
Hi Valentina. I just changed the video settings. You can now click the "settings" button in the video then go to "Subtutles/CC" and then to "Auto Translate" to choose the language you want.
I am working on changing the settings to all my videos. It might take a few days;-)
4:03 Where you move those little masks out of canvas...if I do exactly what you do ALL the masks move, I cannot select an individual mask. Also, at 3:34, there is no more Luma there, I guess AE was updated. Any tips?
If all the masks move you have selected the solid instead of one mask. You need to select one of the mask properties to move it.
The track matte system has changed in AE 23. now you link layers to your mask layer with the track matte pick whip. Click on the left box to turn it from an alpha into a luma matte.
I cannot get the noise edges comp to show up in the drop down menu for the displacement layer. What did I do wrong?
That's weird. It should definitely be there. I can't think of a reason why it shouldn't... Maybe restart After Effects?
I have a problem on 3:32. In my project I see no Luma Matte "[noise_texture]". I Have only choices between Noise Edges, Noise Texture and Ink. What can I do?
Which version of After Effects are you using? In AE 23, the track matte system changed.

You mean the “apple” key? It’s the command key. For PCs it’s the control key instead
Why is the entire ink effect slightly transparent when I put it on top of a video?
Do you want to use it as a mask? It might be because it is not completely white and black. Anything besides white and black will be transparent. And Ink in general is a slightly transparent liquid.
May I can know which photoshop did you used for this animation ?

It's one of my older tutorials... I would do the audio very differently looking back.
My gosh… I think I’d rather pay somebody just to make this for me. Or better yet, I can actually drop ink onto a white sheet of paper and video it.… In 8K. The end result here just doesn’t look like real ink to me. Oh well.
It depends on what you’re looking for… You can’t tell ink in water how to move.
Can you be a bit slower while teaching? its too fast
I think my newer tutorials are slower.
This is useless at best. 8 minute video that become 40 minutes just to going back and forth to get what you are doing.
