21:42 "I'm not going to lie to you and tell you it's the easiest thing you've ever done but I bet it's a lot easier than you think.".......As the kid in the background catches the tree
I’m just starting out myself, I love the look on that kids face at the end there when his fly got caught in that tree! I know that feeling too well! Great video.
"The reverse double mocha spiral cast... just kidding" part took me out 🤣🤣 been really interested in getting into fly fishing and this video really broke it down well for me!
This was truly informative. I see myself long ago searching for every tidbit of the learning. This is a great place for a new guy. I am totally impressed.
If one of your friends is a fly fishing enthusiast, strike up a conversation about fly fishing. Chances are good you can borrow gear for a day or two. Waders and boots can sometimes be rented from a local fly shop. The first couple days on the water is unlikely to be fun and relaxing so set realistic expectations and approach the first fishing like any sport..... learning basic mechanics and practicing. Having help from an experienced fly caster can be very helpful if you know someone or can afford a couple lessons. Keep it simple and just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Thicker tippet is easier to cast and not tangle and may be a good choice (eg-3x) so you can focus on your casting and spend less time fussing with tangles. Once you have a serviceable cast you can get into thinner tippet and longer leaders that fish are less likely to see.
The production quality of this video is astounding. Some of the best video instruction, fishing locations, and sheer entertainment value of any fishing video out there. Well done! Now I'm off to practice my reverse double mocha spiral cast!
Awesome to hear and I know Tom would like this news. We just want everyone to know that fly fishing is not difficult to learn and is really quite simple. Have a great fishing season!
Great video. I've never fly fished before... What do you do after the cast? Let it float? Do you reel it right back in? Slow and steady? Or sporadically? Is the idea that the fish will strike as soon as it hits the surface? Ie. at what point is the cast dead, if ever?
Lots of questions, recommend you continue watching the other videos in the series to help answer your points. Good luck on your journey of discovery and enjoyment!
When cabelas opened three years ago... i had a guy named jim teeny help me make my fly he knew i was having problems went outside they had a demo i tried what is being shown in the video he said the roll cast would be better for me
Hy, can i use a 5-6wt for pike? Or i can use a 7-8wt for chub? I can broke the 7-8wt rod if i fish chub or trout? Or what is the inconvenient? Sry for my english...
I seem to always hit the fly when coming forward. like the line snaps against the fly... maybe slowing down, and allowing the rod to do the work will help?
peterson994 yes its best if you try to let the line straighten out before you send your line first, also moving your rod from the 1-2 o clock area( behind ur head) to 10-11 o clock area(in front of your head)
I'm not related to this video in any way. But, TFO and Orvis both make good starter kits. About $200 and $150 respectively. They are both complete ready to fish and good starter sets. A good starter weight rod would be a 6. Unless you bass fish or saltwater then I would suggest an 8 weight. Otherwise a 6 is good for most smaller fish. It will be slightly over what you need for really small fish/flies.
Some people have a really difficult time getting past the perceived learning curve with fly fishing. For 20 years, I’ve been trying to convince my brother that it’s nowhere near as he thinks...
This is cruelty to put a hook on a fish and then let it go again! Why not just eat it! You are wasting fish time and your time ! Thank you have a great day!
Tom, do we really need more pressure on our precious finite resources? Do you really want to go to your favorite stream stretch, only to find someone there before you? Do you like to go fishing next to other obnoxious anglers, elbow to elbow? I love everything about fly fishing; from its history, its tradition, to the solitude I find in the beautiful outdoors. The latter is a huge aspect which attracts me to this way of life. Yes, I’m being selfish but you, in the fly fishing industrial complexe, you’re being greedy and that’s way worse and irresponsible.
Everyone has an opinion, I think Tom is trying to say is that learning the basics is not that difficult. But yes, learning to be a "black belt" in fly fishing takes quite a bit to learn and master. Thanks for feedback
These are the best/most clear animations that I’ve seen for knot tying. As a beginner, the entire video was super useful, thanks!
Tom you do a great job explaining fly fishing..your voice is very easy to listen too. Your a good teacher.
I am super high/stoned right now, and watching this video is absolutely amazing! !
I just bought myself an entry level a fly rod for Christmas. Going to see if I like it before investing in a better set up.
same here... any update on your like fly fishing ?

