  • A lovely autumn session on the River Trent fishing for Barbel with a friend, where we discovered a small bait change made a big difference.

    Great watch. Love that stretch, caught my first Trent Barbel from there. I still have the odd trip up at Fiskerton. 😊

    Hi Nick, That was me next door. Glad to see you carried on catching after I left. I have returned once since this and had a couple of really decent Chub. Will be back this week with some maggots!

    Great video sir and I will certainly be looking out for more. Just about to start filming my own fishing on the Thames and six fish a season will be more like it.

    Lovely video again Nick. The Trent is my next target following the many outings on The Wye. Good to see that similar tactics work and that ringing the bait changes does too. Nice also that there is always the chance of a big one! Was this a day ticket stretch?

      Thanks as always. Glad you enjoyed it. Yes it's day ticket.

    There is a similar trend on most of our Barbel rivers. It could be that the Wye is behind the Dorset Stour and Hants Avon but will ultimately end up the same. Both of these rivers were once a Barbel mecca but are now principally Chub fisheries with a few Barbel. Why this is, no-one has any answers. Poor recruitment is the likely cause. This is probably due to poor spawning success. As numbers dwindle so successful spawning becomes less likely and as the adult fish die off so the gene pool becomes smaller, further lessening the chance of success. Pollution, predation by cormorants of the young fish, bad weather at spawning time....the list goes on. Chub appear to be coping better with today's rivers and are filling the gap left by the disappearing Barbel. Chub are spawn eaters and may be feeding on the Barbel spawn. Personally I am not optimistic. Even the Trent may flow. The upper Trent 20 years ago had good Barbel stocks. Now they are rare. I could go on about rivers where the Barbel stocks have declined dramatically. Here's a few: Bristol Avon, Kennet, Great Ouse, London, There'll.....you get the idea! The situation on the Wye is in no way unique!

    Hi Nick, was this Barnsley’s fiskerton stretch? Also are you from oundle? Sure I’ve seen you fishing the nene before.

      Hi George. I think it was Barnsley's stretch yes. You get the ticket from the local shop. And yes, I live in Oundle! Small world. Are you local also?

      @ nassington, now Peterborough for me! Been trying for the ever elusive nene barbel for a while and have transitioned to the Trent as it’s close but not tried Fiskerton yet it’s next on the list, went to Collingham on Sunday and had 1 bite last second of the day 12lb12oz barbel!

      Nice! I'm also trying to catch a Nene Barbel... They're in there but no luck yet. Hope to see you on the bank.

    Three rods on a river, ridiculous .

      We had two each, which is allowed on that stretch. I normally fish one.

    Really necessary to have bite indicators on disturbing the countryside peace ?

    • @WildlifeAndFishing
      @WildlifeAndFishing  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Honestly - probably not. As you'll see we missed a few bites because we weren't watching the rods. They were quietly set though. Thanks for your comment Wayne.
