    The lost art of relaminating old boards. Nicely done. Yours turned out really clean

      Thank you! I haven't seen anyone tear off the laminate before...they usually just paint to hide patches. I thought I'd do it the hard way:)

      @@TheWeirdSide1 I've done a few with the same method as you and I agree, definitely the hard way. On the upside, it's really easy to find cheap old boards with cracked glass that just need re-lamination. It's much more expensive to buy foam blanks

    Well done! Was shocked to find this video, not because of what you've done but because of the board you found/had for rehab. I gave a Blaster a complete redo as well, round pin egg, more or less. I think I paid 10$ for it, the tail and nose were completely rotted. Stripped it, cut a new outline... and applied a redwood/basswood "skin". I'm in the process of glassing now, it's been a great pandemic project. Hoping to get a start to finish slide show up soon. Again, great job - congrats!

      That's amazing! You must be my 43, thank you😃.
      I still need to do a final gloss coat with final tint. Unfortunately I lost that connection/work space and live on a boat. Would love to see what you have done, sounds grand!

    Hey.
    Doesn't the foam loose volume when you releminate it?

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some foam is removed with the old glass and then it's sanded all over, down to low spots, so overall volume is decreased slightly. I had one larger low spot that I think I filled with the foam sanding dust. I wanted a lighter, slightly smaller board, so worked out for me. An 8 ft blank costs like 80-150, so that route might be better for others. In my case, a friend gave me a waterlogged, unusable board, so I decided to fix it rather than buy a new blank.

    I'm considering a full restoration. Is is possible to save the original logos and badges or would they have to be re-done?

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are removing all glass and resin then logos will not survive the process, yes.

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are set on keeping original stickers, you will have to sand down close to them...it will be a lot of sanding and assuming you have 'yellowing' that will show through. You could try sanding top layer and see if yellowing is only surface deep..

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jblecoz I know that method is used to make fishing lures...which are clear coated with epoxy or UV cure...so ink should survive no problem

    How were you able to put the fins back in?

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      AG, are you asking how fins are installed into fin boxes?
      Original fin boxes were not removed

    How long did it take you start to finish?

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was at the cabin doing other projects also so hard to say how many hours. I could do another one in 3-4 days I think with dry time...easy 4 hour days. 2 days possibly if you are really commited to long days.
      She still floats this season! Just got back from a couple trips and some fun runs

    Are you going to glass the wood fins on or are you going to build them for the existing futures boxes?

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! So far I have only glassed over wooden fins on my homemade hollow wooden. I plan to use this board for another season and then do final gloss coat...at that point I will consider wooden fins and will attempt to make them fit into boxes I think. I don't like the the fins they sell commercially so I either have to make my own or buy custom expensive ones...

    Looks like a great job and fun. And exactly what I need to do. What grade of glass and what resin did you use so it wasn't tacky?

    • @TheWeirdSide1
      @TheWeirdSide1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'll just share this from website, but this was my first board so you may want to do research: Resin Research Bio Clear:
      "The new Resin Research Bio-Science resins are ECOBOARD certified plant-based epoxies which offer a reduced carbon footprint.
      This Clear 2000 resin is preferred when working with tints or pigments as it allows the colors to pop. This clear resin will also keep carbons and woodwork colors true, as blue resin additives can turn carbon from black to purple.
      This resin contains similar UV blockers as other Resin Research products, less the blue optical brighteners.
      Slow Hardener (2100S) pot life ~ 30 mins, flip time ~ 4 hrs.
      Fast Hardener (2100F) pot life ~ 20 mins, flip time ~ 2 hrs.
      * Fast hardener 3-quart size pictured. "
      I used middle grade glass in weight 6 I believe. Double layer on deck. Sites were out of tint so I ordered tint powder from Amazon and mixed my own color. It didn't work very well as powder would settle in areas. Looks like a sky view with clouds! I plan to do gloss coat with tint and even out/darken further. Shapersupply.com has all info needed. Greenlight as well. Final video will be more in depth

      I experimented with 'additive F' and got some 'fisheye' in areas. I also had dusty workspace. But even with amateur knowledge and workspace the transformation was rewarding! I really need to post my hollow wooden surfboard build from scratch.. I built using a door skin and cedar deck lumber with no special tool beyond tablesaw. You should have seen the glueup circus show lol!

      lyrics are "...content...". NOT 'cword'. so your misunderstanding is the only thing objectively at fault here.
