  • It's been nearly two years since I fished my beloved River Trent in Nottinghamshire... An iconic fishing venue that I first journeyed to from Sheffield, with my granddad, before going on to hone my skills on the mighty waterway with the city's junior match angling squad.
Over the years I've loved fishing many methods and baits on the Trent, such as stick float with hemp and casters, or a groundbait feeder, and catching everything from roach, dace and chub, to bream, eels and perch.
One species of fish I wasn't used to catching from the Trent were PIKE - the freshwater crocodile as us coarse anglers sometimes refer to them - but this summer trip saw me land yet another PB, following an epic battle on light trotting gear! And it turned out to be one of several river monsters to test my nerves...
In this video I visit a stunning day ticket stretch of the River Trent near Hoverhingham, run by Midland Angling Society. The sun shone and the fish were biting in numbers, so join me for this extended trip down memory lane.
    Sit back, relax and enjoy.

Great video. I grew up fishing the Trent from Clifton to Newark as a kid and then moved to Canada at 21. Your video brought back some great memories catching Barbel & Chubb at Clifton Grove. Thanks 🇬🇧🇨🇦..

Ah that’s great hear! I’ve been to Canada a few times (mostly work in Toronto but also lucky enough to have done the Vancouver to Calgary drive more recently) and I know you have some TRULY MIGHTY rivers there! Once fished the Beaver out of Toronto for steelhead. But the Trent is also special and it sounds like your youth was just as inextricably linked with it as mine. I’m not trying to flog you anything but you might enjoy my book, The Magic of Fishing, if you’ve not come across it - 2-3 chapters about club matches on various stretches. I had plenty of good chub around Newark (just above the main bridge into town and chucking a feeder right across), but never did manage to land any barbel as a lad. No doubt hooked a few as I mention in the vid, and it was always an experience to leave my legs like jelly. Just didn’t have the gear as a young lad.

Love the passion. I too grew up in Sheffield and fished the club matches on the Trent, Witham, Middle level, Sibsey trader, Fourty Foot, etc etc. The happiest days of my life. Now its all hook a duck fishing on commercials, you could put a wellington boot on and catch Carp. Not Angling for me. Thanks for the video.

Ahhhh, we are cut from the same cloth then! I do love driving back up to the Steel City for a few summer matches with my old club (always commercials these days of course) but, yep, I pine for the days when we’d file off the coach for breakfast in one of the old pubs, then unload all our gear in a field and trek off to find our peg, where you often wouldn’t see another human being all day. Those memories haunt me and if you’ve not come across it already, you might enjoy my book The Magic of Fishing, which is all about growing up in Sheffield and fishing with my granddad. Thanks for watching and a great comment 💙🙏😎🎣
P.S. We used to fish the Witham too! Pie and pea supper in a pub afterwards… 🍻

Great to watch ! I grew up in caythorpe and fished after the matchs if I could scrounge their throw away baits. School kid as I was then. Every peg every weekend fully taken and bus's filling car parks. And also remember a dead cow , a bag of drowned puppy's, and the odd person. But a great place to grow up. Even watched ivan Mark's fishing. Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant comment thanks ☺️🙏 I once fished against Ivan Marks’ son on a winter canal match for the juniors but I was never lucky enough to watch the great man fishing. I always wanted to stay and fish after the matches too! I remember when it was always busy - I’d feel nervous on the way there, with my granddad, because sometimes we couldn’t get two pegs together and had to keep trying different stretches.

Still an exceptional river is the mighty Trent. Takes me back to my match fishing days, fishing the Nationals on that river. Nice mixed bag of healthy looking fish, but my tip to you is, next time you’re Pike fishing use a stronger hook length than 2.6lbs!😏🤣🤣 As we get older, nostalgia becomes a big part of our lives, & this (along with many of you great videos) certainly brought that feeling to me. As always John, Great video & Thank You for the time & effort you put in to bring it to us. 👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻🎣

