I've used the Peak Design Capture camera clip for 2 years and I love it. But this week I thought I'd check out a cheaper version and see how it compares to the industry leader. Camera clips have completely changed my photography for the better. I always have my camera to hand now, and miss less shots because of it. So, if there's a cheap clip that does the job, I want to know...

I've just asked for a peak design clip for my birthday 😂 my son went abit white when he saw the price but never the less, I'm sure it's well. Worth it 👍
PGY Tech do the beetle and a POV clip which is much much better (quality and functionality) . If you are carry a heavier camera a sternum pouch is better as in it spreads the load ,is more balanced and offers better camera protection.
Utebit is quite satisfying to say though.

You’ve convinced me to buy one of these... when I can go hiking again.
The tightening screw is more for securely mounting an action camera so it doesn't jiggle about when mounted.
The wider frame accommodates wider pack straps, something the older versions of the Peak Design once did. Once Peak started making their own packs, they trimmed down the width to fit their packs specifically.
Bonus: the design of the Utebit is based on the original design of the Peak Design capture clip version 1. The Peak used to have a tightening screw. When version 3 came out without it, they had to release a revised GoPro adapter kit to the plate could be tightened down.
I that exact camera clip (the Utebit) i brought it about six months ago, have never had any issues with it slipping or been worried about the secureness of my camera.
In regards to the size and it digging in, Ive personally never had that issue (but then I don't tend to go scaling up mountains or anything that extreme so perhaps that could be why)

I use the cheap clip which goes by another name here in Asia (but is the exact same) for mountain climbing. At first I was worried that I'd cheap out on the wrong end. However, I never had any trouble BUT as Mr. Popsys said the size might be uncomfortable in _some_ cases. TLDR: Get the cheap one if you don't drive a Lexus - it will do it's job!
Does yours also have some problem after some use such that is can be quite hard to get it in/out of the clip? I had the Utebit for a few years now and for the last year it has become a struggle to insert the clip unfortunately

@@delanyinspiron6400 it is certainly not getting any smoother for sure. It may seem really obvious but the first time i encountered this i realized that the security bolt kept blocking an easy sliding. The bolt seems to loosen while hiking and blocking the shoe from sliding in/out doing so.
Besides that yes it certainly isn't as smooth as the focus-ring on a Takumar but I think it's nothing that some fine tuning (sandpaper, oil?) couldn't solve. However, still very very usable here for my 1-2 10km hikes/climbing each month for 9 months now.
I own several PD products, including the clip' and I am always 100% happy with my purchase. The engineering and design plus it being a small company with creative individuals makes me feel like my purchase supports good people and products at the same time.
It is about time you posted a review before I purchase an item. Typically, I see your fantastic stuff after a purchase and wish I had only known earlier (that said, I love my tripod). Your vlogs have allowed me to really enjoy my photography. So a big thank you for your great work.
Thanks for sharing! Couple of comments, having used both cheap and v3 capture clip:
The old capture clip version had a tightening screw as well. Utterly useless. It made holstering the camera way harder. Getting rid of it was the right move going from v2 to v3. Similarly, the capture clip is far easier to holster without looking and is smoother to holster/unholster vs the cheap one.
The capture clip has smoother contours and the smaller profile are better regardless of your size because it wont dig into your body like the cheap one will.
You can’t tighten the mounting plate nearly as tight using the D-ring vs an allen key. My plate always came loose after a short while using a d-ring. I personally never had a need to remove the peak design plate. Just lock it down with an allen key and never think about it again! Also it’s much lower profile than the cheap one, so it is less obtrusive day to day.
The peak design one can also take the camera strap anchors without getting in the way of holstering the camera. Cheap one has loops to add anchors but they interfere with holstering.
All said and done, I emphatically say that the peak design one is well-worth the cost difference!

