My community has what's called "clean up week" where you can put out nearly anything without paying extra for removal. Scrappers drive around and pick up things, people pick up items they're interested in (my whole first apartment was furnished from clean up week), rehabbers pick things to refinish, and the rest is hauled away. It's a fun annual event that helps the community in a lot of ways.

Wonderful wonderful idea. So many things could be reused by those who have much less. One person’s trash truly can be another person’s treasure. Let’s celebrate Earth Day by thinking this way, instead of just assuming everything has to go in the dumpster

A game changer for me was realizing that I could take a minivan full of stuff to the dump for $20. Now, if I need to get rid of larger items that don't fit in my trash, but will fit in my minivan instead of holding on to them for years, I just take them to the dump. Sometimes, these things are way more cost effective than we realize.

My late husband was a forklift mechanic & used to bring home scrap metal from various jobs (with permission) - and once or twice a year, took it to get money for it to pay for his hunting & fishing trips. After he passed, my son started adding to the pile but never got around to taking it to the scrapyard to cash it in. It was an eyesore on my property. I gave him a deadline, and warned that I was going to pay someone to haul it way. He missed the deadline, so I paid someone $100 to take away some garbage plus all that metal.. my son was upset that I wasted money. I told him I'd pay him another $100 not to whine about it. lol. I just wanted it off of my property. It was totally worth it!

Amen! Years ago I bought a very ornate mirror with no frame, just mirror cut into fancy shapes, surrounding the 40” oval mirror. It was beautiful and about $50, which seemed unbelievable, so I bought it immediately and congratulated myself for scoring such a treasure. In the store, the fancy and fragile edges were protected by lots of cardboard, which I immediately discarded when I got it home. I hung that mirror in our bedroom for a couple of years until I finally acknowledged that it looked ridiculous there. I then moved it to our living room, which we use when company visits, and it wasn’t the place for this “castle-like” decor either. I kept it there for several years-even though it again looked ridiculous. After far too many years of dealing with this “blasted thing” I finally cut up lots of cardboard (time wasted), taped the cardboard all around the perimeter (tedious to say the least), borrowed a truck (call a friend, make a date, drive there, drive home), loaded the truck with this even more massive mirror to take to donation place… actually three donation places because the first two didn’t take fragile things that were that big. Returned the truck. Learned my lesson… and now if I see a large ANYTHING I always remind myself that I am going to have to move or discard this thing at some point and that’s usually enough for me to walk on by.

    Many years ago I rented
a dumpster. I walked around our house and yard finding things to toss. It was so fun.
We were not even in the midst of a renovation or project of any kind. Just dealing with our past acquisition life.
One thing in particular I recall tossing was my kids’ keyboard. Soon I noticed the keyboard was gone. I knew whoever had been dumpster diving would be disappointed because the keyboard was broken.
Next morning the keyboard was back in our dumpster! Haha. Smart person.

How timely! I just had a similar realization. My parents are moving and we were about to get the antique, huge, 800 lbs+ family piano moved to our small house. Figuring out the logistics of moving this piano accross cities and into our home was a puzzle and it would have cost thousands. Then we thought it over and declined. We would have that puzzle again in the future if we move. It also made the pressure of 'realizing the potential the piano' anxiety inducing. What if we didn't end up playing it and then still have to care for it and sacrifice space for it? I felt a lot of relief for not taking it!

There is also a run down shack that the previous owner thought would be a great man cave; but it has no running water, electricity or septic, though it has a toilet and water heater. It blew down in a storm and has been sitting in a huge pile for over a year. Again, we thought oh we will take out the usable items and take the rest to the dump. The water heater, toilet and rotten boards are not going to be easy to transport. This is just the motivation I need to go ahead and spend the money to rent a dumpster and fill it with all this stuff and get rid of it once and for all.

I totally agree. I don't own a car, so large items are very difficult to dispose of. I usually wait until I have a few items, then contact a local guy who makes a living collecting things like that and taking it to the dump. Yes, it costs me, but it is worth it. There is nothing worse than looking around your space and seeing a load of furniture that you no longer want, but are now stuck with. The whole principle for decluttering is to bring peace into my home, and having a broken recliner screaming at me from the corner of the room is anything but peaceful.

Yes, we can of course also bring them straight to the waste collection place and pay per kg but having it picked up at your front lawn for free is such a blessing. For us, big items either went in a rummage if we were planning one or out by the road. 99% of the time, especially if out by the road, it gets taken. However, that's not always an option and some things are too big to throw in your car (or sometimes even a pickup) and haul off to donate. How wonderful you were able to chuck it in a very convenient dumpster!

I agree. We have a large family so the last time we got a couch I got the Home Reserve couch which comes apart in small pieces. I’m not a fan of sectionals but I’d rather have this than a huge sofa to move. We can split it into two sofas if we need to. Modular furniture and anything that is small is the name of the game.

