I believe he told my brother that he felt the "what is the best amp" question was a complex one. He may have mentioned others but he said he really did love the Lonestar. I think he is being genuine when raving about Mesa Boogie in general and the Lonestar in particular.
This guy is so ARTICULATE in his demo, never stuttering or searching for words. SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HIS SH*T AND ISN'T AFRAID TO SHARE HIS KNOWLEDGE! Appreciate this young players, years ago guys were MUCH more secretive about their tonal workings. Thanks Andy, fantastic tone/chops.
I have a cool story for everyone. When I ordered Andy's Official Bootleg DVD about 3 years ago, there was a problem with the copy I received. I emailed his site to resolve the issue and got a phone call FROM HIM. He left his cell # on my voicemail so I could call him about it. Months later, while I was searching for a new amp, my brother called him to get his opinion. Andy remembered us & was very gracious. My brother spoke to him a couple of times about the Lonestar.
eventually get the things I need to post a video that will hopefully translate well. For those who are wondering if you can reproduce this sound with the Lonestar, my answer is yes. You just need to take some time to dial it in. A good delay (analog preferably) is also a must. It really fills out the sound and is necessary to nail Andy's tone. Thank you Andy for being a great player and a great person.
As far as i know, he put back the JB in his AT100 i read it at the AT forum and in an interview too as far as i remember. It was his all time favourite, the Dimarzio AT1 is also based on the JB, at the end of the Cry for you live video, you can see the logo if you look careful. In the AT300 he has the AT1 which is very very close to the Breed. But we can never have his fingers unfortunately, which counts the most:)
i just said it was based on the JB because it was (and probably is) his favorite pickup and he said it came out even better and as you say it sounds like a breed almost
My favorite guitarist on the planet. The perfect storm of tone, technique, taste and phrasing, dude's just a straight MONSTER player! He's also one of the nicest, most ego-less cats you'll ever meet.
woow you lucky guy ;) I bet he is a very nice guy and hmble. I wish i could meet him and play with him. He is one of the best guitarist I've ever heard.
Hey man, seems like you have the same taste in gear as me. I'm continuing to make small tweaks to the lonestar, and I'm finally getting my tone to where I want it. I also moved the amp from my room into a jam space, and man it sounds so much better in a large room. Its starting to sparkle the more I treak it.
@1dangus1. The answer to your question is tough. When I was making that choice, I went to a shop to try out all the current mesas (except the ED and mark v which weren't out yet). I was thinking going in that I would like the stiletto most, closely followed by the lonestar classic. After trying all the mesas out, I was in love with the lonestar special! I didn't like the stiletto at all actually (it's very brightly voiced). The lss was right in the middle of the lsc and stiletto for me.
I have to interject that Andy's getting that tone with less than 100W coming out of that amp too. That was the big gripe I've had about my Marshalls. They never offered half-power settings on their amps. Much is the pity. I'm a Stiletto fan now big time.
I eventually bought a 2x12 combo. I even searched for a used Memory Man echo & found one around the corner from me. I also bought his signature BB preamp. I've been able to reproduce the sound on this video & the video on the Mesa site almost exactly. I've even learned the Lonestar part of this note for note. For fun, I was thinking of posting a mock video of it, words & all, to demonstrate how similar it sounds. I don't yet have a mic etc & am not sure it would translate well to video. I will
Also, I should point out that the lonestar amps all have identical preamps. The same goes for stilleto series. The differences are in the power sections. Based on my financial and volume/power needs (or constraints), the lss was great for me. If you find yourself liking the lsc but are looking for a more British flavor, you can run that amp with el34s or you can get an LSS (which, though less common, comes in a 212, 410, and head configuration).
hum canceling singlecoils ;) cruisers to be exact - look'em up on the dimarzio homepage. they use dual blades, which are not wound individually, which makes it one single coil, that produces the sound
I tried it last week and while I thought it sounded good, it wasn't the sort of amp I could make a tonal home in. My dirty and clean sounds tend to involve very different settings (even on the LS) so I was able to get a really nice clean, but when I flipped over to the distortion, I had to retweak. Once I did that, I'd lost the clean I wanted. I think my issues have to do with single channel amps as a whole though. Tone wise, I think the LSS and the 112 ED are very comparable.
