Many thanks Carol. We are thinking of doing something different for the next one. We already have footage to use, but may just try to do this next story a little differently.
In June 1941, the rationing of clothes was introduced on a principle of ‘points-rationing.’ The basic entitlement for each adult was 66 points, or coupons, per year. The coupon holder could purchase clothes to their points value throughout the 12 month period. A lady’s winter coat required 15 coupons. A pair of men’s trousers required 8 coupons.
This being a double edged blade, could have been a military knife and could have been owned by a military man, trained to use it. The speed of his escape was undoubtedly aided by the blackout and sounds like that of a youngish man and a man with revenge in mind, perhaps someone on leave. The blackout would have aided the attack on perhaps the wrong person, but a horrible way for a young woman to die. Once again, an interesting and a very well made video Chris and Vickie.
That would make sense, regarding the knife. Also, Arthur Heys was around 21 years old in 1941 from what I remember reading, so again, fits into the younger man scenario. Its also strange how no more attacks were mentioned after the death of Eileen and it makes myself and Vickie wonder if the man in question was called up for service shortly after and obviously had to leave Colne. Again, this would fit perfectly with Arthur Heys.
I think it was the same attacker in both cases. He was frustrated by his victim getting away the first night, so he made sure the next night that his next victim wouldn't. At least according to the classes I've taken in forensic psychology! 😉 Edit: I don't think the police knew who the perpetrator was, at least not around the time the crimes took place. Maybe there was gossip, or an unreliable confession sometime between the crimes and the article claiming that they knew, but a lot can happen in 25 yrs. People die, tall tales are told, and truth gets embroidered. Maybe they even did have an idea who it could have been, but that man was dead, and there wasn't enough evidence to name him publicly. Either way, thanks for another great video!
Im not convinced they knew him. As you say, the officer who was interviewed for that piece in 1966, was he working on the case at the time or just heard whispers, gossip? It just seems so hard to believe they knew the culprit but never persued it more.
Hello Chris and Vicky well done with this interesting video and very sad 😢 at the same time. Poor Eileen to have had her life taken so callously is so sinister to say the least. She probably didn't even feel the knife stabbing her, she just thought that the perpetrator hit her in the back. What a cowardly way to kill somebody from the back. It's a pity that the first lady that was attacked couldn't of got a glimpse of this perpetrator, to help the police Because obviously there was no one who saw the man. I agree with Vicky that both these cases could have definitely been the same person, only difference he didn't have a knife on him. Second time round he made sure that he was armed. Thanks again Chris and Vicky for a very informative video. Just a huge pity that the case went cold and that no one was arrested, so that Justice could have taken place. Feel sorry for her parents who had to live with such a huge void in their lives. 🙏🙏
Thank you for remembering this poor young lass. The church warden or vicar may have details of the plot numbers and a burial map of the cemetery. Failing that, the council will have all these details and they may even be online. There might not be gravestones as most people could not afford them. Another tip is to contact your local history group who may have compiled lists of burials in local cemeteries. I have found this out by doing my family history. Hope this helps to find her and her family. Regards xx
If you do not get anywhere with the above, contact a local gravedigger....maybe via a funeral directors....they always have info re plot numbers and will help you find the numbers and row markers on gravestones. They are always interested in finding stuff fir you. Xx
I looked into reports of the Beccles case and, according to them, Arthur Heys was 37 in 1944 when that murder was committed, so, if true, he is unlikely to have been the Colne murderer as he was older than the murderer was thought to be. I think the police might well have had an idea who was responsible but, with no witnesses or concrete evidence, were unable to pursue it. Just my thoughts, thanks for another interesting video.😊
It's always those who do a lot for the community and who have a good heart that seems to suffer the most. Those that couldn't care less about others and do what they want, well, they seem to get away with it all the time. Life is cruel and harsh and sometimes hard to understand.
Chris and Ricky and yet another brilliant video this. Is such a hard one to work out maybe there was a cover up who really knows and the poor victims and families there the ones that suffer Thanks again very informative
Hi there, love your channel, I think it was the same man who attacked Eileen and the other girl because profilers say killers usually attack within a five mile radius of where they live and as your wife pointed out he may have thought to bring a weapon for the second attack, it's known offenders escalate. I also wondered if he was called up because they don't stop they usually get more skilled. I also wondered if you checked to see if there had been a peeping Tom locally in the weeks/months leading up to the crime what you might discover. Just an idea I don't know anything about these things but it's just a thought. 😊
A cover up by the police? Over zealous media? Definitely a connection between all the attacks but sadly poor Eileen succumbed to her injuries Such a shame you couldn’t find her final resting place but thank you for trying Another excellent video I’d never heard of this account before Well done Chris & Vickie Shared once again 👍🏻
Thank you so much for your support and for sharing this story. We do get frustrated when visiting all these graveyards and cemeteries only to not be able to locate the graves. It feels like for every 1 we do find, there are 10 more we don't.
You're a star ! Thanks you for watching and commenting and yeah always disappointing when you have a location and or grave number but still cannot locate 😢
That's the question 🤔 Did they? Or was it a high-profile member of the public, and they covered it up like a few have thought!. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀
Great video as always i do think both attacks are linked my first though was a police officer or a night watchman i don't know why i think that but thats my thoughts 😊
A tragic case. Attacks on women and children are particularly vile. If she'd had previous boyfriends, perhaps she'd split up with one of them and he was unhinged and vengeful. He might have been waiting in the dark for her to appear. I wonder if the police questioned men she'd known?
They questioned over 5,000 people at the time, so I'd have thought those she once knew would have been spoken to, or you would have thought the police would have gone down that line of enquiry. Very good point 👍
