In military basic training, it's taught as "Treat, Never, Keep, Keep". Treat your weapon as if it were loaded. Never point your weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire. Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.

    Amendment to rule 1:
If someone offers you a firearm to inspect, with a closed action, and you don’t know how to open the action, don’t touch it until you do! Ask how!
Zero tolerance for shooting accidents. “ I didn’t know it was loaded” is no excuse for a potentially deadly mishap.

Exactly - These four rules were drilled into me from the first time my Dad let me fire his shotgun. The gun is always loaded, don't point at anything you aren't about to shoot, finger off the trigger until ready, what's behind the target. I grew up shooting, but shooting safely, and it's a hobby/sport I love, and if I say so, one I'm good at.

      Rule number 6:
There is no rule number 5, or 6, because all guns are always assumed real and dangerous - otherwise the 4 Jeff Cooper rules wouldn't exist.
Besides. Why do you wear eye protection in airsoft games? Because it's "not dangerous" ?!
Why are some robbers successful with fake, or even unloaded firearms? Because people always assume they are real, if they look like the real thing. In the heat of the moment you can't tell anyway.
Why do toy guns have an "age restriction" on them? (3-9 Years, that sorta thing) Because children can put them in their yap shaft.

When I was around 8 years old in the late 60s, I went down the hall to my friend’s apartment to say hi. He was maybe a year or two older. His brother was a NYC police officer. They lived with their parents in a two bedroom apartment and so both brothers shared the same bedroom. My buddy was lying in his bed watching a painter paint a wall. His brother, the cop, was standing at the bedroom doorway with his hands up on a pull-up bar watching and talking to the painter. I walked in, saw a small silver pistol on the desk, no holster. It looked exactly like a type of cigar lighter they sold in a store my sister took me to often. Thinking it was a lighter, I picked it up and pointed it at my friend. Thankfully his brother was super fast and grabbed it out of my hand.

IF you hear of someone shot (accidentally), you have an extremely high probability of finding one or more of these four rules broken.

Good and simple intro but have to agree that #4 should not just say be sure the target is clear. As we were taught in the Army plus in all NRA and other courses, the weapon must be pointed down range and in a safe direction at all times. Several times I've seen people at ranges turn around with a loaded firearm, In the Army the D.I. would knock you up the side of the head for this, seen it happen!

Yes, the first thing you must always pay close attention to before even thinking about handling a firearm is safety. This is the first lesson I teach to all my handgun self-defense students.
There are 4 major rules of firearm safety that must always be observed. Religiously follow these rules at all times and you'll most likely never experience an accidental discharge.
    1. Always treat all guns at all times like they were loaded.
    2. Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
    4. Be sure of your target and what is behind and around it.

Safety 1st, Last & always including cleaning of said firearms My routine when cleaning is any ammo is lock away from cleaning bench next, I like peace and quiet when cleaning so I try to do my cleaning when I will not be disturbed. When using my bore snake, I like to run it though the same way as bullet travels Why? because it gets a person used to the idea never point a gun at anything including yourself. Sooner later a person will want to look down a barrel & that why I do it. I know this might sound a little picky but again all it will take is a lapse of memory that could be fatal. Once I cleaned my guns & check to make sure they are working. I place chamber flag in gun. & Place it in my gun safe. If a person not already taken a safety class, then it well worth time & money

If you don't know and practice these basic safety firearm rules, you definitely should, which saves lives.

  • @thetexasrat
    @thetexasrat ปีที่แล้ว

    Rules should be as follows:
    1) Always treat every gun as if it is loaded (even when you know it isn't)!
a] Always keep firearms pointed in a safe direction*/never pointing a firearm at anything/anyone you are not willing to kill/destroy.
b] Always keep your finger off the trigger until target is acquired and you are ready to shoot (even when dry firing).
c] Always know your target and what is behind it.
    2) If you are going to play with or dry fire your gun be sure it is unload first(and visually inspect to be sure), and keep in mind that all of the above rules still apply 100% of the time!
    3) All guns, not in use or on standby** (e.g. - defense weapons at the ready), should be kept unloaded, keeping in mind Rule 1) a-c] still applies 100% of the time, no matter what!
    Footnotes:
*1) a] - at gun ranges the only safe direction is down range.
**3) It is very important that all firearms at gun ranges on stand-by should still be kept unloaded and pointed down range.

Here, let me fix the firearms safety.
    Rule #1
Always treat the gun as it's loaded and have your fingers off the trigger unless ready to be deployed.
    Rule #2
Remove the source of feed _(magazine)_ and pull back the rack to get rid of the round in the chamber, always check the three angles
*_(Chamber, down below, and casing catcher.)_*
*(And never stick your finger in like the dummy in this video.)*
    Rule #3
When ready to deploy, inject the source of feed and aim at a target that you're willing to eliminate or practice.
    Rule #4
When holstered, make sure that there is no rounds in the chamber unless if you have a death wish, other than that, good luck.

