Last cast drama! Barbel fishing with rolling meat

  • It's one of the oldest fishing techniques in the world - a rod, some line with a hook on the end, and a big old bait like luncheon meat - but how often do we fish like this in the modern era of boilies, pellets and bite alarms, or carbon poles, heavy seatboxes and barrows? I know I'm guilty of overlooking one of the most simple yet deadly approaches for catching big river fish like barbel and chub...
    So I decided to put that right with a short evening trip to my local River Wey, near Woking in Surrey, taking a roving approach to try and catch a barbel or chub from one of the many likely looking and often snaggy swims. It turned out to be a magical couple of hours by the river and, after immersing myself in nature, I couldn't have predicted the dramatic ending this barbel session had in store for me!
    As always, sit back, (try) to relax, and enjoy!

      Cheers Paul! They don’t half pull do they?! I’ve only started trying for and catching barbel in the last 4-5 year and every single one blows my mind, from the smallest example I had on the opening day of the season (a baby of a few ounces), to the better fish I’ve managed since. Talking of PBs, please look out for the new couple of vids from TMOF, as I recently enjoyed a phenomenal three-day trip the tidal Trent! Let’s just say some personal bests (plural!) got beaten 🤯🤩🎣🐟😊

    Some days the Fishing gods are with us and make those days extra special!! I've just finished your book and for anyone else who hasn't read John's book, I seriously urge you to get it for an incredible read.. So many moments in the book that I could personally relate to as well and a credit to you John for the superb way you brought the chapters together. Hopefully you might be able to get back to Moorwood Lane and relive the first adventures!?
    Until then, have a great weekend and look forward to your next adventure
    Cheers
    Paul.

      @themagicoffishing  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Paul, that is an incredibly meaningful and welcome comment 💙 Really glad you’ve enjoyed the book and thank you for the kind words of encouragement to others! 🙏😊📘 Do you know what, I actually did return to Moorwood Lane about two years ago, with my dad, around a year after we lost Mum. And I have a draft chapter about it in a second tome - but don’t get too excited as it’s one of only about four rough chapters and, since I added YouTubing to family life and work, I never get chance to get anywhere near it! But it was a moving trip and it seemed even smaller than I remembered it! Unfortunately, although there is a public footpath that runs beside it and up into the small wood, the pond is now owned by an impressive private property that has been created from over the abandoned farm house that I describe in those early chapters. So no more fishing, officially at least, and they have even put a duck house in the shallow end! But I’ve not tried asking for special permission to maybe have one afternoon back on there, so that could be something for me to keep on my ever growing fishing hit list 🤔 Cheers for now 🍻

    • @themagicoffishing
      @themagicoffishing  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Bob, I was exactly the same until around 4-5 years ago when I got some great advice from a local bailiff who is now a mate. They were a mythical fish to me. But the main things are conditions and timing - either high, coloured water for daylight fishing, or evenings and darkness when the water is clear and low. Plus keep it simple and strong. If they are in the mood they are in the mood and will take pellets, meat, maggots, worms, etc, etc. It’s only during daylight hours and low water when you might need a bit of finesse to trip one up. Keep on roving ✊😎🎣

    • @themagicoffishing
      @themagicoffishing  20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Very much so! It can often work if you have a feeder or lead that might be snagged - let the fish have some slack to pull the rig free - but I was clearly fishing without either and I was gobsmacked when it went from completely solid (for a good couple of minutes!) to ‘fish on’ again 🎉🎣

The owner was great to talk to.He had 5 lovely carp, I bagged up on some quality Roach and Perch, also what I thought was a tench turned out to be an escaped rainbow trout, only about a pound or so but did it battle. That wharf you showed on film, was that near Wisley? I used to look after a large garden there & have my lunch by the river,beautiful spot. All the best , thanks for another great watch.🐟🪱🎣👍

      It really is appreciated and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed some of the ‘older’ stuff on this channel too. Means a lot as I occasionally think that it’s such a shame there’s a year or more of fishing action on here that some people may never see, who are new to the channel.
      Thanks for taking the time to catch up.
      It’s funny you talk about catfish coz I’ve never had one (or not a proper one) and one of the clubs I belong to in Woking has a renowned carp and cat lake...
      They kinda scare me a bit, but that’s got to be a good thing?! Face your fears and all that 😱 🎣
      And I’ve recently met a young lad who is in the same club and seems pretty damn good at catching them! However, I may have missed the boat this year - now it’s getting colder - but that doesn’t mean I won’t take up the challenge at some point in 2025…
      I even spoke to a fellow member who told me that he’d had one on a super strong centrepin setup 🤯 🐈‍⬛🐟
      Watch out for the next couple of vids as I’ve just enjoyed a phenomenal trip to the tidal Trent 🐟🐟🐟🐟

    Yet another interesting video, well done. It's good to see someone using fairly simple tackle.
    I often wonder when I go into a large tackle shop and see the vast array of different groundbaits, boilies, expensive rods, very expensive poles and a mass of multi-coloured floats. Are these designed to catch anglers or fish? Does a fish know that you're holding a £2,000 pole or a cheap rod? What did fish used to eat before boilies, wafters and sweet corn came along? Just a thought. Again, nice video and proves that patience pays off.

    • @themagicoffishing
      @themagicoffishing  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks as always, John, glad you enjoyed it. I think we’ve made some massive strides in the quality of gear over the past few decades, certainly where the weight and responsiveness of rods are concerted, and the diameter and strength of line for example, but you’re right that there is so MUCH of it now and one thing that hasn’t changed a bit over the years is the fish! You definitely don’t need mountains of gear to catch them and it was getting back to basics - fishing for bites from anything with baits like worms on my local River Wey and some of the club lakes - that reawakened the true magic for me. That was the inspiration behind the book of course. Thanks for continuing to watch and taking the time to leave us your thoughts 🙏💙🎣🐟
