My man. People think I'm high when I talk about how great the Caribbean is. Easily my favorite Spyderco currently. Great lock, great sized handle, super light for it's size, and that utterly stainless steel. I can't say it's the best looking knife ever, but functionally speaking with it's blade and handle size to weight ratio- it wins.

Just now in 2023 discovering your informative and entertaining videos. This one made me think, but not for long. I’m old and old school. I could do with any one of many knives I own, but one stands out as most versatile, and time tested. Yes, my Buck 110 drop point in S30V. It is a grandfather’s knife and I’m a grandfather. And like my Buck, I was born and shaped in Idaho.

    Would’ve been my pick!
After having done a number of practical “one knife challenges” i would say that the Caribbean is just about optimal.
I bought a military because it had many similarities is overall function and form. Had I known about this knife earlier i may have picked that up instead. Always liked the tenacious and the Caribbean comes across as a larger working man’s tenacious that is impervious to the elements. Overall a great knife.

If I was being marooned on a desert island , I’d keep the Bark River as it’s tough, adaptable, sharpenable and great for every survival task, but if I was going to continue my life, as is, I’d have to keep a sub 3" slip joint, so it’d be either an Enzo PK70 or my JE Made Lanny’s Clip. However, it should be my SAK Pioneer X.

Changed my Benchmade Anthem over to bronze washers, I'd pick that if I only got one knife. Runner up would be my Smoke TM1. M390 on both, very well balanced steel, both easy to carry and a useful blade shape. Anthem is just a very simple construction and I have a soft spot for integrals, and while the Smoke is probably my actual favorite knife, it is just a little less convenient to open immediately if you want to actually cut something.

Cool video Pete. As usual I'll give my favorite bits of the video. I'm working on my video right now.
    Cool Bits:
    - Admitting you are growing out of steel snobbery
    - The way you pronounce “baton”
    - Unpressed Birdshot IV shirt
    - Slick Glasses (I genuinely do like them. I just started wearing glasses myself)
    - Buck Marksman appearance. I've never seen it.
    - Final choice of the Spyderco Carribean even though most people thought you would choose the Spydiechef
    - Tagging and shouting my channel

I think your top choice IS a beautiful knife. The high visibility stripes are functional. If you drop your knife then you should be able to find it, and form follows function therefor it is beautiful.
It is for this very reason that painted my only EDC knife (a small cheap no name folder) bright pink. I call it Anti-Theft Pink and it's not offensive, it's useful.

The Marksmen is probably one of my favorite and most underrated knives Ive had . Kinda flew under the radar for awhile . I would love if they did a micarta handle version with m390 and the Tanto shape . As far as a one carry for all id probably go with my benchmade mini grip or para 3 , both with custom scales.

Also I have always been FASCINATED with your great Country but for the life of me it's also one of the most DANGEROUS countries when you consider all the creatures you have that can absolutely KILL YOU DEAD from crocks to venomous snakes to many other things and for that reason alone you should be able to carry any form of knife or firearm with you anytime you want to and in any location you are at. Very interesting choice; honestly I have never held one of these knives, nor seen too much info about them overall. Yes, the design of that handle seems to have been a bad joke conceived while drunk, *but* an all-around useful, solid knife is what it is and by your recommendation and some of the others in comments, I may have to give this eyesore a go on camping trips.

Very interesting exercise, choices, and rationales, Pete. For me it would have been an easy choice and a very short video - Mora Kansbol. Relatively small and utilitarian-looking, so it won't freak people out, but big enough to do most normal cutting tasks, lots of carry options (though I don't recommend internally...especially with the multi-mount sheath system), ultra-lightweight, super-ergonomic, virtually indestructible, no moving parts, stain resistant so low-maintenance, easy to sharpen, and did I mention it cuts things really, really well?

Everything/everyday means using the knife. Regardless of the steel a knife, any knife, will need to be sharpened. Steel 'porn' is a good way to get people to buy more knives. So the ability to maintain an edge and be kept up in the field is paramount to the usefulness of any knife. Thanks for the review.

Interesting topic. My thoughts: Those knives are too nice and too expensive to be used for everything. I'd say everything means it would also be substituting a cheap craft knife. I also think edge retention is overrated in this regard. Better to have an edge that is easy to touch up and repair with a pocket stone to have it at peak performance before every task. 420HC, 12c27, 440c, 4116, AUD-8 and a few others should offer this and adequate corrosion resistance, while keeping the price down. Folders are also very uncomfortable to work with as soon as you have to put som power into your cuts. Like when working with wood.
I would personally recommend the Buck 673 or 679 fixed blades. Excellent price point, fixed blade, full tang, pocketable and easy on the hands. I paid around 18 usd for mine.

If I had to choose one knife for absolutely everything, I'd pick the Ka-Bar Becker BK2. It won't hold an edge as long as a more premium steel, but you can baton wood, cut down a tree or even pry with it without having to worry too much about killing it and it's relatively small, and therefore lighter, then many fixed blades that are meant for very hard use. I wouldn't take a folder or a harder steel on a show like Alone for fear of it breaking, but I'd definitely take the BK2.

    • @blueeyeswhitedragon9839
      @blueeyeswhitedragon9839 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I understand the "tank-like" performance of the Becker, but a SAK is then also required for everything else that the BK2 does not do well. This is not to down-play the nature of "over-built" knives...I like them, they have their place, but a small, thin bladed knife knife is the perfect companion to a Becker. But overall, Bob, I agree with you for bush, survival usage.

I like small fixed blades for "one knife for everything" purposes. I love my Becker BK16 and Lionsteel M5, there's the Lionsteel M4, Bark River Bravo 1LT, etc etc. It's a lot easier to do more tasks with a knife that's too big than one that's too small. At least in my "I forgot all my other knives when I went hiking/camping" moments. Even my best folders leave me wanting a decent fixed blade