    • @redwall1521
      @redwall1521 2 ปีที่แล้ว

"That dummy" isn't the only one who does it, it's a common practice for people who want to ensure the barrel is clear before even taking the glock apart to clean it. So......your sense of entitlement about what NEEDS to be the rules, eh.....it's not a good look, buddy

  • @matthewsmith5605
    @matthewsmith5605 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I cannot underscore how important these rules are... and how often they are ignored. I recently visited a local gun store, where a certified armor of a major gun brand said he could show me a “better” way to disassemble my pistol, and the first thing he did was cup his palm over the muzzle! After he put it back together, he aimed it at his arm again! I told him that was unsafe, and that a military or civilian range would have him removed for doing that, and he told me to go to hell. He was reckless and negligent.

The state does that: I need a license to demonstrate I know how to drive a car before I can legally drive it off the lot. The car also has to be fully registered. Why can’t we require the same level of scrutiny with guns?

I disagree, it's not a "little rendition." It's true and is always the first rule of safety whether you shoot or are a 10 year old kid seeing a gun somewhere. "It's loaded." Presuming a firearm is loaded will never get someone killed.
Working with the presumption that the arms seller does their job (another discussion) and explained the function of the weapon and rules of safety, there comes a point where personal responsibility comes into play. This is a brief video which operates a premise that it isn't needed to, in this individual video, explain in syllables all of the nuances of buying, owning and operating a weapon.
The four rules work. Practicing commonsense safety works.
Using your brain for other than a whistle stop and employing some personal responsibility has something to do with it, as well.

@@MtnBadger Shane failed to remove the magazine. He inspected an empty chamber, released the slide and potentially rechambered a round and at 1:05 he pulled the trigger on what could have been a live round. Is that how you think it’s done, cowboy? Were Shane’s sights on a target when his finger was on the trigger? Was the firearm pointed at something he wanted to destroy? Ermy’s foot? The daycare center downstairs? “All firearms are loaded” doesn’t mean unload the firearm. It sure as hell doesn’t mean pull the trigger to prove it’s not loaded. Use your noggin for something besides a whistlestop.

My point, in reference to your comment, is the premise of the rule is correct. All guns are loaded. I also said that common sense has to prevail. I'll acquiesce to his mistake but being condescending and calling people names like a perpetual 10th grader isn't going to make your point.
I said the four rules are sound and use your brain. Especially if someone else makes a mistake... Glean the good points and beware the rest. If you can't do that, you belong on the rubber gun squad, anyway.
The "gotcha" mentality and need to insult everyone, rather than point out a mistake for people to realize what they should avoid, is your problem. Not mine.

There are mistakes in this rendition. Rule One. The gun is always loaded, doesn't matter if you verified that it was not. Say I want to put the pistol in it's case and leave the range. Yes, I would verify it was empty, and then carrying it to the car, and even how I store it in the car will all be done with the assumption it is loaded. Guns are always loaded.
Mistake in two is "aim" (even point is not good) vs the correct term which is "cover". A lot of accidents happen when someone has a gun that they are not pointing or aiming at someone, but is aligned with someone. Say they have the gun in cradle carry, and then move by you and for an instant you are looking right down the barrel of the gun. Not good. They did not actively aim or point the gun at you, but it covered you.
Three is a little too specific "Sights are lined up on the target", what if they aren't. With pistols at short range you can be able to cause bodily harm without the sights being lined up: what if the gun doesn't have sights, or uses a red dot, or is just being pointed, or is in contact with the other's body. The original is better though it has some of the same problems. over-specifying doesn't help.
Four is wrong because they leave out the part about being sure of the target, that is huge. Does state it in the recap.
The original rules are perfect, why is it every time someone talks about them they invent their own gumbo.

rule 4 is not, know whats behind your target
rule 4 is, Keep your Weapon on Safe until you intend to fire.
not to knock Gunny or Glock but it should be an unofficial rule or the unspoken 5th rule because walking around with a weapon off safe is asking for trouble I.e. Dropping the weapon, tripping and falling with the weapon the safety is there to keep the pin from striking the primer on the bullet. hence why we do Safety Checks But What do I know I'm Just a Marine Veteran who as a POG who only was assigned to Infantry units

I was also taught the "Treat, Never, Keep, Keep" ditty that you're talking about. I think the reason he didn't include the last part regarding the safety is because Glocks have an automatic safety built into the trigger, making the last two "keeps" redundant. I found it weird he didn't mention it too, didn't sound right.

Nothing about where not to leave or store your gun. Why a purse with a gun holster built in is a bad idea. Many cops will tell someone to leave their gun locked in their car if they don't want that someone to carry in public or in restricted places, why having that gun on you is safer than leaving it in your car. Why a big gun safe is a good idea, one not easy to pick up and move. Even a cheap large gun safe shows one made the effort, like in court to a jury. And lastly why I am doing this search on gun classes. I want to show a jury that I made the effort. Even if I don't need the class, I do need proof that I took and passed the class.