Cheers Kenny - it’s a pleasure when I get comments like this. Aye, I need to remember my forceps next time, too! You fished nationals did you?? You must have some skills then. I have fond memories of fishing one on the Nene with Sheffield juniors but I had a bad draw (don’t we always 😂) and despite some top young talent we didn’t manage to frame. We used to practise on the Trent at Burton Joyce and it was my first real taste of big river fishing beyond my boyhood trips with my granddad. I remember I’d never bought more than a pint of mixed maggots and suddenly I was being asked to find enough paper round money for a gallon of bronze! 🤯

@@themagicoffishingHi John, sorry for late response but for some reason I’ve only just received this reply??🤔 I really used to enjoy fishing the Nationals, not that I was that good, best I did was 1 section win, but that was on the Shropshire Union canal with low weights & scraped the section win by mere ounces! Never fished the junior nationals myself only the seniors, but great experience & really enjoyable times/memories. 👍🏻🎣

Great video John. this is the second one i have viewed and thoroughly enjoyed it. Again as yesterday comments i used to fish nearly opposite to where you were. with a small village club called Greyhound angling club from Aslockton. We used to fish at Kneeton. I remember when the organiser couldn't get a tractor and trailer to take our tackle down to the river it was a massive walk, ok going down with the anticipation of a great days fishing but coming back up the hill through the woods was a killer. i still remember peg 4 was full of chub on the stick running to a large reed bed on the old bronze maggot or even better on the grub. Anyway because of your videos i have just bought your book and look forward to reading in a couple of weeks time when i receive it in Tbilisi Georgia. Again thanks for your videos keep them coming especially the Nottinghamshire ones.

I’m definitely keen to do more Trent videos although I’m not sure I will get chance until next summer now. Maybe, but I tend to go when I’m on the way back from a match up north, and my fifth and final round trip is coming up this weekend (when I can’t get a day off work)… It’s a long drive otherwise, but worth it, I know! There are a couple of chapters on the Trent (and matches like you describe) in the book, which will hopefully keep you going. I don’t know the names Kneeton or Aslockton, which surprises me?! Are you really in Georgia then?? Hope the post works as you say… 🤞 And I hope you enjoy some of the other videos on the channel even if they’re not on the Trent 👍🎣🐟

First trip to Georgia was in 1998 for a project. then came back in 2017 for the same client on another project now i am back again for the same client again keeping me busy. fishing wise i fish for a team called feeder lab which is all Georgian guys and me. was also fortunate enough to fish for the Georgian national feeder team in Serbia 2023 which was a fantastic experience as you can imagine.. fishing is good over here big natural lakes and reservoirs. main fish are carassio. few bream roach carp grass carp perch and the biggest bleak you have ever seen. As a fellow Trent lover, you might want to look out for the result of this trip in a few weeks… I also remember when there used to be a lot of chub in the river around Hoveringham and Caythorpe, and it’s fascinating how fish stocks change over the years. 6:46 anyone else noticed how nearly all flowers have little to no flying insects these days... there's a lot of data from across Europe that are showing a 60% decline in flying insects but it feels like more than that when I'm out and about. Used to drive the car on a 3 or 4 hour trip and it would be covered in lacewings, beetles, flys, bees etc. But now the cars are almost clean bar dust!

I've fished many venues on the Trent from Stoke Bardolph to Collingham/ Besthorpe, and had many great matches, from the 1970's up to present day, had some cracking days on stick float, caster & hemp, sometimes tares, never ever used to see a pike, now days just when you get a nice shoal in your swim the pike turn up, and the roach, dace, chub etc just disappear and you have to start building the swim again, and one of the places where pike ALWAYS turn up is this road stretch between Caythorpe & Hoveringham, yes it is comfortable cheap fishing with easy parking at most pegs, but the pike have somewhat spoiled the Trent for me, and i rarely fish it anymore.

Hello ‘Devil Dave’! Lovely comment ta ☺️ Yes, you’ve referenced some of my other old haunts there - Stoke Bardolph and Collingham! I could chuck in the Embankment in Nottingham, Holme Pierrepoint, Sawley, Long Eaton, Marnham, Caythorpe… All these names put a smile on my face even though I’m not able to fish them regularly like I used to do. In fact I’m thinking of trying to get back on the river again this summer and - day ticket wise - I’m wondering about Fiskerton or the A1 Pits stretch. Believe both do some barbel and chub (which I’d love to get amongst again) although Fiskerton is a bit of an epic walk for non-members. If you have any recent experience of either or a better option to suggest on a day ticket please do comment again 🙏💙🎣 Either way, many thanks for commenting and I hope you might enjoy some of the other videos on the channel. Cheers for now.

