Just wanted to say, the only real reason to pay for a good camera is dynamic range. And imo its the thing that gives you not only a lot of flexibility but a muuuch better result and more pro-looking. Yet I do agree that glass is really important. Whats your opinion on that?
True John! Dynamic range is definitely important, although bracketing and fast glass to keep ISO down can usually help maximise a sensor's potential 🙂
@@JamesPopsysPhoto Very true but you cant always bracket, eg for a portrait, or street photography etc I think your work around could only be applied to landscape

The printer... printing your photos let’s you see them from reflected light rather than emanated light, which introduces the characteristics of the paper, such as whether it’s matte, high gloss, satin finish, pearlescent papers, etc. It’s also exciting to have made a real thing as opposed to a virtual thing. Digital images are great, printed photos are magical.

Totally agree, I don't do it enough. Nothing can beat a good quality print of your own hanging on the wall. Books are the next best thing, followed by a good picture frame.
The blue and orange lighting in the background of the last scene is extremely pleasing to the eye.

Alternative to the back pack plate is a good strap. I personally have the peak design camera strap and it makes all the difference since I hate carrying my camera in a bag. My purpose of a bag is to carry my 2 lenses, few filters, sd cards, spare batteries, couple of lights, speed light, gorilla pod, notpad, and other little stuff in the smallest possible footprint possible for my run and gun 24/7 photography life.
Love the peak design clip, so much so I actually bought two of the things, one to live permanently on the bag, and other can attach to my belt. Means 1) I can clip it to me and keep both hands free when messing around with the bag without putting camera down, and 2) simply going for a wander without the bag but not having to remove the one off the bag.
I just found you, enjoy you're sense of humor and your knowledge and the way you present it.

On the bag front I've suddenly become a huge fan of the bag inserts you can get. Turn my favourite backpack into a stealth camera bag. Generally they're pretty cheap to pick up and brilliant to try out, Amazon have a bunch.
Decide you don't like it, they make perfect lens cases for storage in the cupboard.
I discovered you fun, informative and excellent vlog here while researching a move from full frame Nikon to the G9. Thanks for all the help with that for sure. Loving your dry wit and self deprecating humor, keep up the great work Mr. Popsys!

I bought a dslr bag insert that fits in one of my hiking backpacks perfectly, finally gave me the photography backpack I was looking for.
this guy is actually really funny, so many of these kind o tutorials are boring but you made it really entertaining. Just subscribed!
James, i really enjoy you videos. i like that your videos got character (dont know if it makes sense) and that they are different from all those "cinematic B-roll" type of videos that have 120fps footage in them and that's all they have to offer. keep it up, mate!

I got the peak design clip when it was on Kickstarter like 6 years ago and it still holds up. Love that piece of equipment.
Love the camera clip idea...I’m always putting my camera away on vacations and such and pulling it out can be a hassle...may need to pick one of these up.
Well done, another great video. Good to know I'm not the only one who uses books for ideas, especially for regions I've never photographed before. Hope the shelves stay up another week. My son once used "No More Nails" to fix them on the wall. Only trouble being he had to hold them in place until it had dried and he could not get them down when he moved.

I actually got the inspiration to get the peak design plate/strap thing from your earlier videos and purchased one. Took it to London/Paris over the Christmas break and absolutely love it! Good to see it on your list

I actually purchased the Frii Design TriLens and clipped it to the opposite strap. Ive found it convenient for quick lens changes while on vacation.

I enjoy your entertaining style. Good glass is my splurge. Bought 2 great lenses over 10 years ago, and never regretted it. As far as camera bags go, I too have a collection! Now that I’m older & have back/hip issues I’ve actually gone to a floating frame backpack w padded packing cubes.
Capture Clip just arrived and now sits on my hiking/climbing rucksack.
I was forever looking for the perfect camera bag to carry camera, lenses, and all of the guff we take with us. But it also had to accommodate lunch, flask of hot coffee, extra layers, waterproofs, first aid kit, etc. Sometimes there are ropes, crampons, ice axes. The problem is that its a chore to remove rucksack and root around for camera equipment, so sometimes you keep going and wait for a better moment.
I have really great rucksacks for climbing and the simple addition of a Capture Clip has turned them into great rucksacks for photography whilst climbing. Its a no brainer, it will change your life.

