The mine is the building right next to the railroad -- you wouldn't know it was a mine, because it just looks like a tourist shop. But the mine entrance is inside. I honestly can't imagine what it would have been like to work in a mine -- that's really hard work!
Lk13 👍, what a great place to explore, especially for me as I love the wild Western feel of the place. You video was both informative and also so so interesting. Great share, stay blessed and safe, your friend Traveller MIA 🇬🇧
Thank you! You'll have to come out and see the real wild west sometime! There's a ranch at Joshua Tree I want to visit, and some cool towns in Northern CA that still have store fronts from the western times. Those are the best, because people are still living there and using the buildings for regular stores, rather than as museums or tourist attractions. Have a wonderful Christmas holiday, and stay safe!
You are fun to watch! And the information you gave is great :) we are here now and about to go check out the buildings you pointed out before heading home. Cheers
Thank you so much for stopping by! I saw their video this morning - it was really good! It was nice to see it with a lot of people & the Christmas decorations!
Wonderful. 😊 The Calico Mine was the only place that the 20 Mule Team was ever used durring the Borax phase. There is an interesting story about the mule team. The mule team, for some reason, could only make right turns. To make a left turn the team had to make a lot of right turns like San Francisco when there are "no left turn" signs or a bunch of One way streets, or just reluctant about making a left turn. Lol In 1993, on a trip across the Country we happened across the Calico Ghost Town and stopped by for a visit. I don't remember the train ride, but I do remember a sign that advertised a "bath" for 5 cents, or a "hot bath" for 15 cents. I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that this was in fact the place that inspired the Calico Ghost Town at Knotts Berry Farm. Apparently from what I still remember, some of the buildings at Knotts Berry Farm were actually disassemble and reassembled at the roadside berry stand to attract customers and entertain them. I would suspect that the buildings that were reconstructed, were the ones now in the theme park. My mom tells me stories about going on a date with my dad (mid 1950s) when it was just a restaurant, berry stand, and old buildings. I find it fitting that Mr. Knotts preserved the ghost town while making preserves. Thank you so much for this little adventure. ☺😎🙋
Wow, I did not know that about the 20 mule team! Such a sweet story about your Mom & Dad going on a date! Preserving the ghost town while making preserves ... haha!! Thanks for watching and sharing those stories!
Thank you for another very informative video. Had a short visit on my trip to the US so long ago. I was wondering if there are any remains of a cemetary. Do you know anything about it? Greetings from Vienna, Austria
Hi Michelle, I didn't see a cemetery there, but I googled it, and found this web site: www.interment.net/data/us/ca/sanbern/calico/calico.htm I went back through my footage to see if I had inadvertently gotten it, but I hadn't. I don't remember seeing a cemetery there at all.
@@JasmineApple Thanks Jasmine, I found a few videos of a cemetery there on youtube. You should check them out. There was also a short one of an abandoned cemetery, would love to know more about that.
Did you see the metal sculptures near the interstate right outside of Barstow? I talked with the owner there and almost did a video. He didn't want to stir up anymore unwanted attention though. 🤔🦾🤖🛡️
I did - I stopped by and filmed, planned to do a video. Someone had set fire to one of their sculptures, & it was a black, charred mess. So I understand his trepidation.
No kidding!!! The door wasn't locked, and I thought about going inside, but since I knew it was closed, and I would get kicked out, I decided to save myself some trouble and just stayed outside. I remember you, though. You came out a few minutes later, locked the door behind you, smiled, and left. Nice to officially meet you! I hope to come back sometime in the next few months, when the saloon is open.
This is the best video I've watched on our Calico. I live in Yermo and I love going there.
Thank you, Lori!! I had a blast when I was there, & I'm definitely going back!
I love this video! Excellent work!
Thank you so much!
Fun town 😀 I didn’t see the mine last time I was there.

My dad took us to calico a few times in the 80s and 90s. The leaning house tour was free then.
That is so cool! Yeah, not much is free anymore!