Great video Chris & Vicki, tough one this with lack of evidence, possibly all linked but proving hasn't been easy, I think they are all linked just my theory, ( like & subscribe) both Chris & Vicki bring great content as always thanks for sharing 😊
During the first attack, could he have dropped his weapon. If she fought back, he may have dropped it in the commotion and then grabbed it up as he fled? In any case I agree that he just wasn't ready the first time, but he learned from it. Love your videos!
In regards to the murder, the fact that it was committed in such a public place, and it would have been unlikely that given more time the offender would have taken the victim away, might indicate that the victim did not know the attacker and the attacker appears not to have been worried about being identified, both of which both could suggest the offender was not from the local area, in the failed attack the area was less busy and presented more opportunities for a victim to be hidden. So delaying discovery of the crime, and possibly indicating he might have been more familiar with that area. I would suggest that if the offences were carried out by the same offender he was relatively in experience, and his failure at the first attack increased his drive to kill As for the weapon, a knife with a blade six inches long and sharp on both edges would be unlikely to have a retractable blade or be a kitchen knife. But perhaps a commando type weapon, which might suggest a starting point to look for suspects,as the place the victim was stabbed seemed targeted which might suggest the offender was familiar with the use of a bladed weapon. ( it would be more likely that and inexperienced person would the with the hilt resting on the thumb , and strike in to the lower back in a downward back to frontal arc, whereas to stab in the upper back the knife would have been held we the blade hilt against the little finger end of the hand and used and a straight trajectory by raising the arm up and bending at the elbow to thrust). Or I might be totally wrong 🙂
Thanks guys a wonderful and sad story I think you are right about the newspaper they just wanted more sales and the police didn't know the attacker and I think like Vicki it could be the same man thanks guys looking forward to the next chapter take care
A serviceman home on leave who found his girl was now going with someone else. She was probably a member of the dewing class Eileen attended, but the killer mistook Eileen for the girl he had been courting before he had been called up. This was due to the poor light on a wet evening. The knife used was probably a military weapon of some description.
I like the idea of the police knowing who the murderer was, because it gives the murder of Eileen a motive. Other than that I can't see a motive for her killing. It seemed she was killed for no reason, which I'm not convinced. Police will often know who the perpetrator of a crime is, but it's what they can prove is what they can act on. For me, it fits that she was murdered by mistake, but who could she have been mistaken for. Fascinating case
another video like they say you never let us down in those days I bet there were a lot , more another girl loose,s her life perhaps the police new somebody,in the area but didn’t say there was a war on.sad for Ellie thanks Chris and Vickie
Hi there guys fink some one would have done that to some in them Days that he a sicko. Ihope they have got him Sumbag like him .yes I fink it Was the same sumbag didn't get right the first time he got Next young girl the first one He have a anyfin to hurt he The 2nd young girl got killed By the sumbag he sought have keep his killing for the army . so guys thank you for a great video story and may the young girl R.I.P . so guys be safe.
great story with a sad outcome,my thinking is that the police knew the person responsible, but that person had friends/family in high places that could potentially cause scandal/embarrasment ie politician/aristocracy/military , hence never mentioned in press again, happenened a lot in ww2. look forward to many more stories from the past.
i think vicky was spot on definitely same man he used a weapon next time as he could have been identified by his victims it was 1941 the guy could have been called up and died in the war who knows ????? great video again .
What a tragic story. I think the police knew who it was and it was a man with 'power' so they couldn't release his name and if he had great power, then he would've easily got a false alibi from someone to cover for him? Then the police wouldn't have been able to bring a case against the man.
The article in 1966 and regarding the police saying they knew who the culprit was is very interesting but debatable. In my head, I just cannot understand why they never brought him to justice IF they really did know who it was. This person had an alibi from all accounts, but even if his alibi wasnt true, I would have though the police, with a little more digging, would have seen right through it. It just seems a very odd article to have been written.
Hi you both! I am always happy to listen to your stories and give my opinion because I always try and work things out in my mind! I do believe there was two different men! If he hat a young girl, he could have stabbed her as well, usually holding a knife in your hand as big as it was would easily been used on a person struggling! Thank you so much for sharing!
Sometimes the police do know who does these crimes, but have no proof and cannot make an arrest, but they do not usually go telling the newspapers! I think the journalist, just like today's, wanted to make a himself look more informed than he was.
chris and vickie this a great story a mystery such a great same for this to have happend . if the police new and left it there it might be because he was a mason or a good friend is has been known to be that in the past and to this day but what do i know , thank you so much from trev and christine down south xxxxx
We have had mixed responses from councils. Many want a payment, with some charging onwards of £30 just to send us a small file detailing a grave number or a location. It's just not viable to pay for these, especially with the number of videos we make and the number of graveyards we visit. Why they charge so much is beyond us.
Another great Days of Horror video, I think the perpetrator of this cruel crime was always going to kill, it seems he practiced attacking young women and realised without a weapon he could be beaten off and possibly identified.
Just like to add to my former comment: The killer was not hanging around on the corner where the murder took place for nothing. He was obviously waiting for someone, which suggests it was someone attending the sewing class, which appeared to be the only place where people, primarily women, were congregated. No one hangs about a street corner on a cold, wet night for nothing.
The Police didn't pursue the suspected murder because his 'Alibi' was probably someone in authority. Just a thought. 🤔. Thanks both, enjoyable mystery. 👍🫶
Chris and Vickie you never let us down - you work so hard and we really appreciate it folks x
Many thanks Carol. We are thinking of doing something different for the next one. We already have footage to use, but may just try to do this next story a little differently.