I think you’re right about the more ‘disposable’ nature of screen content as opposed to printed (if that’s the right word).
When writing for the web you’re encouraged to keep your content much more succinct because people aren’t as comfortable reading on screens for long periods. 300 words is usually a sweet spot for things like blog articles, whereas pieces in magazines can have word counts into the thousands. I reckon it’s a similar thing with images, maybe we subconsciously give more gravitas to printed content rather than digital.

I had the 3 ft Ikea Lack shelf mounted with WallDog screws and it held up my 50ish CD collection and stereo for years. It was a bit droopy so when I rearranged the room, I found a different place for my CDs.
I'd say as long you installed the hidden bracket well, you're fine with a few more books.

One thing that's different between paper and a screen is that the colors on a screen can be quite inaccurate. Another reason is that you want to view it on a medium that is similar to the end product. A screen transmits light while a paper reflects it. Not to mention different lighting conditions etc.

I love my Peak Design capture clip and I paid less than fifty quid...smug grin :) but more importantly is buying disposable shower caps...£6 for 50 from Amazon to put over your camera when its sat in the clip and its chucking it down

Tip as an alternative for the Peak Design clip: have a look at the waist pouch “Camslinger outdoor”, meanwhile version 2. You can carry it even with the waist belt of your backpack. Unfortunately the price is higher but I can recommend it without any restrictions!!
James... thank you for the bag recommendation. I currently have the Peak Design 30L backpack. I know it’s my fault, but I’ve more than once dropped equipment out of the Peak Design because I thought both sides were zipped when only one side was closed. I guess the Peak Design is not right for a scatterbrain like me!
Completely agree on the "invest in lens" thing. I've got a Canon 17-55 2.8 that I've had at least 12 years, meanwhile I've gone through a 300D, 400D, 50D and 70D. Plus it works on my M5 with an adapter.
I have the Lowepro backpack and absolutely love it!!!

You left out one, I'd put ahead of bags: travel. I steal this tip from Thomas Heaton, that travel to new and exciting places will do more for your photography (especially if you're into landscapes) than new kit will.

I would choose travel (fresh eyes!) over buying new gear any day.
@@disarmsox yup agreed. I needed new tripod as nearly lost stuff due to old one being light and flimsy. Want new vlog stuff but don't need it, stuff I've got done the job and the cost of that I could go a cool trip.

i could not agree more about the pro capture clip. It completely changed how i can carry a landscape camera on my chest and then i can carry a real hiking pack on my back with more camera and hiking gear. It holds a canon 6d with 24-105L and also i have carried a 6D with a 70-300L . N problem unbelievable great addition and I keep the clip at all times on my pack. would love a second plate if i could get one. Get the heavier one for a few bucks more and buy it American.

1:38 Agreed. It's just so nice being able to not dick around getting the camera out of a bag. I hang my long lens off the other strap and almost never need to dig around to shoot.

@@JamesPopsysPhoto Absolutely. I had found myself skipping shots if they weren't "epic" enough because of the PIA factor. Now I look for little details to shoot while hiking along which just makes the whole process less serious and more fun.

9:45 The purpose of the waiststrap is to allow you to access gear without removing the backpack. So the strap is clipped loosely, you can take the backpack off of your shoulders, turn it over to your front, and open the back (which you will be looking at, if that makes sense) and get what you want, zip it up and wear it the right way again ... basically, use it without ever taking it off and placing it on the ground. Plus it probably also has pockets for filters or SD cards. My Neewer backpack does. Its straps are horrible but it only cost me $80! :)
I've been using the F-Stop camera rucksack for the past 3 years and found it to be a good all round day sack, large enough to carry my camera equipment and enough gear needed for a full day out o the hills.
Also I would recommend learning how to use a map and compass correctly as electronic navigation aids are only as good as the battery life in them.

On the subject of print vs screen, The big difference is that one is subtractive and the other additive. A three colour (RGB) vs a four colour (CMYK) model.
Screen gets black by removing colour (light) print by adding colour (ink). Printing can soften (or muddy) the image as the dark areas can fill in because of ink spread and the effect of printing multiple colours on top of each other. Even a slight misalignment can seriously affect the outcome. I have spent most of my career in magazine production and am keenly aware of the limitations of print. I guess the best way to judge an image is to see it the way it will be viewed by the paying customer.

I'm just a hobbyist photographer but I like printing because I can see how the photo looks without the backlight of the LCD screen.

