Hi Cathy, No need to apologize for fatigue. I don't work outside the home and I can't imagine the amount of work you have teaching with chronic pain issues. I want to try Balzac one day, but I'm a bit afraid. Aloha friend
It is one of those books I keep thinking about. I think I liked it more than I thought I did? I just feel like I haven't quite figured him out yet as an author.
I liked the Balzac more than you did, but your impressions are very interesting! Old Goriot is like the King Lear of the mean streets of Paris. The more I have read of Balzac, the more I enjoyed how his characters keep popping up in new contexts.
I read Barnaby Rudge years ago and I guess from my goodreads review I didn't like it as much. But I wonder if now as an older, (wiser?) reader I might like it better now?
I was trying to read Balzac also and kind of gave up, I thought “oh this person is having a good time writing this but I’m either not in the mood or can’t connect regardless.” But then again I’ve been escaping/ life-processing into my comfort reads for the past 4 months 😂.

You read such interesting books... all those classics. Some I've never heard of before!
Thank you so much! I meander along my own slightly unusual path I guess. I wish I could read more but I do get bogged down with work.
you definitely have me interested in that Charles Dickens!
Dickens is great!!!

He is growing on me more in hindsight. I keep thinking back to the book, it is haunting me a bit. All good signs I would say.
@@thegrimmreader3649 Very interesting! That happens to me often. The book slowly burns inside, and I keep mulling it over.
I'm definitely going to give Barnaby a go now - I enjoy Simon Vance as a narrator, he's done a lot of Guy Gavriel Kay's novels too
Vance was so great. I loved his David Copperfield too.

yes that could be. I think I am enjoying him more than I did when I was studying English lit in Frankfurt.