I learned the hard way to not let sales people talk you into their color choices. I was okay with a deep, rich brown sofa and then when i went for two recliners, i let a sales person talk me into two gray ones instead of the two neutral beige ones i thought were more color compatible. Nothing wrong with gray if it goes with your scheme but i got seriously burned on that expensive purchase and have lived with a sad color scheme too long

In Nashville, you can call the bulk pick up office provided by the county and book an appointment to have them come with their special claw truck to pick up whatever bulky stuff you have. You have to have it out on the street by a certain day of the appointment by 6:00 AM. Poof it’s gone as soon as the truck comes to pick it up. It’s awesome. You can do it as often as you want as long as you only schedule and hold one appointment at a time. We did it three times before we moved and it was like magic best part completely free!

I second this motion entirely! As a long time yard sailor with my best friend, I have brought home many things that ended up being needing to get rid of. Then you appreciate how nice it is to have only what you have deliberately chosen close to you, and anything else should be in good storage.

This is so true!! My friend's garbage people have a bulk pickup every month and she lets me bring stuff over. I recently found out that our garbage people will pick up some big items from each house once a year. We just have to call them first. It's really difficult when you get older and can't carry big stuff out also. BTW your necklace and earrings are very pretty! Stay well!

My city has bulk pickup days 4 times a year. There are rules about what can and cannot go out on the curb, but its good for most big items that won't fit into the trash cans. Savvy people comb the richer neighborhoods for items to use to sell. You'd be amazed what people will put on the curb because they don't even want to deal with waiting for a pickup from Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity.

We have to separate all our things that are rubbish, 3 separate wheelie bins - household waste, cardboard recycling, plastic and metal recycling - and each one is only emptied every 3 weeks. I'm constantly trying to play catch-up and having to store rubbish in my house until the bin I need gets emptied. The pitfall of not being able to drive! We can't put out extra bags of rubbish either as that's considered fly-tipping and carries a fine.

1800GotJunk is expensive. Even though providing a service, they also prey on old/sick people who are not able to remove "big stuff" themselves. I paid $450 to remove a king sized bed, but, as Dana implies, often having the empty space was worth more than what it cost to get it out. (But, the cost of REMOVAL needs to be figured into each big thing purchased.)

We have put furniture by the road and people take it within a day or two (except for our filing cabines). My pink recliner was in good condition when we put out by the road. We only put it out because we had too many chairs in our house. That day it started to rain, so we had to move it into the garage. Someone took it off our hands and we freed up some space. That recliner, like yours, was a junk collector. I am glad that it was going to a better home. Love your videos!❤

  • @VickiKolman

I have used companies like "1-800-Got-Junk" in the past. You just point at the things you want to go away and they will take it out of the house and away. You have to pay for the service, but it's been fabulous when moving and realizing things we didn't want to take. Or just finally getting rid of those things you can't figure out what to do with. In 15 years, I've used 4-5 times and every time was a big sigh of relief and worth the cost. That being said, I think the price has gone way up, but renting a dumpster has a cost too, and with 1-800, I didn't have to pick anything up myself and get it anywhere.

Yes, yes, Yes! My MIL's boyfriend passed and I wanted to empty the garage while i was between jobs. She's a bit of a hoarder but since the garage was "his stuff" she was willing to let it go. We got the bigger dumpster because it was the same price as the smaller one but you could put bigger stuff into it. She & my husband didn't think we needed it but we filled it up in three days. She was also surprised how much stuff in there was hers. We'll need another dumpster or two when its time to empty out her house. Hopefully that wont be anytime soon. The waste service company in her area was awful to deal with and just delivered it and picked it up when they wanted but fortunately we were able to be flexible and the stuff was gone!
On a personal note, my curb service is also bad but i live in a rural area. We ordered and paid extra for pickup of a big sofa last week. It took them forever to pick it up even though the representative said it would be the next day. I'm going to need a dumpster when we move within a couple of years, after being here for over 20 years. There are many things I'm not willing to move into a new house that are large. Plus, I'm looking at it as my big opportunity to start over and get rid of things I am not moving. It will be a hassle but the relief will be worth it.
This is a great topic and needs to be addressed more. I loved reading everyone's solutions to the large trash problem.

Our local trash service has pickups as part of our service. I called to find out about the small dumpster.. it was a little over a hundred dollars the big one is close to $700! Ours offers one free pickup per quarter(That is 4 times a year and 4 items per pickup which equals a total of sixteen items per year! For free!) Some of you should may be look into this, versus the dumpster. It costs for the dumpster. The pick up is free for big furniture, mattresses , BBQ, old tv’s , etc… Anyways, something to check out. Hope this helps someone.

Thanks for this, Dana! I recently realised the easiest way for me to be rid of things I couldn’t donate especially an old big sofa was just hire a van and take it to my parents’ local refuse and recycling centre. Hopefully someone will want it but if not, it can go in the waste. It’s done great service for over 25 years. Once I realised the decision rid me of anxiety I’ve had for ages, it was a no-brainer.

A couple months ago we needed to have our old sofa hauled off to make room for our new one. I was also emptying our bonus room for a remodel. We hired a company that did a partial move (things going to storage temporarily) and would sell/trash/donate the rest based on their assessment of value.
I made last minute additions (more furniture, electronics including a large plasma TV) when they were there. I know we paid a premium for the convenience but it was worth every penny spent.

Of course we didn’t get a second one. I was so excited to get rid of it all. Our charity stores will come out and pick up large donatable items which is fantastic.
