I was a young panther in 1967. Each morning I would go to the breakfast before school, and after school, I would get help with my homework from the Panthers.. This was in Detroit.

That seems to be mostly the Black Panther's own fault. They were clearly trying to project the image of militant revolutionaries, so independently of FBI misinformation it really shouldn't be surprising that people remember them as militant revolutionaries.

As a gun loving american I've always loved that thumbnail image. African americans were often deprived of THEIR right to bear arms, especially in the south where it could be nearly impossible for them to legally own guns and even when they did legally own guns, they could still be arrested for owning or legally using a gun. The black Panthers showing up at government building legally bearing arms like white ameticans gave often done in defiance of the racist discrimination theyve often faced was beautiful.

You ignore the fact that a majority of inner city violence is gang related, alot of inner city gangs in Chicago have affiliations with our cartel neighbors to the south so incentive for violence drugs and weapons are higher. Chicago also has murder rates many times the national average and has a higher population density to your average city. Our access to guns as Americans is relatively unparalleled, history has created more wealth inequality so you have more black people poor and crime has a higher correlation to socioeconomic status than culture and that's just a few factors.

Violence is rampant in the inner-city area due to poverty and lack of proper education, community programs, and government-funded resources. It is clear as day who the government favors and continually and systematically keeps on top.
As someone who comes from an immigrant background, but also grew up in the deep South, I was always taught to fear the BPP. It really wasn't until college where I took classes about African-American history where I realized that their story was much more complex. I'm also disabled and they were pretty much the only allies the current Disability Rights Movement had.
I agree, I also had this impression growing up that the party was just horrible. I had no clue how complex it was and definitely didn't hear about the lunch programs, the Rainbow Coalition, etc. Although, there are many more missed stories in our history. Always learning!

@@luxinvictus9018 It's more nuanced than that: the peaceful approach only gains traction when there is fear of a more violent uprising. Malcom X and MLK, whatever their differences, inadvertently helped each other: X scared Washington so badly that MLK was in a prime position to negotiate, which in turn bettered the overall status of black people, achieving collective good. If the status quo is challenged, it will always negotiate with the party that is less disruptive, but it will not negotiate at all if there is not real fear of a more disruptive uprising. To negotiate peace, someone must be holding a gun, even if it is never fired.

Anytime an ally takes a chance to help tell truths on American history, to me, it stands out as pure bravery. As a gun owner, the NRA is a joke. Thay have a constant history of compromising and giving up liberties. If someone wants to support a good gun rights organization support the Firearm policy coalition or gun owners of America.
When I was in school the black panthers got a passing mention and they said they were a violent terror organization. I didn't know for years what they actually did and were about.

There were black panther inspired organisations in Israel and New Zealand. In Israel it was called black panthers and sought to combat the discrimination experienced by Mizrahi (Jews form the middle east) Jews. In New Zealand the organisation was called the Polynesian Panthers and sought to combat discrimination experienced by Polynesian people living in New Zealand

Many radicals in the '80s and '90s said the police and FBI were what crushed the Civil Rights movement. I was skeptical of that for a long time, but in recent years I have come to see that certainly was what was done.

I was surprised to see that they had ties to other countries. It's also interesting to know that they were more in touch with China than the Soviet Union. I'm personally conflicted about the action. Even if it was technically legal, doing it before they had enough influence and power to actually take over and do anything was a rash decision and probably did more to worsen their reputation than anything else.
I like the idea of releasing a video about the reality behind a historical fiction film. It could encourage people to pay more attention to other eras such as colonial America.
I learned how to bartend from a old, salty guy that had been behind the pine pouring drinks since the 50's. When I asked who was the most famous person he ever bartended for he said, "I served tons of celebrities, even a President, but I'll tell you that nobody had the same gravity as Huey P. Newton. I like italian movies inspired by real events, made in the 70s or about the 70s. They have that spirit of the era, a couple even got distribution in the Soviet Bloc. If you want to have a laugh, try Vogliamo i Colonelli. If you want to have a leftist look at far right street violence, watch San Babila 20 PM. If I would be teaching Civil Rights era, I'd recommend reading rather than watching. And among all the books I would recommend Peter Gelderloos' book on nonviolence.

@@mattcrump9278 you deal with the socioeconomic factors that cause violent terrorist attacks as well as violent crime, most of which can be done in non-violent ways, with the exception of terrorism, although the current "violent" strategy of combating domestic and international terrorism has only created more terrorists. an approach more akin to the northern Kurdish people of rojava( a independent libertarian socialist state in syria), i.e, arming people in self-defense against terrorists, providing therapy to victims of terrorist attacks and educating potential terrorist recruits about the flaws of their views, all of which has helped in their successful fight against isis.

