  • Chat about my first week back teaching, Trollope's The Eustace Diamonds and "Honeycomb" the final installment in Pilgrimage I by Dorothy Richardson. Lily can be heard (and seen for a wee bit) at certain points in the video.Apologies for the ac noise and the annoying sunlight!

    I’m really intrigued by Richardson now. 😊

    First week back can be tough -- I don't miss those aches and pains. I was on campus briefly on Sunday just before the move-in day chaos descended. There's an odd charm in watching new students wandering around semi-lost and very happy in their befuddlement. Richardson is on my horizon--I thought the first novel (Pointed Roofs?) was very good but I haven't circled back to borrow the rest.

      and now we're in week nine: it's been a bit rough bc of the completely new textbook (all online) but I'm managing and sense I have a bit more energy than last year. (maybe because I didn't teach in Germany during the summer?)

    Happy birthday month! The Trollope book sounds interesting.

    I have long been very interested in Dorothy Richardson! One time at college I found a copy of one of her books that had been checked by Saul Bellow (per the library card).

      I keep thinking about her prose. Want to start the next volume soon.

    I really like what Richardson had to say about her writing being more like a pool or ocean than a stream (of consciousness).
    Sorry to hear that your first week back at teaching was difficult. I hope the stress on your mind and body will lessen once you get into the new rhythm.

    • @thegrimmreader3649
      @thegrimmreader3649  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, I need to get used to the different rhythm! and I also need to get better at dealing with my anxiety. Making this video meant I went to bed much too late, but I am so happy with everyone's comments that it was worth it! I'll have to see how I film my next weekly updates: maybe even more casually than these already are. Or on Saturday instead of Sunday. We shall see.

    I’m glad I have The Eustace Diamonds to look forward to once I’m done with the Barsetshire series. 😊😊

      Reading the Palliser novels makes me want to start again with the Chronicles. Maybe not The Warden though, for some reason the main character there annoyed me a bit? He was a bit too sweet? Always pretending to play a musical instrument. (a bit harsh I know). Maybe start with the Barchester Towers. Sorry I haven't had a chance to comment more on your videos I have been watching them!!

      @@thegrimmreader3649 , oh thanks for watching! I can understand how one could feel that way about The Warden. Without knowing what was coming next, I remember reading The Warden and loving the humor, the narrator...it'll always have a special place in my heart. No rereading this series though for me. I can barely keep going with the next one because it's such a chunkster...the Small House at Allington i think it's called.

    • @thegrimmreader3649
      @thegrimmreader3649  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe I need to reread it too. They are chunksters, but listening to them really speeds things up! When I only read them they did take me a long time, although I found they got quicker towards the end? @@thelefthandedreader6632

    I would like to get around to reading Trollope's Palliser novels next year. I can relate to your trials with arthritis. I suffer from it too.

    • @thegrimmreader3649
      @thegrimmreader3649  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Arthritis is an ongoing issue, isn't it! The Palliser novels are wonderful! But so are the Barsetshire ones!! I'm impressed with how different the two series' feel. I really also want to read some of his stand-alone works!

    So fun hearing your HOBONICHI stories. I remember those days. I’m not into fountain pens either. Another messy Marvin checking in. I prefer a very fine gel or ball point nib. I’m very heavy handed, so those help me write smaller and neater. Interesting commentary on Gilead and goodness. I sure love that book and Lila too. Such a beautiful pairing. I don’t know why I’ve never thought about it before, but now I’m wondering if a trollop came from Trollope. Interesting. I am doing Shorty September for the very first time and having the time of my life. Hope you get adjusted to the back to school routine quickly. It said the energy, doesn’t it? ❤️🍎🤓

      trollop apparently comes from troll? "1610s, "slovenly woman," often with implications of moral looseness, probably from troll (v.) in sense of "roll about, wallow." I loved Lila even more than Gilead. And I liked "Home" less because I thought that one male character (Jack) was not dealt with harshly enough: everyone tiptoed around his awfulness. Lila made me tear up a lot. Cannot wait for my Hobonichi order to arrive! The cover I ordered from A has already arrived and I love it!!!
