I always felt this one got underserved hate. I guess the huge point against it is a lack of interesting main characters, with the exception of Han. Out of all the movies, it really is the only one In the series about racing. Yes, the first two take place within the street race scene and has racing, but this movie legitimately banks on the main character learning a particular racing style, and culminates in an actual race with the antagonist. The first two were about solving a particular crime. While “Fast Five” is my overall favorite in the series, and I prefer the more action-oriented era of the later movies, “Tokyo Drift” is maybe my favorite of the original 3, and definitely is a soft spot for me haha.
Hell no. I like Han but he's a snake. I like DK better than Han, DK was the best. Someone he treated as family has been stealing from him? Yeah fuck han, he should have died right there and then bc he caused the deaths on that day

That's how Fast and Furious and the rest of the franchise came to be after convincing them to come back. Tokyo Drift was THEN written into the story after the fact. The after credits in Tokyo Drift was just a nod I think.
That's what I remember. I think it was supposed to be an attempt to do better internationally. Overall though, it actually did worse than the other two movies. You have the return to the franchise after this and both markets just continue to rise afterwards. They made the right move going back to what was working.

The movie mentioned in this video about Han is actually an even bigger deal. It’s a little indie crime movie called BETTER LUCK TOMORROW with an all Asian American cast with a yet to pop off John Cho. This movie was revolutionary for its representation of Asians. But what’s more fascinating is that Vin Diesel loved what Justin Lin did so much he deemed the film canon to the F&F universe. Several main characters from that film appear in F&F as a nod but as different characters. The skinny Asian guy in Han’s crew was one of the main characters and an Asian FBI agent in the fourth film was also a main character. But if people really like Han I absolutely encourage everyone to watch the film because it 1000% informs his entire character. Han starts out in that film as an asshole and kind of like the “bad influence” among the friend group, but when shit hits the fan, Han turns out to be the only one with an actual moral conscience and you see how this traumatic event forever influences his character in future Fast films. It really informs the “you make choices and never look back” even more. Han doesn’t look back because he’s been running from something his whole life and that film tells you the full story. His iconic snacking in the films was also born from the fact that he is CONSTANT chain smoker in the indie film and quit after the events of the film. Movie is seriously dope. Check it out!

That mustang at the end couldn't really be called a "muscle car" in my opinion. It had the body of a mustang, but literally everything else would have been replaced with Japanese performance parts. And in the case of the engine, it actually shared the same motor as a Skyline, which is called an RB26. So the car was just as much a tuner as the one DK was driving.
Same. I watched Tokyo drift in the movies back in 04 while my parents were stationed in Japan. That’s when I fell in love with cars. Then NFS became my favorite games of all time
Wow, this movie had some epic shots, I really loved the camera work. In the final race when the camera pans to the trees and we see a wide shot of the race, that shit was dope. I want more shots like that
Justin Lin directed this one. His eye for action is most likely why they wanted him back for another one. He would end up directing F4 through F6, and most recently F9. He’ll be directing F10 & F11 as well.
You never turn your back on The Normies. By the way, that wasn't American muscle. The engine clearly said "Nissan" on it. (They swapped then engine from the wrecked car) The match was just a tad more evenly matched, although the Mustang frame/body would still be pretty heavy.
best movie in the franchise, han is just an amazing character. his quote when he talks about life being simple and that if you make choices, you don't look back. perfect.

6:21 The only reason I wanted to watch this when it came out was because Keiko Kitagawa was in it, she played Sailor Mars in the live action Sailor Moon series.
yes that guy was missing fingers, its a sign that he is a member of the Yakuza, in the Yakuza when ever members make mistakes instead of killing them like in say the italian mafia. the Yakuza makes that member atone for their "SIN" by giving the tip of a finger. for every sin they cut off another tip. if you ever meet a elderly japanese man who is missing the tips of most of his fingers then there is a high likelyhood that said japanese man is either Yakuza or former Yakuza
The 2 fishermen at the docks are a huge reason why drifting is so popular. The guy in the hat is the creator of initial D and the guy in the blue is actually the real dk
@@decardtimmermans2753 Hmm, I thought it stood for Driver. You know "I'm a Driver with an initial D". But I guess dream also fits the storyline of Initial D.
Don't know if you noticed but the real life Drift King Keiichi Tsuchiya made a cameo in this. He's the fisherman that says "You call this drifting?". Keiichi is one of the OG drift racers, making is hugely popular in the late 70s. Unlike most others who either were rich or had a motorsport background, Keiichi learned drifting by street racing. He's also known for his races on Mountain Pass Roads in Japan (Ones like the final race in this movie) He also did the driving stunts with DKs Car.
Navi, Marketa, Cori, Suraj, and Micky are an amazing reaction team. No one talks over the other, they all have insightful or hilarious comments. Hope to see this group continue the rest of this ridiculous franchise and beyond. oh yes my favorite in the franchise! 😀 I used to run this movie several times over one summer just as background noise while I went to sleep. Window cracked, fan on low, it was perfect....good times
I love that even though this was a box office bomb by F&F standards and was critically derided, over time it has become more well received and even kind of like a cult classic (as much as any F&F ever could be). There have even been multiple "looking back on Tokyo Drift" type reviews that are super positive. Easily my favourite movie in the series and always has been. Plus, that soundtrack is lit.