I bought the Peak Design clip and a cheap one of amazon too, after getting them both, I ended up sending the cheap one back, the PD clip is just so well made and easy to use. I even had my 6D with a 70-200 f2.8 IS clipped into it and wasn't worried at all about it falling, its a total game changer for walking around and taking shots. Makes for a good talking point too :) Awesome vid as always James! Thanks for keeping them coming!
Well done James. Great video, as usual. I have had the PD Capture for two years now and I love it. Twisting a back pack around to extract my camera from it is now a thing of the past and so grabbing a photo is much more spontaneous. It's not cheap but, as you say, it has changed how I take photos. Peak Design's camera straps are well designed, too. I can get my strap off my Sony in about three seconds. Amazed at their gear.
I bought a peak design clip after one of your first videos mentioning it in passing... Hands down it was the best photography purchase I have ever made. As a fellow clumsy guy, having the option to have my hands available used to mean keeping the camera in my bag and missing shots. I would even say that the majority of my favourite portfolio work was only captured because I had the camera available right then with the clip.... To me, when a product makes that big of a difference to me enjoying the process, I am absolutely more than happy to pay the extra to support a company that makes the best engineered version, and has team that I want to support! Overall a great recommendation James, and as with much of your advice, it has had an immense possible impact on my work, so big thanks!!
Entertaining as always! You give the relatable impression that you're figuring it out as you go. I love the PD clip...actually your video shooting JPEGs made me investigate the product, although I don't think you mentioned it as part of the video. I also have the PD wrist strap which compliments the capture clip nicely
I've been using the Peak Design Capture Clips since 2017 and also their Shoulder straps (I carry cross shoulder, lens down) with the Anchor Link connection system. I have 2 of the Capture Clips. One I keep on my backpack shoulder strap and the other I keep on a Peak Design PROpad which I use as a belt holster for non hiking belt carry. Peak Design has a really nice system with their capture and strap systems.

Pretty sure the utebit clip was engineered to be like the peak design capture v2. The v2 also has no lock, a bigger frame, a tightening screw, no rubber on the back attachment plate, and even has the same red quick release button!

Interestingly enough, you're holding the new Peak Design clip. Their first version had the same tension screw to help stop the wobble and they removed it in later versions.
I thought the same. My PD clip has a tensioning thumb screw and a big red release button.
The first version has also the howls and the tripod screw in the backplate. Both are gone with the seconed version. The last version is smaler and has the rubber.

After watching so many photographers on youtube that use the Peak Design clip, I thought I might wanna try one out. But, being a poor student I just tried to go on without such an expensive piece of metal.
After I spend time on the mountains of Scotland, and all the hassle that carrying my dslr gave to me when scrambling on the paths, I decided to check amazon as well (or eBay, can't remember which). I ended up ordering a cheapskate version from "Andoer" for a few bucks. And even thought that piece of metal and screws is not as refined as the Peak Design one, it has been integral part of my equipment for almost two years now. Made a huge difference to my photography trips, as I do not need to constantly be catious of where my camera is hanging, and still do have it on hand!
And I would think that Andoer is a lot smaller and lighter than Utebit, as I am not that wide of frame myself.
I concur James! I bought my PD Capture clip to use for coastal walks .
Good review and yes, the PD is great, I even noticed that others ask me about it when I use it and probably I convinced a lot of people to buy one. And here again, James, the ergonomics are important. My neck is hearting when using a strap for.

This is one of the best accessories I have bought along with the 3 legged thing L-Bracket that has the Peak Design plate attached. I tried a cheaper larger one and it fell off my bag (combination of thick straps and shorter screws) luckily I caught the camera. Phew. You can easily tell the quality difference between them.
Top video, so glad I found this channel. Funny story I ordered the UTABIT before watching this video and the seller cancelled the order because of some issue he had. I reluctantly decided to cough up a little bit more for the peak design. It is arriving tomorrow. After watching this video, I'm so happy that this happened.
The previous PD camera clip had a locking knob to keep the plate from rattling around. I do miss that in the v3, but the PD v2 was a bigger unit.

I also been using the PD capture clip for quite some time now, already bought a few more for all my camera bags (too much work to swap them over each time i change bags) and sometimes forgot it aswell. Its like having someone giving you an extra hand when you need your own hands, free . I use the lock every now and then, mostly as a safety feature against pickpockets or when climbing on rough terrain etc.
I love the Peak Design capture clip, like you, I have had mine and been using it for a couple years now and it really makes it so much easier to get at my camera when on the go with it. I have used the lock when in a large city like Toronto and setting my bag down for a minute to take a break from shooting. It is so secure on my bag, and I now have to change it over to my new backpack, the Nomatic Peter McKinnon Travel and Camera Backpack from my Lowepro Protactic 450. I also have the action camera version for my DJI Osmo Action which is great for getting footage with it on the go for B Roll. My plates lives on my Z6 and Z7 for when I want to interchange the cameras. I recently ordered the Peak Design Travel Tripod so this is a huge time saver as I can go straight from my camera clip and mount right on the tripod.

I also really love the PD clip, but one of the best things about it is that it uses an Arca Swiss plate. That may not be that useful to you because you don't use a tripod very often, but I use a tripod quite regularly and I can always leave the plate on. That is a huge time saver. About two years ago I bought something similar to the Utebit for about 10€ and, apart from it not being very smooth, I ended up not using it because the plate didn't fit on my tripod.