@9:44 I think it would be important to add that in regards to the "people v. Newton" case on the shooting of the officers, despite being convicted, he repealed his case at California's court of appeals where his conviction was reversed and called for a retrial, there were two mistrials after that and by the fourth one all charges were dismissed.
From what I understand the revolution was well defined within the group. Honestly it seems from the actions and values alone, that it's very self evident what that revolution entails.

Hey Cyph, pretty rad video! I find it surprising that the Panthers' outreach programs happened upon its founding, because I thought that was on the agenda from the beginning rather than later. Funny how Huey Newton in 1968 denounced anarchism, got a response from philosopher Murray Bookchin a year later, and then used tactics and strategies that were based on the tenants of anarchist-pacifism, which is outreach. The BPP is indeed a fascinating chapter in African-American history.

You should look more into the Fred Hampton assassination. Cypher is really underselling how much of a clear assassination it was. The FBI informant that had fed the feds details of the building's security and floor plans of the building also may have drugged Hampton with barbiturates. Regardless of who gave Hampton the barbiturates or if Hampton took them voluntarily himself it was scientifically impossible for Hampton to have been conscious when the police raided the building. That didn't stop the cops from breaking into his room and shooting him in the back and then after an exchange of dialogue among the officers confirming his identity shooting his head multiple times as he lay unconscious in bed next to his nine-months pregnant wife and then after the fact in court claiming that Hampton reached for a gun. Oh, and the other member of the group that was killed by the cops, Mark Clark, the guy who was the only Black Panther who fired a shot? People like to depict it as a justified shooting by pointing out that he fired his gun, letting you fill in the gaps and insinuating that he fired at the cops. Technically he did fire his weapon - he fired his weapon into the ceiling while experiencing death convulsions from getting shot in the chest. It's one of the dirtiest and most flagrant hit jobs organized by a government I've ever read about.

The panthers truly had the best intentions, and wanted to be there for their communities. The way they went about it for a good while was not the brightest though.
Thank you for posting this video. The Black Panther Party is a very fascinating group. Did you happen to come across Richard Aoki while researching? From what I read the guy was the one who influenced Huey and Bobby into carrying guns? Also, from some articles I saw he may have been an FBI informant to, but I never got around to researching those articles.
Initially the BPP wasn't strictly about black people or separatism. They wanted under Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale to unite repressed people of all colors. They also did great community work.
Would you look into AIM and the rainbow coalition, it's a real big part of our history ,and is all too often, not taught in schools. You're like the only internet historian that will actually cover these topics, and that's great, we need more like you.
I may not agree with the panthers politically especially the revolution thing, but I thank them in most ways of what they've done in the black community

They were a funded organization of an elected government that was supposed to be investigating and enforcing the law. Instead they straight up spread disinformation to it's own citizens and committed murders. The BP party is way less in the wrong then the FBI, it's not even close.
@@travisbewley7084 BPP confronted with the police, were quite violent in behavior, nationalist, full on "ends justify the means" mentality, so they believed in doing things violently, they did counter-patrolling, caused riots. The best thing they did was the outreaching programs but they weren't exactly saints, MLK's movement were better
@@accent1666 it's a matter of scale and responsibility. The BP movement was commiting violence as survival while the FBI did it as subjecation. You can't morally equivocate this as a "Both sides" argument and take away from how monsterious and immoral the FBI was.
I think the the best way to sum they up is that they were a good cause that did (or at least tried to do) a lot of good things. But they sometimes did it in the wrong ways

10:30 the white Australian on that podium is Peter Norman. He wore a black power badge for solidarity, although didn’t give the salute. When he got home, he was vilified, and kicked off any further Olympic teams. Fortunately later, much later in the 00’s, he received apologies and accolades for his small But important gesture at an important moment in civil rights history. He remained good friends with the other black athletes on that podium throughout their lives.
Seems like the Black Panthers were basically the result of people who didn't believe that the government or police could adequately serve them. If nobody is willing to rescue you then I guess you had to rely on people that would.

I've met Bobby Seale, and been on walking tours of North Oakland from former Black Party Panther members highlighting the geography and origins of the movement. I just want to get this comment in, because tankies (Marxist-Leninists, Maoists, etc) so desperately want to claim the BPP identity and say the party was with their ideology all along. Yes, the BPP were socialists, but they balked at and/or were indifferent to authoritarian communism. Seale, on the record, has repeatedly said they sold Mao's Little Red Book to naive UC Berkeley undergrads because they got a bulk deal on them and it was an easy hustle for fundraising: they never read or cared for the contents.