The drift scenes in the crowded intersection are definitely CGI enhanced. You cannot close off a street in Japan for a movie shooting. There's actually a gigantic parking lot you can rent, specifially made for car scenes in Japan, where they built the intersection, and the background and a lot of the crowd was CGI.
This is this one of the best F&F movies!....Eventhough they used an AWD Car Mitsubishi Lancer EVO which is used for Rally Car but the producers decided to use it for Drifting...LoL Drifting is mainly for RWD Cars and they should used a S-Chassis (S13, S14 or S15) as the trainer car instead of an EVO..lol The Old Japanese dudes at the Fishing Dock are the Pioneers of Drifting etc..... So many "cheesy" things like the scene of the group of cars supposedly drifting through the mountains and there is no Tire Smoke or Tire Squealing and the main girl driving her drifting didn't seem like she drifting at all ...Aww man great stuff!... In the final race the Mustang does have a Skyline Engine called the RB Series which is a Straight 6cyl.....vs. a 350Z that came stock w/ a V6 Engine called the VQ...They never said what engine the 350Z had I don't think..
About the guy missing fingers: If you fuck up in Yakuza it's kind of a tradition to cut one of your fingers in front of your boss as kind of a penance / apology. They start cutting from their little finger inwards because your 2 last fingers are most associated with control/finesse/precision when maneuvering a katana (it's an oooold tradition). And you're basically marked forever and considered a huge dishonor
I have seriously enjoyed this journey so far with you guys watching this franchise, I love this saga I just seen the 9th movie at the imax theater last night in Florida! It was such a great experience. Some of the best action sequences I've ever seen and the character development in this one was put together very well but the story has extended to many places, in my opinion it's the most DIFFERENT film out of the entire franchise, very different feel to this one.
Vin Diesel actually only did the ending cameo in Tokyo Drift Bc the studio offered him creative rights over the Riddick properties. He had actually turned down appearing in XXX 2, and 2F2F so that way he could film Chronicles of Riddick, and later used his ownership of the rights to create the 3rd installment, Riddick. (The Riddick Trilogy are pretty significant box office failures, but have pretty large cult followings, and Riddick is often considered Vin’s best character)
Basically the reason for them making a sequel without any of the main characters coming back from the two previous movies was that this wasn't really intended as a sequel as such. This was meant to be a spin-off, a stand-alone movie that takes place in the same universe, but only really connected to the main movies through Dom's cameo appearance. F&F wasn't really a franchise yet at this point, just a movie that had received one previous sequel. They didn't have any plans to turn it into a huge franchise at this time either, so for all intents and purposes the story from the first two films/Brian's story was done. This was meant to just be a last little fun romp in the F&F universe, completely separate from anything else, but then later movies retconned it into being part of the main storyline.
The dock worker who approves of the drifting is not only the drift king in real life (as mentioned by another comment) but is also the main inspiration behind Initial D.
There is literally a Need For Speed Canyon where you have to race the bosses of each region down the canyon. And the way it works feels just like the ending, because you have to race twice. Once chasing them, the second time running from them. And you can go off the edge and die in it!
These first three movies brought more to the import car scene than almost anything. Although it was already really big, all the cars in the first films were all normal people brought to use for all the big racing scenes. I know someone who had a car in the first film, a fully kitted yellow EG civic with yellow interior, in the late 90s! lol
Time to get drifty! I like this one and I think it's enjoying a nice re-evaluation; it's still got a small charm to it while knowing it's kind of ridiculous. And this is the movie that introduced Han, the Shikamaru of the series, just effortlessly cool!
Even when it was originally released, I thought it kinda unnecessarily got a bum rap. With how insane the franchise has gotten, it is nice to go back to this one. For me, Fast Five is my favorite, and I love the more action-oriented soap-opera it’s become…. however, I totally have a soft spot for Tokyo Drift, and like it the best out of the racing-centric first 3.
the dockworker/fishing guy is called "Drift king" in real life. Tsuchiya Keiichi. He used to do illegal races in the mountains and later became a racing driver.
Probably been mentioned many of times, but the person who basically invented drifting, and the *actual* Drift King was the dock worker -- and he also did most of the drifting and stunts in the movie. :)
I read somewhere that Vin Diesel didn't get paid for this. He only wanted them to put the "Bandolero" song on his scene. And they did. And btw, Tokyo Drift came out in 2006, and Fast and Furious came out in 2009. So there was only a 3 year gap between them, not 7.
FYI the machine is just to get your ticket that you hand to the restaurant workers who then makes your meal according to the order in the ticket. It’s confusing I know but that’s how Japan culture is. Highly recommend you guys go visit and make a series of vlogs. I love Japan so much looking forward to go back when the crazy is over. That was the best! 😂 you guys are a cute couple And Micky’s pink slip comment was legendary 😂. Also i would love to write a screen play for fast movie based in India ala 3 Idiots formula. I would lmao writing it 🤣 Marketa’s story is actually Suraj and Micky going back in time Dark style and testing their drift skills 🤔 I love Navi, welcome back.
The older Yakuza guy is Sonny Chiba who is a legend in Japanese movies like Hanzo, which was a long movie series, as well as played Hitori Hanzo in Kill Bill. And tattoos are frowned upon in Japan because of their connection with the Yakuza. Yakuza depending on your status get full body tattoos.
The dock worker approving is the real drift king in real life
He actually is lol
Miroshi