@wfranklin i'm funny about that kind of stuff too, i remember going to sam ash the other day to try out a marshall haze, but when i saw that the clean and overdrive channell shared the same eq, i didn't even bother, my settings are pretty much completely opposite switching from clean to dirty
hey man, thanks for uploading this. Wondering if you can help me. I recently bought a lonestar classic 2x12 combo, and I love it, but it is lacking slightly in the shimmer department. I know I have to spend more time dialing it in to get Andy's tone, but I was wondering if you thought i might like the lss better? thanks!!!
He used Rectos briefly back in the 90s, but I don't think he's as big on the Recto kinda tone. I own a RKII though, and can't recommend that sucker enough!
he has a Duncan JB at the bridge and 2 dimarzio cruiser bridge models at the middle and neck positions, they are not that hot to be honest. But the tones are not that different i agree with that, but Andy sounds like himself on anything, and thats how it should be. He also has an octavia, OC2, and a G-force normally, but this video it is just some clean and dirty sounds
I know that the tone is on the fingers and blah blah.. but two key things that get's you very close to his Lonestar tone is a maple neck and Celestion V30s. Lonestar with C90s sounds very different, too loose/bassy. The V30 helps to tighten up the bottom end of the Lonestar. The maple neck gives you that chewy tone that rosewood necks don't have. Again, I know that we'll never sound like him but I'm just saying, to get very close.
Absolutely agreed, to be honest, i like the drive channel more too of the Stiletto than the Lonestar, cause it has some punchier mids must be because of the EL34's But i think there is a little cheating with the clean channel, cause im sure there is the Carl Martin compressor in front of it, which makes the cleans even more sweeter, than it really is:)
i would definitely like for you to show me where i said that "a player's style is determinant on tonality," because i don't believe i said that. if you look at my older comment it says, "you can sound great and suck at the same time. or vice versa." if there is a miscommunication, i'll clear it up. what i am saying is that tonality is not affected AT ALL by the way someone plays. many people have great tone, but play awful. i also know many people who play wonderfully and have horrible tone.
@bluebrowne13 stage 1 it is. Stage 2 has II written on jack input and has a green standby bulb in front. Stage 1 has a horrible drive channel, do not buy it you will regret
no, 80% of the tone definitely doesn't come from the way you play the guitar. 2/3rds of a player's tone is the amp, and the other 1/3 is from the guitar.
there are no single coils at this guitar :))) singles you see have a double magnets :))) and this is not the new model. this one AT100 comes before AT300. AT100 is now reissued by ibanez.
wrongo. great tone takes years of practice. sure, u need great gear, but you also need to learn how to use it. take it from a guy who has a lonestar, bb preamp and nice guitars... i dont sound like andy... though i do like to think my tone is nice considering i havent been playing all that long
They are as much a factor as the amp or the guitar. If you dont know that please refer to my earlier post because, in not knowing this, you demonstrate that you know nothing. Then look up the Ted Nugent plugging into Eddie Van Halen's gear story.
@bluebrowne13 tone is in the fingers, mic+mixer+recording device youtube compression all are factors. As much as I love Andy I hate Ibanez and Mesa boogie.I rate him because he is so talented he can even make Dimarzio (crap) Ibanez and mesa boogie sound good. Save yourself thousands and buy yourself a tube marshall or an orange, maybe even a fender hot rod deluxe or a blues junior and a japanese fender if you dont have enough for american or maybe a basic Gibson SG and see what tone you get.
your so right. the day i discovered andy timmons, was the day i decided i needed this amp.
im currently saving for it.
in my opinion this dude ALWAYS have the absolute perfect tone for every song
I believe he told my brother that he felt the "what is the best amp" question was a complex one. He may have mentioned others but he said he really did love the Lonestar. I think he is being genuine when raving about Mesa Boogie in general and the Lonestar in particular.
Damn Andy always has such sweet tone. Thick, warm, just killer. Plus watching him talk gear and play is inspiring.
"6L6 great clean..." could not agree more andy.
That phrasing at 3:15 crawls my skin. The sound of the guitar makes you want to cry. Awesome tone awesome playing.
Thanks Andy, fantastic tone/chops.

