Excellent! Now someone's gotta figure out how to do the opposite. Would love to use the brand new wireless controllers on original N64 hardware. Edit: There's now an adapter out there that does exactly this and more! For those wondering, it's called the BlueRetro Receiver.
Thanks, Vince! Just to clarify some things: There are two different N64 to USB adapters by Mayflash. The first one Vince shows is the MF-103, a plug-n-play version that immediately works with the Switch. It's relatively new and designed when the N64 expansion service was announced. I believe the firmware CAN BE UPGRADED. Vince, maybe make a quick video showing this? The second Mayflash N64 adapter is an older but cheaper one, the PC043. It's only designed for PC, but the Titan One converts and combined the "PC input" to one Switch Pro controller, and controls can be remapped in software. You need extra Titans per controller if multiple players are needed, so this is more of a novelty solution than a practical one.
I remember the thumb stick with some frustration as they invariably failed over time on the earlier sticks and Smash Bros my kids mullered the thumb stick so badly I took the game away in the end as buying controllers was expensive and in a time when replacement sticks just didn't exist. The sticks back then were packed with a kind of chalk powder which was weird and I am guessing it was like french chalk acting as a lubricant and a shock absorber to keep the stick nice in there.
The quarter teaspoon of chalk powder was caused by the stick grinding against the gears and the surface of bowl. Overtime it made stick and gears loose and killed the controller, that was the major problem with the controller. Gamers these days apply a plastic friendly grease to the bowl and gears to slow down the wear
Yeah it wasn't really their fault. It was a design flaw with the controller. Mario Party 1 especially wears sticks down because of all the spinning that has to be done in one mini game.
I loved the N64 controller. Probably because the only thing I really played on it was Mario Kart so it always felt comfortable using a stick driving games.
@My Mate Vince: the real maping for the N64 controler, it is A for accelerated and B for brake, Z, or c down to used item, C up to zoom out, and I don't remember if it c right or left to change the display R to drift, and L for music track, press once for lower volume, press twice to have the music track muted, press L again when music track muted, to get back the music. Their is no music track for 3 to 4 player.
Why can't you use the first adaptor with the console tuner? Is it possible to do it with simple mapping rather than the advanced mapping needed for sin and punishment?
9:30 What is this adapter? Looks like one of those controller adapters banned from tournament play. I think the Mayflash Magic S Pro and Magic S Pro 2 are allowed in tournament play, but not adapters like Titan One or CronusMax.
Hi Vince. Can the console tuner (Titan One) be programmed to map n64 C-Right and C-down to a combo of buttons presses emulated as pro controller on the Switch via USB? Switch Online Ocarina of Time has ZR+A mapped to C-Right and ZR+B as C-Down which makes it hard to play. I can't remap in the switch button remapping because it's two button presses so i hoped the PC programmed Consoler tuner you showed here might be the answer. I want to map the game exactly as the old N64 had them. As I've read so far it's only possible on the sold out Nintendo N64 controllers. Perhaps you could test for the community?
I'm trying to use the second method, but are there any alternative N64 to USB adapters that work with the Titan 1? The mayflash one used in the video is collectively out of stock and I wasn't sure if some adapters don't detect correctly to allow the Titan 1 to do it's magic.
Does anyone have a workaround for the absence of a (-) minus button? Makes using the N64 games difficult if you want to change games or use save states.
Why do you have aftermarket ferrite beads on your n64 controller wires? They already have them from the factory inside the plug end of each controller.
Would it work on the new super smash bros as I watched another guys video and he said to do a smash attack in the game you have to hold down a and b and would be a shame as I would only be getting it to play the new super smash bros with the old controller
I own the switch N64 controller but seeing they are being scalped and only Nintendo sells them It would be tricky to get 4 n64 controllers and these games are horrible with the pro controller Question, can the usb adapter be set to 2 and 3 player respectively?
I used the first set up but I can’t find a button for the (-) button to access the Suspend Menu in Nintendo Switch online. Anyone else having this problem?
There's another method: raphnet n64 to either gamecube or wiimote adapter (wiimote version has no rumble pak support but I don't really care for rumble on n64 games they weren't designed too much in mind like nowadays) and a 8bitdo gbros adapter.
Those strain relief enclosures look very large for the original controllers. I assume that's just how they were in the UK? If I remember correctly, the controllers we had in the US don't have any such strain relief,
So if the turbo button can spam a button you hold, we could easily beat Cuphead with the switching weapon button, along with a roundabout and lobber attacks.
Great video! If you see this, would it be possible for you to drop a link for exactly what I need to buy to make this rig work? I would really like to be able to play with original hardware and remap buttons.

Mario Kart 64 does not support the rumble pak at all, it never did, but it does support the controller pak. I do think it's sad and a bit inexcusable that Nintendo didn't devise some kind of controller pak emulation type features, they really should have and I wish they had. There were some N64 games that used the controller pak exclusively for saving game data, I think particularly of DOOM 64 and Duke Nukem 64. Others did too I think.