Hey James, I know I'm about a year late to this video but the play in the PD clip was intentional so that the camera can slide out "easier". They said it in one of their product videos on their channel. Thanks for producing these videos!
I've used a generic Amazon one for a couple of years now, it looks almost identical to the cheap Amazon one is this video.
I find that the combination of mounting it on a slight angle and the sternum strap on my backpack pulling the shoulder straps in a bit help reduce impact on the range of movement.
I also occasionally find myself using the screw to lock it down a bit more if I'm climbing up something or have to run a bit for example.
One bonus feature I like is the ability to take it straight off the shoulder and clip it straight into my tripod as the mount is compatible enough.
I was a Kickstarter supporter for that PD clip and the first version was bigger and dug into my shoulder and chest as well. Upgraded to the re-designed version when it came out and it is indeed the best accessory since the invention of the bread slicing machine.
I don't mind the Alan key thing as I haven't taken the plate off in years. I do keep an Alan key somewhere in my bag though...I think...
Haven't tried either system yet, but maybe. What I use that serves just about the same function is the Op/Tech Reporter System backkpack straps which are a set of short adjustable straps that connect to the shoulder straps of my back pack and the mounting lugs on the frame of my camera with Fastex-type buckles in between so you can either completely disconnect your camera or disconnect one side and let the camera tuck down by your elbow; which is the way I spend most of my time - *with my monopod attached to the camera the whole time.*
I have adjusted the straps such that the camera hangs down around my sternum, so it doesn't bounce around too much when I'm walking, but can raise the camera to eye level to take a picture in landscape orientation. For portrait orientation I have to disconnect the right strap. The camera stays connected to my body the whole time by at least one strap.
For extra security I added a home made safety lanyard made out of para-cord and a couple of clips on the left side of the camera just long enough that I can do most everything with the camera completely unclipped - *except drop it accidentally.* That adjustable lanyard connects to my shoulder strap with an S-biner so I can disconnect the whole thing and clip the camera to an Op/Tech shoulder strap or harness when I'm not wearing the backpack or its time to put the camera away. The only real inconvenience, and it hardly an inconvenience, is that the safety lanyard stays attached semi-permanently and dangles when not clipped in, but I could easily alter the rig so it stays fixed to the shoulder not the camera - I just find that way over all more convenient.
The whole arrangement is a bit 'belt and suspenders' - but you only get to drop your camera once.
Wife saw your opening comment and said “see, I’m not the only one spending loads of money on Amazon during lockdown...” I bought one of those clips on the original Kickstarter, pretty sure I didn’t pay much for it. It sat in a drawer for a long time until I found it, now it’s permanently on my backpack, I love it. Just gutted I can’t afford much else Peak Design make. Although in tidying my desk during lockdown I found a peak design plate to attach my GoPro to the clip that I bought about 2 years ago and have never used!
If the size bothers you, just set it diagonally to match the width of the backpack strap. It's worth noting that the button (red one in this case) is what you have to press for quick release. For a third of the cost, this is a no-brainer. Any other issue, just find some DIY way to solve it. I put a drop of multi use oil on mine to not have the cheap metal plate scraping as much when putting it back.
Now... let's talk about a strap placed on the belt. Can someone just make one that is cushoned on the inside so you don't end up with a red mark on your hip after a day walking around an event photographing?
I have used the Peak Design clip for 4 years and when the trip is backpacking and not specifically photography, I always use it. My camera has never fallen off is always available for quick access, I too love this clip.
For serious hiking, I use the Cotton Career CCS (g3 I think). Very similar idea - a bit more involved. but very sturdy, and I like that it puts the weight in my center of gravity, and handles large lens a bit better than the Peak Design clip (which I also love)
Always good to see market competition creating more products for a particular market segment. There are probably also inexpensive ones that are down around the same size/weight of your. I'd thought about buying one of those as well - I do have a cross-body strap - but don't really see a use case yet for what I _currently_ do. I just don't see it improving my setup at the moment.
The spring on the lesser-expensive one would be my concern and how quickly it'll wear out. Now being less expensive, replacing it if the spring wears down quickly is more an inconvenience on time than cost. But I'd expect the more-expensive one to have a far better spring in the retention mechanism.

I use the Peak Design Capture Clip for nearly 4 years now. Was expensive, but I never regretted it. My most important gear when I'm hiking or walking through cities and landscapes, handsfree and always ready for the next shot.
I got the peak design V3 and I absolutely LOVE IT! Build quality is phenomenal! I just recommend a backpack with longer straps so the camera won't bump into your chin.
Another useful comparison. I have the Utebit one, and although it is a little larger, and digs into shoulder just a little bit, I can live with it on the budget price. That little flash of red sure is pretty though!

