The ORIGINAL Del Taco!

  • Many people are under the impression that the Del Taco chain started in Barstow....but that's not the case! The FIRST Del Taco location was in a tiny outpost outside Barstow called Yermo, CA...and it's still there, though it's now under new ownership and is no longer a Del Taco restaurant. These days it's called Tita's Burger Den, and it is an awesome place to stop for a bite on the way to/from Vegas -- in fact, it's pretty much exactly halfway between Hollywood and Vegas. What a spot!

    I'm so glad we found this video. I've been watching for approx a year now and this evening was my wife's first time. She was SO EXCITED because she was born in Yermo, Ca and her family owns Upton's Market, the store you mentioned. They sold everything from food, fresh meat, groceries, toys, etc. and her step-mother worked at the Marine base there. We where at the diner, the original Del Taco, approx. 20 years ago on our way to Vegas and have many pictures of us eating at those picnic tables. She loved seeing this video as it's took her back to her early childhood.

      Wow my husband lived in Yermo too! His mom still lived there when I met him. He worked on the marine base after high school. Upton’s was still there when I met him but no thrift store and no Tito’s. We would eat at Del Taco in Barstow whenever we were in the area.

      Not to take away from Titos,
      There used to be two brothers in Sligman Arizona.
      One had a burger joint, the other a barber shop if I recall correctly. Had a few burgers there over the years. Side by side.
      Worth a stop!

    Now that you found the original Del Taco you can now find the original McDonalds hamburger chain started by the McDonald brothers in San Bernardino CA. My friend grew up 4 blocks away as a little girl and often wen there with her parents to buy burgers. The building is still there and has been converted into a McDonalds museum. And while you're there stop and see an original Atlantic Richfield Gas station on route 66 AKA Foothill Blvd in Ranch Cucamonga CA. It is also a museum run by some retired guys and gals. I love your work.....

    Actually, they started their business in Yermo then, expanded their business in Barstow in two locations. Which was very successful, in turn, resulted in their franchise. Nice of you to show this place off. Didn't know if they still serving food there.😊

    Yep, three Del Taco's in Barstow. The older one on First Street by the old bridge by the Harvey House, the one off the I-15 Lenwood offramp and the one you were at on Mountain View. Another good Mexican Food place is "Plata's" on Irwin Road near the intersection of Old Highway 58. Next time you are coming through town (Barstow) you ought to give it a shot.

      You're right, the first del taco ins't in barstow. But the original owners of del taco still own the del tacos in barstow. Any other del tacos are franchised. The franchised del tacos do not have all the original recipes which is why it tastes better at the barstow del tacos which are still owned by the original owners

    • @TheOtherMeLV
      @TheOtherMeLV 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The family that started Del Taco moved the original one to the main drag in Barstow. Though they are no longer a part of the chain their Del Taco does serve the food the way it was originally intended with full wedeges of tomato and fresh grated cheese.

    First and foremost, I must say I just discovered you here on TH-cam. This video was my 2nd video I watched of yours after looking through your content. Excellent content. You set off a lot of my good feeling nostalgic memories of a once small fast food chain that was born in the High Desert of SoCal. Del Taco was part of a lot of my better and happier childhood moments from as far back as I can remember up to just past High School graduation..You have earned a fan that will be enjoying as much of your content when I have those moments of Ï don’t need to do anything productive” or “I don’t want to be productive” moments. I love the fact that you are enthusiastic, entertaining and I believe I will be learning a lot more about these places you are sharing with us. Thank you for that. OK, here is my comments related to your content here about this Original”Del Taco…(This is so Cool, like you, Ms. Wonderhussy!)
    I moved away from the High Desert back in 1988, via joining the US Military but have returned on occasion due to family and friends that still lived in the area or passing through on some nostalgic based road trip. But Del Taco (especially in Barstow was a must happen food stop for me and mine.
    Somehow, I stumbled upon Del Taco in St Louis, MO when I was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Then, after being PCSed to Fort Carson, Colorado in the summer of 2009…Del Taco moved into Colorado Springs, CO, the city right outside Ft. Carson’s entry gates that fall. We had 1, close to the post, and 2 more sprung up within a year…but the one closest to the post has closed. I will say, the corporate expansion, franchises have NEVR tasted as good as those first few Del Tacos in the California High Desert. Whether it was the Yermo location, Barstow’s 1st Street location or even my first experience of DelTaco in Victorville’s first Del Taco established in 1968 on 7th street (the Main Street in Victorville up until the early 2000s) Which I have recently discovered has been demolished.
    Info since you said you had another Mexican-American fast food franchise on your list: Naugles Is now an independent SoCal chain with 3 locations in the Orange County area. Stanton, Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley. the have reemerged on the SoCal scene back in 2015 after the current owner of the registered name was granted ownership of the name after going through TTAB proceedings to claim the name after proven abandonment of the name by the Del Taco Corp. I have no idea if the current entity taste anything like that of the Naugles I grew up with in the Mojave Desert. I always preferred Del Taco anyways.