@@K1ng_ib Yeah he was the one doing the actual drifting in the EVO. His real name is Keichi Tsuchiya

Idk why but this is my favorite of the Fast series, just has a certain charm about it compared to the other mega budget movies
It had memorable soundtracks, car stunts, cringy but memorable quotes and memes. What do the other movies have? Just "family"
It's because of the actual emphasis on racing culture in Japan. Like "Initial D" type vibes, up in the actual mountains drifting.

Drifting is mainly for RWD Cars and they should used a S-Chassis (S13, S14 or S15) as the trainer car instead of an EVO..lol
The Old Japanese dudes at the Fishing Dock are the Pioneers of Drifting etc.....
When Fast Five came out I saw it with my dad… he got a speeding ticket on the way home 😂
I forgot Uncle Kamata was Shin'ichi (Sonny) Chiba, loved him in Kill Bill
About the guy missing fingers: If you fuck up in Yakuza it's kind of a tradition to cut one of your fingers in front of your boss as kind of a penance / apology. They start cutting from their little finger inwards because your 2 last fingers are most associated with control/finesse/precision when maneuvering a katana (it's an oooold tradition).
And you're basically marked forever and considered a huge dishonor
That dock worker is the real life drift king
RIP Han.
Sadly, this isn't Science Fiction or he could come back from the dead.
Dude, it's Tokyo. Do you know how much the rent would be for a closet that size?
Let me tell you, he sleeping good!
lol
I have seriously enjoyed this journey so far with you guys watching this franchise, I love this saga I just seen the 9th movie at the imax theater last night in Florida! It was such a great experience. Some of the best action sequences I've ever seen and the character development in this one was put together very well but the story has extended to many places, in my opinion it's the most DIFFERENT film out of the entire franchise, very different feel to this one.
Fun Fact: This was Natalie Kelley first movie in her life.
"Initial D" actually stands for initial dream lol, thats the twist
Dad: what did I tell you?
Son: get in debt to a street racing heist God and get in a beef with the yakuza?
Dad: NO CARS!
Man I loved this movie, this the best FF movie. I remember watching it in high-school.
2:04 just to let you know - baseball and football are in different seasons so he could play both sports and have a baseball in his car.
The best fast and furious in my opinion!!
Suraj repping German police while watching a FF movie is kinda funny.
timestamp?
@@Year-Zero-BC his shirt has Polizei (police) on it
@@mcfrag2787 oh! thank you.
Vin Diesel doesn't have a speech impediment, you all just watch the first film for crying out loud! LOL
Finally, the anime one!
Uncle Kamata is played by none other than acting legend Sonny Chiba.
24:43 Japan was the first country to roll out UMTS (3G) in 2002, the movie is from 2006, theoretical maximum data transfer rates of 42 Mbit/s
I know someone who had a car in the first film, a fully kitted yellow EG civic with yellow interior, in the late 90s! lol
It's so good and all the ops are awesome
Yessir! Tokyo Drift is so good imo
Yes! My favorite guilty pleasure!
Love it!
The next three movies will kinda clear up the whole dom knowing han thing
14:46 That Blue Jacket Dock worker is the Real life Drift King of the Tokyo,
who did an cameo in this one
Probably been mentioned many of times, but the person who basically invented drifting, and the *actual* Drift King was the dock worker -- and he also did most of the drifting and stunts in the movie. :)
Best fast and furious movie 💯
Yall rlly turn a movie reaction to a comedy show sometimes 😂
Han is my fav too cuz he got with Wonder Woman first 😂
Also the cutest moment in this reaction is when Cori said when my kid...and Suraj’s eyes and ears perk right up. That was the best! 😂 you guys are a cute couple
And Micky’s pink slip comment was legendary 😂. Also i would love to write a screen play for fast movie based in India ala 3 Idiots formula. I would lmao writing it 🤣
Marketa’s story is actually Suraj and Micky going back in time Dark style and testing their drift skills 🤔
I love Navi, welcome back.
Dad, I need to bang out your mustang so I can drift for my life!!
Son, forget about it Cuh! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The dock worker with the blue jacket is the guy who invented drifting and touge racing.
12:38
Fun fact: (I forgot who lol) one of those guys is the actual drift king in real life
Guy in the blue jacket