I have the PD clip but I bought a belt flap thing with it - it allows me to clip the camera to my pants belt instead of my pack, which is on/off frequently. The belt clip flap is handy if you are just walking about with out your full pack. You just have to situate it on your belt so the lens does not interfere with your thigh movement. I hang mine on the side of my belt, over my pants pocket area. Very secure and out of the way.
I bought the capture clip a few months ago and I love it. It's so useful even can handle my big camera, I rarely use my strap these days (which is annoying because it wasnt cheap, also a peak design product)

Amazing timing, I was out on my bike today, as I often am, and I was just thinking how I needed something like this as I stop every 5 minutes to get my camera out my rucksack.

FYI: I just got my Peak Design clip this week. After I got it I watched a video made by Peak Design about the clip and they say that the movement between the plate and clip is actually intentional. The reason being that it allows for easier/quicker attachment and removing of the camera from the clip.
The utebit looks like the V2 of the Peak Design capture clip I have been using for a couple of years now. Was way bigger than the V3.
The one I keep using since many years is the SpiderLight Holster. I recommend you to check this one out as well, it's quite good!

The early versions of the Peak Design clip (like mine) have the screw and no rubber in the back plate. If you look at the back plate of the cheaper version (and the older PD version) there is a place to put the clip on a tripod. The screw is used to tighten the Arca Swiss plate to the clip to prevent movement while on the tripod.
The tightening screw is used to put a camera clip in your tripod and hace it stable without having to unscrew the clip itself from your camera. Basically go from your shoulder to your tripod without any hastle
I bought the peak design for megacon last year, as I already had a peak design wrist strap, but I needed a secure place to put my camera if I needed to carry something, eat, etc. I already had a decent camera strap, but I don’t like camera straps because they just let the camera swing around freely anyways. I settled on the Peak Design as my solution because it is fast, easy to use, and small. When I’m out shooting, my camera is never insecure. I clip the camera to my wrist strap before I take it out of the clip, then I clip it to my belt before I unclip it from the strap. This combination has saved me from a drop a handful of times already, while keeping my camera almost immediately accessible. The utebit is just way too big for something the I feel should be unobtrusive and quick to use. For now, the price to performance of the Peak Design can’t be beat, to me.
I know this comment is a bit late James but just watched this as I have an Utebit clip. I have been using it now for several months and never had an issue with it except fitting it to my shoulder strap, bit of a tight fit if it's chunky. I never use the tightening screw as the engineering ensures it doesn't rattle. The Arca Swiss mount means I can also mount it on my tripods with interchanging the tripod clips.

I’m using one from PD and I like it. Is very useful when you are cruising with camera around city and need a free hands for something.
I been using the Peak design to carry my camera for a while, being on crutches its been brilliant and massively helpful carrying my camera gear. like the small size although it's a little bit trickier to get your camera in then the previous version was 👍

I don't think I've ever spent so much time going down rabbit holes because of one TH-cam video. I learned a lot about quick-release mounting plates and tripod head compatibility.
FYI, for other viewers, this mounting plate fits directly into any Arca style quick-release. AND, it is possible to retrofit an Arca style quick-release onto many tripod heads that don't come with quick-release, or that come with a different style of quick-release.
I have the peak design one since last Sunday, did not know it locked... XD But it is a wonderfull product. Love it already. On the photography fair it was 20% off ^^.

I have the allen key that came with the capture attached to the zipper pull of my bag to avoid either losing or forgetting it since it has a nice ring to attach it to your keys or whatever you want to attach it to.

