It's interesting that Layne and Jerry had different life experiences. Jerry was homeless and Layne would invite him home for supper. Heroin, opiates in general, are poison. Don't let the "doctor" give them to you.

Let's not forget that while Layne was fighting for his life, trying to get off the needle, James Hetfield would stand on stage and make fun of him for having to cancel a show here and there. He'd do an exaggerated parody of Layne's "shitty" vocal style, and say how "anyone" could get up on stage and do it, "even if they are a little sick". I was 20ish during that time and remember it like yesterday. Never sat well with me and I lost a lot of respect for Metallica back then. The way he treated one of their own, during one of the lowest points in Staley's short life, speaks volumes as to the kind of person Hetfield is.
I realize there are probably going to be a few Metallica super fans that will get their panties in a knot about this post, but it is what it is.

It’s widely established that, as he put it, once his “balls dropped” he couldn’t sing things like Cemetery Gates anymore and thus had to evolve into his style on Vulgar Display of Power. I’m talking about being able to scream in general. If you watch the Pro-shot live version of This Love, you can see how well he’s able to scream. I think the Superjoint Ritual albums blew his voice. When you listen to the “Caught Up in the Gears of Application” album, though it sounds phenomenal, he can no longer sing like he used to. Even his live shows now. He used to be able to have his voice echo through a stadium, now his voice can go no higher than a whisper (I’m being facetious)
Again, I’m not hating. I love Phil and I still love his new albums. But his voice is not the same as it was during Far Beyond or Reinventing the Steel.