did they have clothing rations in those days?
Yes they did - very strict too

Glad you enjoyed it :-)

Thanks for another great video. Sorry you couldn't find the grave of Eileen, it must have been so frustrating.
Very Frustrating when you have a location and still can not locate it. Thanks for your kind comment, Valerie, too. Have a great week 😊
@@Daysofhorror-vickie you two as well.
Thank you for bringing these back to life.very interesting.

Many thanks Dorothy 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting Dorothy 😊
Another interesting video Chris and Vicky.
Thanks Keith 👍
Looks like the police were covering for somebody to me. Such a sad story . Sorry you couldnt find her grave
It would appear so! It does seem very strange.
Yeah it's always disappointing when we have a location or grave number but cannot locate 😢

What a great point Vickie.
That's all I could think of. Thanks for watching Dawn xx
What a dreadful thing to happen..poor young lady.so well told by two of the best. Its amazing there was no trace of where the bus depot was..
Chris and Ricky and yet another brilliant video this. Is such a hard one to work out maybe there was a cover up who really knows and the poor victims and families there the ones that suffer Thanks again very informative
Thanks Karl for watching and commenting. Yes it is very questionable. From Vickie & Chris 😀
Thank you Chris and Vicki.

Thank you for this video. So tragic for Eileen and her family. I agree with Vicky. A stab with a knife and the victim isn’t going to fight much.
Thanks Patrica for commenting. Have a great week 😀

Another great watch Thanks guy's intresting as always 🌟
Thanks for watching Wendy 😊
Another good story guys well covered again. Another unsolved one tho do you think the police investigated thoroughly enough?
That's the question 🤔 Did they? Or was it a high-profile member of the public, and they covered it up like a few have thought!. Thanks for watching and commenting 😀
Great video as always i do think both attacks are linked my first though was a police officer or a night watchman i don't know why i think that but thats my thoughts 😊
We never gave it a thought it may have been someone of importance. Such as someone in the police. It does give food for thought!
A tragic case. Attacks on women and children are particularly vile. If she'd had previous boyfriends, perhaps she'd split up with one of them and he was unhinged and vengeful. He might have been waiting in the dark for her to appear. I wonder if the police questioned men she'd known?

Colne has a few more dark stories just like this one. We have a few more we will be covering at some point.
Great video Chris & Vicki, tough one this with lack of evidence, possibly all linked but proving hasn't been easy, I think they are all linked just my theory, ( like & subscribe) both Chris & Vicki bring great content as always thanks for sharing 😊
Cheers, Lee. Another unsolved one and perhaps Neil Storey may have something interesting to go on by linking Arthur Heys to the attacks!
Thanks, Lee, for watching and your kind comments 😊
In wartime was there a fully functioning police force with all the men away ?
Thats a very good question!
During the first attack, could he have dropped his weapon. If she fought back, he may have dropped it in the commotion and then grabbed it up as he fled? In any case I agree that he just wasn't ready the first time, but he learned from it. Love your videos!

Pendle Council should have records of where she is buried.
We have had mixed responses from councils. Many want a payment, with some charging onwards of £30 just to send us a small file detailing a grave number or a location. It's just not viable to pay for these, especially with the number of videos we make and the number of graveyards we visit. Why they charge so much is beyond us.

Some things from the 1900's have not changed. I still make my own clothes. 😊
Good for you. Do not hear that alot these days. Take care Jennifer 😊
Even if that poor woman survive the attack
Her attacker stabbed her from behind so it would of been harder for her to identify who it was.
Just like to add to my former comment: The killer was not hanging around on the corner where the murder took place for nothing.
