Banks and Jennings two of the greatest goalkeepers the world has ever seen.

At the start of 1972 George Best was the greatest player in the world (he was, for example, only second in the 1971 BBC Sports Personality of the Year because of a fiddle allowing Anne Windsor to win).
By the end of 1972, and this show is close to it, his greatness was gone forever, and I still find it so so sad.

Brilliant, thanks for uploading. Always great to see a "new" vintage football show.

I remember that game at The Hawthorns. I haven't seen footage of this game before but I remember going down there to watch MacDougall's debut after he was signed to great fanfare from Bournemouth. He was paired up front with Wyn Davies who came over from City. MacDougall scored on his home debut the following week against Birmingham in a 1-0 win. Thanks so much for posting this.

R.I.P Gordon Banks (30/12/1937-12/02/2019, aged 81, 😥), total legend & the reason for the saying ‘Safe as the Banks of England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿’ what a goalkeeper he was, rated as the World’s best on his day. 😢 73 England Caps (1963-1972).

England had a hotbed of good keepers around this time. What a great man to be setting the standard for Shilton, Clemence etc.

@@112sje Absolutely agree, Gordon was the standard bearer for future England ‘keepers. Clemence & Shilton would vie for the number one shirt for the next 10 years plus after Banks’ forced retirement.

@@112sje is that what kept him out of the West Germany game & Peter Bonetti had a bit of a nightmare 🙈? Perhaps Alex Stepney (who I think was 3rd keeper?) should’ve got the nod? We’ll never know, but England could’ve won it again if Banks had stayed match fit??

@@Scottfree166 My Dad was a huge Banks fan because he read the game so well. He never liked Bonetti because he said he relied on making too many spectatuclar diving saves. "Shilts" was the best we have had since but remember Peter learned from the master as Stoke !

Sad to think it was only weeks later when Gordan Banks had his accident and lost an eye. R.I.P. Gordan.
Strange for me seeing Jimmy Hill on The Big Match, I grew up watching him present Match Of The Day (from '73)

Would this have been Gordon Banks last game before the car accident that curtailed his career?

It was 2 weeks later, at Anfield, against Liverpool. It's on TH-cam as well this game, shown on Granada TV.