    When I worked at Ft Irwin, I live down the street to This Del Taco location, but it seems to me that Taco Bell had it's first store around there too. I learned from Wonderhussy. I lived in the High Dessert all over, but I never knew about the REAL original Del Taco.
    By the way, the reference to Evening Star Mill, 4:43, is likely to be part of the Evening Star Mine, in the area of Kelso, in the Eastern Mojave Preserve, which you have explored. In the area of Kelso/Cima Rd, Cima Rd, Morning Star Mine Rd.

    The first ever Del Taco was in Yermo, California, opened in 1964, and the original building is still there. It is shown in this video from 5:03 until the end. It's now Tita's Burger Den, the food is good and it's a great deal. Around $5 to $6 for a burger, fries and drink. Both Mexican and American food, and all homemade. The second ever Del Taco, which is seen from 0:23 to 1:33 in this video, is in Barstow and still operates today as a Del Taco.

    Nice bit of TACOTRIVIA from none other than WH!
    Good to see you got a battle scar in the forest vs the mall.
    "If WH backs into a tree in the forest does it make a noise?"
    Here is some Del vs Bell Trivia.
    The Del - all items cooked and prepped on site = FRESH
    The Bell - all items are prepped at an off site industrial kitchen and shipped in bags. Meat and Beans are reheated at the final location to be sold.
    *Best post frequent flier meal late night is the Del Bacon Cheeseburger - IMO. But I know that you already know that!

    Hi Hussy! i used to live there and teach at Barstow College. I lived up under the hills, next to the rattlesnake habitat. We got rid of them with garden hoses (which makes them crawl up walls) and shovels. Nice vid, Hussy! Wanna come to Mexico and visit me?

    Nice! I've been to Yermo but never realized this. I'll stop next time for sure. Have you ever stopped at the Burger Hut in Mina? Best hamburger in NV...

    Hey, Peggy Sue's is good...but, I've also ate at the original Del Taco in Yermo. I lived in the San Gabriel Mts to the west, in Wrightwood. This was my first stop when heading up for the day in Calico Ghost town. Another cool Mexican food drive thru was Baker's in downtown San Bernardino lol

    the tacos were a lil bit bigger, been stopping for years. now i think the rest of the Del Tacos adapted theirs now. the guy that started em still owned those stores in Barstow, his pictures are on the walls, idk if he is still around tho.

  • @mrmopp9818
    @mrmopp9818 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're right, the first del taco ins't in barstow. But the original owners of del taco still own the del tacos in barstow. Any other del tacos are franchised. The franchised del tacos do not have all the original recipes which is why it tastes better at the barstow del tacos which are still owned by the original owners

      yeah, LOL.....I was using my cell phone and I guess I accidentally put it into some weird filter mode. I noticed it after I shot the first segment, but I was already in Yermo by then and it was too late to re-shoot. And I thought it looked kinda cool, anyway...

    The Barstow del tacos are owned by the original family and serve some different items then the other del tacos. That's why they are so popular. The bean burritos are bigger along with the other exclusives. I will stop by there on my next trip up the I15.

    Yeah, you're right; one Del Taco don't taste any better than another one because it's a franchise: They have to serve what the franchise tells them to serve. My parents owned an A&W back in the 70's and even back then we were not allowed to alter the menu. That chili cheese fries sure looked good; might just serve that up for dinner tonight.