The 'volunteers'? :)
Well done, Tom. Thoroughly enjoyable and useful
Honestly I'm trying to refresh my skills after a decade off fly fishing, ordered a new 10wt to add to my collection for catfish, pike, and lake trout.
Love watching your work, Tom. This show's the best.
Oh man...this beginner needed this vid. Super helpful info, gentlemen.

Getting kids outside and teaching them these past times is so important. Keep it up Mr. Rosenbauer!
21:43 Don't worry kid, been there done that.
I didn't even notice him in the background lmao
Been there, done that, and until the day you put down the rod for good the next one's comin'...

Tom is Bob ross if he was a fisherman
Yeah they have the same vibe. It’s kind of indescribable.
Exactly what I thought at first
True, but something about that Pete guy in these videos I find annoying.
I've watched other series hosts, but there's just something about Tom.
Big facts.
The production quality of this video is astounding. Some of the best video instruction, fishing locations, and sheer entertainment value of any fishing video out there. Well done! Now I'm off to practice my reverse double mocha spiral cast!

Great video to getting started with fly fishing. Thanks for posting! And the girls are so awesome!
Really good show and information. Gonna send the link to my non-fly fishing friends. They wonder why I like fishing with flies so much....
Awesome to hear and I know Tom would like this news. We just want everyone to know that fly fishing is not difficult to learn and is really quite simple. Have a great fishing season!
following all the regulations and map reading would be something kids need to be taught if they are to not learn the hard way
Glad he said "Just kidding" after that fancy quadruple looper cast, or whatever he called it. I was about to pack it in right there!
Thanks
Great video!

This is gonna be a complete masterclass.
Just got a add for a masterclass. As i read this.
21:43 the kid got caught in a tree 😂
That looks like me anytime I go fishing
Oh man, I busted a gut at that, hahaha!
''I bet it's a lot easier than you think''
The kids turns around at the same time. Hahaha.
Oh my god, it's not even subtle. He turns around like, "Uhhhh... what do I do?"
laughs, he sure got a tree!
Kid stuck in the tree at the end was funny 😂
Great video
Another fantastic video
How long do you leave the fly out on the water before you recast it?
Very enjoyable.
He reminds me of the guy from the New Yankee workshop TV show from years ago
It get a bit pricey after a while !
that is very helpful

5-6 would be light for casting pike flies. 5-6 would be good for chub. 5-6 is best for trout and chub. cheers

How much clear line would you need for a medium sized river?
I'm sold!!!!
What starter set up should I buy?

There's a snob factor that brings some into the sport and pushes some away.
@ 6:32 Thats my great great aunt on the left!
JHEB23 I care
Incredible video!! Tom feels like a grandpa to me lol.
21:43 , that kid in the background might have been having some troubles lol
Fly fishing for someone with an addictive personality like myself is dangerous. I love it though
such a cute video
Did anybody see the bear behind him at 0:32
21:43 has me laughing pretty hard
:30 just casually fishing across the river from a bear
Happens alot in some places, like the Skeena River in northern BC. Good observation
I saw it in a 70,S movie
Learning how to fly fish fun but hard
kept the fish out the water rather too long though at 5.16
agreed, wont happen again
"there's another volunteer" 🤫
Safety first! Where is the eye protection Tom?
the potential for kids to accidently hook someone when casting should be part of the discussion
agreed
As you can see the bo at the end, is not easy :)
then there is euro nymphing. there your weight is flys :D
I remember the day I invented fly fishing