There was also a document assembled by the Maoist Internationalist Ministry that touched on Bobby Seale. It’s called: “DEFEND THE LEGACY OF THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY.” In conclusion, the newer leaders distorted the history of the party as a whole.
They were ideologically pretty diverse, but they were generally MLs. That said, local chapters around the country outside of Oakland tended towards more bottom-up organizational structures. But even if certain chapters did organize in a more anarchistic form, they all viewed the party as the vanguard of the revolution, which is specifically a Marxist-Leninist thing. Also, I'm an anarchist myself, but calling all Marxist-Leninists and Maoists "tankies" is quite cringe. On the ground and in person, I have no choice but to organize with MLs and MLMs, and the vast majority of them are quite reasonable and quite willing to organize with anarchists. They very rarely fit the stereotype of the internet "tankie." (I'm not claiming that insufferable tankies don't exist; I'm merely pointing out that it's largely an internet phenomenon, and that sectarianism doesn't play much of a role when organizing in person). Furthermore, there is also the stereotype of the always online, white internet anarchist who is unwilling to cooperate with anyone who doesn't fit within their tiny ideological scope. Dogmatic sectarianism rarely exists in the streets or in the workplace because it CAN'T. If we're actually gonna get anything done, we have to be willing to work together towards common goals.

As a gun loving american I've always loved that thumbnail image. African americans were often deprived of THEIR right to bear arms, especially in the south where it could be nearly impossible for them to legally own guns and even when they did legally own guns, they could still be arrested for owning or legally using a gun. The black Panthers showing up at government building legally bearing arms like white ameticans gave often done in defiance of the racist discrimination theyve often faced was beautiful.

Our access to guns as Americans is relatively unparalleled, history has created more wealth inequality so you have more black people poor and crime has a higher correlation to socioeconomic status than culture and that's just a few factors.

Violence is rampant in the inner-city area due to poverty and lack of proper education, community programs, and government-funded resources. It is clear as day who the government favors and continually and systematically keeps on top.
As someone who comes from an immigrant background, but also grew up in the deep South, I was always taught to fear the BPP. It really wasn't until college where I took classes about African-American history where I realized that their story was much more complex. I'm also disabled and they were pretty much the only allies the current Disability Rights Movement had.

@@luxinvictus9018 It's more nuanced than that: the peaceful approach only gains traction when there is fear of a more violent uprising. Malcom X and MLK, whatever their differences, inadvertently helped each other: X scared Washington so badly that MLK was in a prime position to negotiate, which in turn bettered the overall status of black people, achieving collective good. If the status quo is challenged, it will always negotiate with the party that is less disruptive, but it will not negotiate at all if there is not real fear of a more disruptive uprising. To negotiate peace, someone must be holding a gun, even if it is never fired.

In Israel it was called black panthers and sought to combat the discrimination experienced by Mizrahi (Jews form the middle east) Jews. In New Zealand the organisation was called the Polynesian Panthers and sought to combat discrimination experienced by Polynesian people living in New Zealand
in India we had Dalit Panthers who took up the cause of people who were treated as untouchable by the upper castes.

If I would be teaching Civil Rights era, I'd recommend reading rather than watching. And among all the books I would recommend Peter Gelderloos' book on nonviolence.

Newton" case on the shooting of the officers, despite being convicted, he repealed his case at California's court of appeals where his conviction was reversed and called for a retrial, there were two mistrials after that and by the fourth one all charges were dismissed.
From what I understand the revolution was well defined within the group. Honestly it seems from the actions and values alone, that it's very self evident what that revolution entails.

Hey Cyph, pretty rad video! I find it surprising that the Panthers' outreach programs happened upon its founding, because I thought that was on the agenda from the beginning rather than later. Funny how Huey Newton in 1968 denounced anarchism, got a response from philosopher Murray Bookchin a year later, and then used tactics and strategies that were based on the tenants of anarchist-pacifism, which is outreach. The BPP is indeed a fascinating chapter in African-American history.

You should look more into the Fred Hampton assassination. Cypher is really underselling how much of a clear assassination it was.
The FBI informant that had fed the feds details of the building's security and floor plans of the building also may have drugged Hampton with barbiturates. Regardless of who gave Hampton the barbiturates or if Hampton took them voluntarily himself it was scientifically impossible for Hampton to have been conscious when the police raided the building. That didn't stop the cops from breaking into his room and shooting him in the back and then after an exchange of dialogue among the officers confirming his identity shooting his head multiple times as he lay unconscious in bed next to his nine-months pregnant wife and then after the fact in court claiming that Hampton reached for a gun.
Oh, and the other member of the group that was killed by the cops, Mark Clark, the guy who was the only Black Panther who fired a shot? People like to depict it as a justified shooting by pointing out that he fired his gun, letting you fill in the gaps and insinuating that he fired at the cops. Technically he did fire his weapon - he fired his weapon into the ceiling while experiencing death convulsions from getting shot in the chest.
It's one of the dirtiest and most flagrant hit jobs organized by a government I've ever read about.