Consider this... Most today's screens are 1920x1080, which equates to around 2 Mpx. You basically throw away over 16 Mpx worth of data when viewing your photos on screen, and that's even BEFORE you throw in vertical black bars when viewing photos on a 16:9 monitor. That's why prints are almost always sharper than displayed photos.
Love your videos James and always look forward to the next. Like you I am searching for the right bag. I do not do travel, sadly, however, one still needs a good bag, one that allows easy access to all equipment (including filters). And the hunt continues :)

I would have said RAW processing software instead of printer. You can out source your printing very easily and you can get around 50 40x30cm prints for the price of a good printer. You add the cost of the ink on top of that and your walls will be filled with photos before the printer would have "paid it self back". And those normal photo printers can do only up to A3 size, which is still quite small so you would have to have bigger prints made in somewhere else anyway.
I agree that printing is important though. I feel that photographic process is not complete for an image until it's printed.

have you heard about 5.11 bags ? I have the RUSH72 wich is not photo bag but I've put a Tenba insert in it and I'm loving this set up so much !
Have a look at the Vanguard Alta Sky backpacks, that is the latest erm bag in my collection. It could do with a way to 'store' the waist straps but apart from that its working well for me at present.
Print is amazing there is something that makes it official holding your own photos in your hand, you can hold it on the phone but a physical photo is the way we grew up viewing them same thing if your work is published in books.

I have just bought the G9 😃 and can’t wait to use it properly (still working out the settings). I’m looking at getting 1 good lens, what would you suggest. I take photos as a hobbyist and photograph street, city scape and trying portrait. I love prime lenses and have a few for my E5 Mkii. Not a lover of landscape, but love your videos and humour. You should look into ski bags too, they quite often have a back entry to get to your stuff quickly then you just need to add camera compartments, f-stop I think do some good ones.. that way you could also use it as an every day bag too
Great advice as always James. I want to add that after wasting quite a lot of money on camera leashes & straps I have found the Peak Design clip on/off system is the perfect solution, so quick to change between bodies etc, wish I'd jumped in long ago. Cheers :-)

That shoulder camera holder is really the best thing you can add to your camera. I got mine for around $10 on AliExpress! Just check if all is screwed tight regularly 😉

I returned my peak design clip. It was sketchy putting it on at times. I think it would be great for wedding photography for hooking it up to a belt.

Must agree I like my peak design clip as well although with a battery grip installed and a small lens attached it does rotate forward as lot. It stops all that pressure on my neck and still keep the camera handy. Bags are a hassle as a shoulder injury means I can no longer wear a backpack except for a short time. So have switched to a Thule messenger bag which I used over the weekend and it was very comfy although tricky to pack efficiently. Printing is nice but I only have so much wall space. Glass keeping it simple so far with an 18-135 STM and a Sigma 50mm f1.4 and the nifty 50mm f1.8. I do have a couple of yongnuo strobes and they are fun to play with for macro and portrait photography. Tripod useful for those but rarely taken out of the house.
I love your new 'shared' Studio (Emily will still use it i'm sure!). May i ask you a completely unrelated question? when you shoot your video (i mainly use my m43 camera for video) what ISO do you have your camera at? i've only just started going manual ISO (as i was getting annoyed at the changes in overall frame brightness when the subject moves) and i'm still getting grainy images. Also for the shots to camera in your studio, are you using a prime? my pany leica 12-60 is great but i wonder if it's too slow for my current lighting set up (or maybe i need more lights?). On the subject of prints vs screen, i think it is the other way round. I think on a screen all that matters is the image and the screen is so clear that its easy to get bogged into unnecessary details. Paper brings in limitations and opportunities depending on how the image interacts with the papers traits (like grain, texture, gloss etc). The traits of the paper can make or break an image. Easy to make a great looking photo on a screen, but the really outstanding results come from a great image on the right paper, and when you’re considering both things together there is so much more going on and the image itself can be allowed to take a back seat... if that makes any sense at all.

About the lenses thing... I cannot agree more. When I moved from my dad's old dslr (nikon d70) to my sonya6400 it was a big difference, but it was nothing when compared to the difference from moving from my dad's old cannon 75-300 (from the 90s) to a nice new sigma 150-600. (I do bird photography.)

I recently picked up an Atlas Athlete camera backpack. Pricey, but it really is a good bag. The best I’ve owned yet and the waist strap is detachable.
