  • Getting out and filming a fly fishing video is something ive been wanting to do for a while and as im new to fly fishing it was hard to get done. This is my first real day of fly fishing and by no means am i good, but i sure got the hang of it and was able to land a bunch of nice fish. Catching a fish on the fly is insane and very different from what im used to. Its an incredibly cool way to catch fish and i cant wait to do more of it.

    The first two are bluegills and the crappies are all males, not females. Black Crappie males turn very dark during the spawn, and are responsible for making and guarding the nests. The females are lighter, lay their eggs, then go to deeper water.

    That combo rig is great to respool with #8 floating line and wing a hair mouse or largest size sneaky pete to largemouth and smallmouth bass.

    the combo looks like a Martin 3pc. 5-6 wt. inexpensive fly combo, one of the most fun ever. 29-39 bucks, 19.99 when it's on sale. comes with line and a leader already on it. crazy fun, there's no drag on the reel; it's all manual, the reel is just to house line. the rod is actually quite good.
    if you go for big bass with this combo, try re-spooling with #8 line and put on fingerless gloves.
    thanks for this fun angling video.

    Looks like your reel is set up for left hand retrieve. We slay pan fish down in Texas on wooly buggers, all leach patterns, and all ant patterns... Great video!!!

    • @andyfletcher3561
      @andyfletcher3561 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you fish the ants dry? I did for trout, but I'll be going after my first bass/sunfish/crappie tomorrow, so just curious. All I have right now is a couple of clouser minnows. Hopefully they'll work. 40 years of fly fishing and I've fished wet maybe 20 times, mostly from my caddis getting too wet rofl

    If you like the fight on a western fly rod, you should try Tenkara fly fishing. Every bluegill feels like a tournament bass. There's no reel. Just a rod, level line, tippet, and fly. It's crazy fun!

      I know this has been awhile since the video was put out or this comment was commented but if you still haven't gotten a fly setup I would suggest going on eBay and getting a maxcatch 3wt for panfish but if you're going for bass or pike I'd get a 8wt so you could throw larger flies. I purchased my 3wt for around 70 dollars and I've caught atleast two hundred fish over the past two summers. Anything from bluegill crappie perch to smallmouth largies and small pike. But pike aren't too shy so if you're going for pike tie a mono leader about 7 foot and to that a two foot section of about 15 pound test braid the braid should suffice and it's alot easier to throw than a wire leader.

    Go with a nail knot for your fly line / leader connection. For leader to tippet I prefer a blood knot or double surgeons knot. For tying on a fly you can’t go wrong with a Davies knot or improved clinch knot.

    Just a word of advice - always have forceps, nippers on you when you fish. That way you can make the decision right there when you land it if the hook can be removed safely or you need to cut the line off. Even though they are panfish, limit the amount of time the fish is out of the water unless you plan on keeping it.

      I have to agree with Ryan. People don't typically wade in ponds/lakes. For one, a fair amount of places don't let you wade in Stillwater. Secondly, unless it's a gravel/rock bed - you may be stepping into to feet of muck and may get stuck or not be able to wade out that far - so what would be the advantage?

    all thee fish I this vid besides the bass and crappie, were bluegill. sunfish have distinctive bright blue line going from there bottom lip to there gill plate and are usually brighter and more beautiful than your standard bluegill. also you can tell the gender of a bluegill by the color, a female is usually the larger, and paler in color, while the male is dark purple and black back, and less aggressive.

      First looked like a wooley bugger to me, or similar. Second was some sort of bead head nymph. Not sure which as I've only fly fished for trout and almost exclusively used dries. So he was definitely fly fishing. When I was doing it 3-4 days a week I could have made decent casts where he was, but just starting out and in that cover he was doing a lot of plunking, but I think that's acceptable under the circumstances. I've fly fished for 40+ years and I'm going after bass/pan fish for the first time in the morning. I'm sure I will have a lot to learn.