Thank you for posting this video. The Black Panther Party is a very fascinating group. Did you happen to come across Richard Aoki while researching? From what I read the guy was the one who influenced Huey and Bobby into carrying guns? Also, from some articles I saw he may have been an FBI informant to, but I never got around to researching those articles.
Initially the BPP wasn't strictly about black people or separatism. They wanted under Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale to unite repressed people of all colors. They also did great community work.
Would you look into AIM and the rainbow coalition, it's a real big part of our history ,and is all too often, not taught in schools. You're like the only internet historian that will actually cover these topics, and that's great, we need more like you.
I may not agree with the panthers politically especially the revolution thing, but I thank them in most ways of what they've done in the black community

@@accent1666 you serious? The FBI was not some group of people trying to do the best they could in an unjust system. They were a funded organization of an elected government that was supposed to be investigating and enforcing the law. Instead they straight up spread disinformation to it's own citizens and committed murders. The BP party is way less in the wrong then the FBI, it's not even close.
@@travisbewley7084 BPP confronted with the police, were quite violent in behavior, nationalist, full on "ends justify the means" mentality, so they believed in doing things violently, they did counter-patrolling, caused riots.
The best thing they did was the outreaching programs but they weren't exactly saints, MLK's movement were better
@@accent1666 it's a matter of scale and responsibility. The BP movement was commiting violence as survival while the FBI did it as subjecation. You can't morally equivocate this as a "Both sides" argument and take away from how monsterious and immoral the FBI was.
I think the the best way to sum they up is that they were a good cause that did (or at least tried to do) a lot of good things. But they sometimes did it in the wrong ways

When he got home, he was vilified, and kicked off any further Olympic teams. Fortunately later, much later in the 00’s, he received apologies and accolades for his small But important gesture at an important moment in civil rights history. He remained good friends with the other black athletes on that podium throughout their lives.
Seems like the Black Panthers were basically the result of people who didn't believe that the government or police could adequately serve them.

I've met Bobby Seale, and been on walking tours of North Oakland from former Black Party Panther members highlighting the geography and origins of the movement. I just want to get this comment in, because tankies (Marxist-Leninists, Maoists, etc) so desperately want to claim the BPP identity and say the party was with their ideology all along. Yes, the BPP were socialists, but they balked at and/or were indifferent to authoritarian communism. Seale, on the record, has repeatedly said they sold Mao's Little Red Book to naive UC Berkeley undergrads because they got a bulk deal on them and it was an easy hustle for fundraising: they never read or cared for the contents.
This is insanely false. I guide you to the document: ““Concrete Analysis of Concrete Conditions”: A Study of the Relationship between the Black Panther Party and Maoism”
There was also a document assembled by the Maoist Internationalist Ministry that touched on Bobby Seale. It’s called: “DEFEND THE LEGACY OF THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY.”
In conclusion, the newer leaders distorted the history of the party as a whole.
They were ideologically pretty diverse, but they were generally MLs. That said, local chapters around the country outside of Oakland tended towards more bottom-up organizational structures. But even if certain chapters did organize in a more anarchistic form, they all viewed the party as the vanguard of the revolution, which is specifically a Marxist-Leninist thing.
Also, I'm an anarchist myself, but calling all Marxist-Leninists and Maoists "tankies" is quite cringe. On the ground and in person, I have no choice but to organize with MLs and MLMs, and the vast majority of them are quite reasonable and quite willing to organize with anarchists. They very rarely fit the stereotype of the internet "tankie." (I'm not claiming that insufferable tankies don't exist; I'm merely pointing out that it's largely an internet phenomenon, and that sectarianism doesn't play much of a role when organizing in person). Furthermore, there is also the stereotype of the always online, white internet anarchist who is unwilling to cooperate with anyone who doesn't fit within their tiny ideological scope.
Dogmatic sectarianism rarely exists in the streets or in the workplace because it CAN'T. If we're actually gonna get anything done, we have to be willing to work together towards common goals.

I think a another element to this is when a society has changed the less radical elements of what brought them their will always be fetishized. Whether the new society is good or bad state, it will not encourage radical actions.