i love his tone. and the way his delay is set up also. has anyone watched the rig demo on mesa/boogie of andy? he explains his delay. its awesome!
The amp plays a big role sure, but his fingers are gold. His touch and feel creates his sound and its fucking beautiful
Even on the bridge humbucker,, he has that incredible blues tone. The more I hear him play, the more hooked I get.
that funk he broke into at 5:09 was amazing!

That Ibanez is sick! It looks like a strat.
@afroloewe dude that chord..couldn't agree more..that transition is just huge,.
officially in the production models it was a Dimarzio AT1, but Andy has a JB in his AT100
FANTASTIC SOUNDS !"
this guy's got awesome tone on his CDs

Hey man, it's an amazing sound, amazing tone! YEAAAAH!
great tone...
and that GUITAR!!! what a great Ibanez!
i just said it was based on the JB because it was (and probably is) his favorite pickup and he said it came out even better and as you say it sounds like a breed almost

Mesa does it again! and andy is more than worthy to handle their amazing tone!
The tone at 4:55 sold me on this amp
Hey man, seems like you have the same taste in gear as me. I'm continuing to make small tweaks to the lonestar, and I'm finally getting my tone to where I want it. I also moved the amp from my room into a jam space, and man it sounds so much better in a large room.
Its starting to sparkle the more I treak it.
i saw in another video that andy ALWAYS plays his lonestars at full power. even in the studio when he isnt turned up very loud.
thats awesome man
@1dangus1. The answer to your question is tough. When I was making that choice, I went to a shop to try out all the current mesas (except the ED and mark v which weren't out yet). @4:13 pure tube magic, great tone..
Also, I should point out that the lonestar amps all have identical preamps. The same goes for stilleto series. The differences are in the power sections. X 100....dead on. best tone on earth
5:21 that is an awesome lick!!
to me, sound and town are the same, but if you replaced sound with "feel", then i can definitely agree with you.
Yeh its an old Van halen lick with a spin on it great pl
5:10 best tone ever!
that would be sweet, but i would really like to see andy timmons, satch, and robben ford.
Yes - check ebay or gumtree - both have ones on it at the mo!
hum canceling singlecoils ;) cruisers to be exact - look'em up on the dimarzio homepage. they use dual blades, which are not wound individually, which makes it one single coil, that produces the sound

3:14 Best lick ever :O
did't know that...
agreed, 80% of the tone comes from the playing...
it is the brain of his Voodoo Lab GCX Ground Control unit, he has the foot controller of it on the floor so you can not see it
holy ****!!! 2:18 - 2:35 just made me go crazy. The chord at 2:26 is insanely beautiful. Seeing this makes you wanna burn your guitar, seriously.
very true! but it is a great amp. I love mine.
I'm curious if Andy has had a chance to checkout the new Electra Dyne, and if so, what his thoughts are on the amp.
hey man, thanks for uploading this. Wondering if you can help me. I recently bought a lonestar classic 2x12 combo, and I love it, but it is lacking slightly in the shimmer department. He used Rectos briefly back in the 90s, but I don't think he's as big on the Recto kinda tone.
I own a RKII though, and can't recommend that sucker enough!
I noiced that this guy and Petrucci sound somewhat alike. in regards to their playing.
Insanely good sound.. From a set of insanely good fingers... It's about 50% OF THE SOUND.. Or 80%??
Lone Star VS Stiletto im buying one..
pros and cons?
he has a Duncan JB at the bridge and 2 dimarzio cruiser bridge models at the middle and neck positions, they are not that hot to be honest.

3:55 The last 3 notes of that lick remind me of a song, but i can' remember for the life of me what one. any ideas?
so you believe your fingers are what produce the sound that comes out of speakers?
@BATHUMAN Really? The drive channel at 4:55 + sounds pretty good to me...
does anyone know if he is using any sort of noise reduction on the lonestar?
Somzeiraaaaa ahh eu com um brinquedo desses
uber tight and no fizz \m/
Does anybody know if Andy uses the reverb
How much do Lonestars cost? Sounds fantastic!
wow! i have a 'mesa fund' so i can save up to get one of those beasts.
by the way.. what amp options did he recommend u?
does anyone know if there is a MEsa Boogie Lonestar available in IRELAND ? .. By any chance ( i know its a stupid question for a youtube video )
Does anyone know if thats a Duece Stage 1 or Stage 2 in this vid??
that's a Mesa/Boogie Lonestar Head
I think there is no need of amplifier on a desert island even for andy timmons :D I suggest him an ukelele or banjo :D
what kind of echo is he using in the loop
I want a lonestar! :(
No, it's a Deuce, the 100 watt version.
Ace = 50
Deuce = 100
Trident = 150
i think PerdroNoShit meant to say 4:14 to 4:17. that is the song deliver us.
Did he ever say why he prefers 2 212s instead of a single 412?
Is that a Mesa Stiletto Ace?
@Hemorrhophrodite
bAhwah ahahahahahah.....still laughin....holy shit that's funny....and true....thanks for that.....SM
3:32
No the stiletto duce stage II
@nextbestguitarist Cheers for trying. Anyone else????
try the Electra dyne man and tell us what you think is the best for you...
@deadringer13 Ugh i had the song you were thinking of maybe until i started writing grrrr.....
@cjMhill Fuuuuuuu-
I'm SO jealuos! :D
i find that EL34 gives better clean sounds than 6L6
skill and talent decides if someone is a good player, not if their tone is decent. you can sound great and suck at the same time. or vice versa.
pffff i'll bet he could make any amp sound good
i would definitely like for you to show me where i said that "a player's style is determinant on tonality," because i don't believe i said that. if you look at my older comment it says, "you can sound great and suck at the same time. or vice versa." if there is a miscommunication, i'll clear it up.

Nooo, I should've listened to you
what about the skill and talent?
i dunno who this andy simmons fella is.
@bluebrowne13 stage 1 it is. Stage 2 has II written on jack input and has a green standby bulb in front. Stage 1 has a horrible drive channel, do not buy it you will regret
too late!