I used to fish the Trent at Sawley, just below where the Derwent joins it in the late 50's, early 60's. It was owned by the Pride of Derby then, used to get magnificent roach, trotting with a centre pin reel and 3lb line. 😊

Sawley! Now that brings back some happy memories for me as well 😀🎣🐟 I was too young, at about 9 or 10 years old, to understand who owned it back then, but my granddad and his friend, John Swift, who was the secretary of the little club we belonged to, just outside of Sheffield, used to take me there once a year and it was like heaven. We always parked at a pub called the Harrington Arms and then walked over a field or two to reach a little concrete platform that ran down the side of the river. I caught my first proper chub there but was happy catching bleak or anything that would bite - much like I am these days! Very, very happy memories and I even got to fish there once with my best mate, Ben, who I talk about in my book, The Magic of Fishing. I can still picture us hauling our wicker baskets over a stile… That would have been in the early to mid eighties. I think I looked into whether I could get back on there with a day ticket a few years back and called the pub, but they said they no longer had any say on the fishing and didn’t know who ran it. If you have any intel feel free to comment again 😄 Thanks for watching and commenting - welcome back on the channel anytime 🙏🎣💙🐟👍🍻

Cheers, Mark! 💙 I still wonder how the hell that hooklength didn’t part, especially when the biggie was thrashing on the surface and then bolting off into the considerable current for the umpteenth time! I have actually sent an email to Middy, with a link to the vid, saying they might appreciate the little tribute I gave their Lo-Viz product! 😄 And I only had it to hand because I decided to take my match seat box to the river - usually use it fishing the pole on commercials. That and Reflo Power Line are my go-to hooklength lines. But, yeah, I actually thought of you and your daughter while fishing and filming - hoping it might inspire you to give it a go when making a visit. One thing I forgot to mention in the vid was you can park right behind a few of the pegs there too, and it really is convenient. Probably gets a lot busier at weekends (in summer), but I had my pick of pegs and didn’t even get there til about 11am.

Them 2 pike would've been more than welcome in a match back in the day!!. I remember going on matches with my Dad when I was about 15 on the Trent, Winthorpe, Gunthorpe, Long Higgin....used to get a lot of big Gudgeon and the odd decent Bream or Chub then mainly.
The matches were either run by the Jervis Lum pub on Norfolk Park or the Matilda on Matilda street, my Dad was a member of both clubs.
I remember the fur and feather matches, later on in the year being cold and a bit miserable...mainly just huddled up on my basket waiting for the hooter to call an end to it! Happy days though and the summer matches when we had proper summers, seem like distant blissful memories now.
One bloke, a real character, walked upstream and swam down past every peg asking everybody if they'd "caught owt" 😂 then got out at the end in his y-fronts with his big beer belly....good days, good people, good fishing!!!!!!

Managed to catch a couple around that weight but also 3 signal crayfish! Thanks for a great comment 🙏💙 Crayfish eh?! I hate the buggers! Well, at least I hate the invasive signal ones from the US. They really can take over a water as you say and although some fish might get fat on them (perch, chub and big carp), they can mess up the fishing for sure. I’ve found the only way past them is to use baits that aren’t fishy or meaty, like bread or sweetcorn, but they can still wreak havoc. Hi Chris. Yes, that stretch is run by Midland Angling Society with tickets available on the bank when one of the friendly bailiffs comes by. See this webpage - www.midlandanglingsociety.com/water-details/. You can park right behind about 10-15 of the pegs on the Hoveringham stretch (with many more available with a walk). It gets a bit busy in warm weather at weekends but generally quiet during the week in my experience over the years. The other stretch you can fish with parking behind all the pegs is the famous Burton Joyce Road Stretch down from the Ferry Inn. That’s Ashfield Angling and I think it’s about £6 on the bank (I might try to get there this summer). Just don’t try at weekends without checking in the summer, as they have a lot of matches on there including the big Riverfest final.