New viewer, and now subscriber. Great review. A lot of the other reviews I looked at didn't seem to answer a lot of the basic questions you would expect from a review. Like, is it comfortable? Is it convenient/well designed? Is it secure? That is, will the camera be in one piece when you get home or in a thousand pieces on an A road, at the bottom of a mountain or in the hands of a thief? Which yours did wonderfully, in a natural but humorous way. Good work
This is very close to the previous version for the Peak Design Capture (V2) which was wider and also had the screw lock system. This one I have and does allow you to screw it part of the way and once you've found the sweet spot it will stop the rattle and still release the camera with the button.
Would still choose the V3 (which you have) as it's more compact
So a few misc things after enjoying this video (please do more of these). First, the screw lock is something the early versions of the PeakDesign clip had, I think the small one is their third iteration at this point which is why they have been able to find better ways around it and at the same time make it smaller. As to your loss of allen keys, PeakDesign even puts key rings on them now, I keep one attached to my bags zipper pull. Again their earlier plates had the finger tab I think that was ditched for size too. Last bit, larger is still in the way for those of us who are larger, I've had other clips including the larger PeakDesign clips, the larger ones I could never use on my straps because of how it pushed into my shoulders limiting range of movement.
So really, while the PeakDesign does cost more, you are paying for a company that has been through a huge amount of engineering, testing, and improvements of the product vs. someone who latched onto an idea after the fact.
I couldn't justify the price of the PD clip so bought a very similar cheap one for less than a tenner. And I agree, totally changed how I take photos. My camera feels safer and more accessible. I generally hate camera straps so would often carry by hand, which whilst hiking is a risky one.
My only issue is with my decision not to get the PD based on price. I've spent close to £2k on the camera and lenses I'm carrying (a lot for some people, a tiny amount for others). Felt a bit stupid being concerned about spending an extra £50. But, the cheap clip has worked very well. I also remember the newer PD version possibly being too small to fit on my bag strap so that would have been a non-starter.
Interesting take and very late to reply but do you happen to remember what make/model it was you bought? I'm looking for a clip top but don't want to shell out almost £70 for a small bit of metal.
I really appreciate these videos- they save me from having to spend the money to test the items out!! I was just thinking about buying the cheaper one as well...

On the capture clip v2 you had this "lock screw" too. Iam using it more as a adjustment screw to fill the gap. So you can still slip it without having noise in the end.
I funded a Kickstarter that's made screws for the PD clip which don't require an alan key, worth looking into.
The one appeal the utebit had to me was the clamp width. As the current bag I'm using actually has a strap too wide for my PD to attach to.

I basically bought my Peak Design clip because of James using it and it's a game-changer.
It's cool that there's something more affordable available now but I'm going to let someone else test it out long term before I would consider trusting my camera with it, lol.
I have been usin my PD clip forna year now and never new ir had a locking feature! Probably will never use it but good to know, cheers!

I had the Utebit for a few years now and would just like to add a few things:
1.) The latch to screw it in with your fingers more often than not gets in the way when putting the clip in unfortunately, furthermore finger strength typically does not suffice to tighten the clip properly, which renders it cumbersome for me.
2.) It has become quite tricky and sometimes hard to insert the clip after some use, I don't know if this is due to wear of the equipment or what the exact issue is, but mine does not work as well anymore unfortunately
3.) The increased width is quite nice since I often wear it on my hiking backpack which has broad straps and I never had a problem with the width hindering movement.
I'll take a closer look at the peak design one, maybe this will work a bit better for my purpose
The clip is soooo useful. When I'm on a hike I can always grab my camera and be ready in seconds. If you have a good backpack and make all straps close then it doesn't swing. Only bad thing is that the weight is left centered the whole day when i carry it the whole day.
i bought a cheapy one after seeing your peak design one. its a padded material with velcro that wraps around your bag strap. its got a cool V shape fitting that even a kack handed ape like me can use with some degree of finesse. anyway, it sags down and you have to keep re-positioning it but it is a game changer.

The V2 from peak design (older) had the lock mechanism AND the screw to hold the plate thigt. But it didn't have the rubber on the lower plate, and the part that moves when pressing the release button in made of plastic.
By the way, used for more than 3 years doing trekking, canyoning and other activities, and never had a problem
Hi James, great episode.... very expensive to relatively cheap ;) I looked at the expensive one a couple of years ago, and couldn't really justify the outlay.... How ever, when I was to embark on a 10 week backpacking trip to Australia, I looked again and found a cheap version Andoer quick release. My thinking was, if not suitable I could jettison the quick whilst on the trip. It was very useful had my camera clipped on everyday, except when travelling. It now looks very "James Bond" and well scuffed...It also has the little turny knob to tighten, which i found no problem. Btw in Sydney at the seaside it was more "James Bondi "

Funny thing...I almost bought that same clip off amazon. The price is alluring, but in the end I saved some quid by getting a used PD system. It sure saved me a lot of fiddling when walking around the forest when on vacation with the family and the dog. I could handle the leash and quickly get camera released for impromptu shots.

I've seen cheap variants of the clip for quite some time now but never had enough trust in them to get one, while being to stingy to get the Peak Design one.
I might get the one you showed (forgot the name already), eventhough my shoulders are probably even smaler than yours...

Ah camera clips, I have a fomito one and absolutely love it ! I go hiking a lot, and after 2 years it's still (almost) mint.
Very nice and informative review. Unfortunately i already own a Peak Design Clip ;-)
