It's too bad Duluth Canvas no longer makes tents. I've been using one of their Col. Whelan tents for more than 20 years and love it. I use it spring and fall when the bugs are hovering. Great for winter camping. I bought a second one with a stove sleeve, married it to my first Whelan, and it's been great for winter camping. I'll soon be setting it up, with the wood stove, for Santa and Mrs. Claus for a December program. Fabulously versatile.
I like Whelens. I use a Deer Creek Wilderness Outfitters Oilskin tarp for now, but if I did move up to a more structured shelter, having a longer term stay in mind for poor conditions, I'd go with a Bakers Tent which is like a hybrid between an open tarp and a Whelen. GREAT video. Thanks for posting it.
Yes, it is set up a bit low, but we've had ours even a bit lower in a bad blizzard. I made mine following the plan in Whelen's book using heavier coated ripstop nylon which is lighter than the canvas if you're going to pack it up a mountain. One change I did make was to shorten those side flaps of the awning and fasten them to the body of the leanto with Velcro. I've used mine for 25 years, but once the temperature drops around -20 you spend more time looking for firewood than you do elk or moose.
+Kyle Berry That sounds like a cool setup with modifications you made. I know what you mean about looking for fire wood, I feel the same way, you almost have to go in and cut stack all the wood you think you will need for hunting season ahead of time so that you can focus on the hunt. Thanks for great comment. Jason
Jason, Known Bob Beckel, Beckel Canvas for over 30 years. He made our tents back when we were guiding. Makes good product for a reasonable price. Nice to see their product still out there.
Nice. Ive got that shelter from Beckel in nylon for backcountry trips. Its so versatile. I use It for solo car camping trips as well but I bring my cot.
Awesome tent Jason. One of my favorite historical designs. Some things were just done so well back in the day. And Casey can't take it down and make a bench out of it this time. Great video all the way around.
Jason, once you had your lean to all set up, it sure looked cozy! It might be a bit too much work for a lazy guy like me, but you were rewarded with wonderful comfort! I greatly admire your videography. The emerging morning light with appropriate music was most tasteful and engaging! Thanks for a great production!
The more I see of a Whelan tent, the more I'm inclined to get one. Looks to be you could make a super shelter with it. That Katanaboy was sure doing its job. For me, I think this might be one of your best videos from a camera point of view. Really well done. Thanks for sharing. Be safe.
+radicaljoe I think I am really going to like this tent for sure and the Katanaboy really is working well for me. I appreciate the comment on the camera work, I got some new gear that helped me get better shots with camera and I hope videos will only get better from here. Jason
+SwedishOutdoor Thanks, I really enjoyed that night out and look forward to spending many more nights in it, I cut some poles for it yesterday so I plan to setup a bit more traditional next time. Jason
Man what a nice set up that is! Fantastic job on the video too with the music and camera angles and all. I don't have much time for outdoors lately and just like you I think it's great to take these little ten minute vacations.
+briargoatkilla Yeah, I am really liking this setup so far, and I am hoping to get to use it a lot here in the future. Thanks for comments on the video production it always makes me happy when people appreciate the effort I put into my videos. Jason
+Yankee Woodcraft Thanks I appreciate that I do my best, it has always been my intention with my channel to excite people about the outdoors so it very nice to get a comment like this. Jason
+PAUL WOOLRICH I actually slept really nice, I actually shot a little segment but chose not use it. This silky is awesome I am really happy with it at this point. Jason
No fire needed with those two heaters with tails ;-) I really like the old stuff & look forward to seeing it in person. If your up for doing an archery101 class I'll bring my crap
+Taromovies Swiss Bushcraft Thanks Taro I am glad you enjoyed it, I am really liking the tent I think it is going to fun to use through out the winter. Jason
Very nice tent, and video of you putting it up ! I would like to ask what model and maker of your survival belt style knife! A lot of your viewers are the same channels I enjoy watching, plus your shout out channels! Thank you for sharing
+joesneon No problem, Joe. I don't know I never weighed it I really don't plan on packing in with it, though I might use it in canoe if I ever get one. Jason
Great video man. I've been thinking about that Beckel Canvas lean for almost a year now there's just not much info on it. Thanks for sharing! Look forward to the review!
+HatchetJack Glad you enjoyed the video. So far I am very impressed with it, it is made from good quality Sunforager canvas and all the seams are sealed and well stitched and you can't beat the price, mine cost a bit more because I had them extend the back wall but it was still cheaper than the competition. Jason
nice job on this video, very relaxing, and chicken, and bacon....can't go wrong. Where you live is so very different than what I am used to...looks awesome. Joe's Neon is an awesome dude.
+JoeRobinetBushcraft Thanks Joe and glad you enjoyed it. I just got done watching several of your videos really enjoying your channel lots of trip videos which are the type of videos I like. Jason
Nice setup, must of been where you were when you texted me to head out... Man life has been crazy, wish I could get out more, but I am slammed... I will just live through you can Casey... LOL Great filming...
+Central Oregon Survival Network yep, that is where I was at when I texted you, I hope you can at least squeeze some time to meet up with everyone at the desert camp. Jason
+The Wooded Beardsman The old timers used put cheese cloth over them to keep the mosquitoes out back in the day, but still for me I chose this for winter time use only so I can keep a fire out in front an not have to worry about getting a bunch burn holes in it and we don't have mosquitoes in winter here. Jason
Primal Outdoors Good call. That's actually a good option for the winter/fall here as well. Mostly I just gear up with heavier sleeping bags. But that's pretty cool too. Might give it a shot sometime. Be romantic with the wife too :)
Nice video well done! J Kelly Nolan also has a Whelen tent video and he is in NY. mind sharing how you got your audio so clear in the main part but when you showed the ending bit it was more hollow sounding. Audio is always a struggle for me. Just starting to work with post processing effects myself.
+Alpha Whisky Adventures Well audio is definitely a challenge I actually don't use the audio from my main camera because it tends to pick camera noises, I use the audio from my Garmin Virb XE, but if you watch the ending bit again you will notice I was shutting off the Garmin so I only had the audio from my Nikon DSLR to use. Also you probably noticed there was a lot more hum when Casey was talking and that was because I had the Garmin further away from him so I really had to crank the volume so you could hear what he said. Jason
Jason- GREAT video!!! Did you mention where you got the Whelen from? What was the price? Had looked at getting one and only found one place that had them (Tentsmiths) that I had heard good things about... Please keep the videos coming!!!
+backyardmeat This will be the setup I will take when we go out for our annual spring trip, no, I have had that truck for awhile I just don't have the Toyota anymore, long story I will explain the next time we get together. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Jason
Nice video Jason, very relaxing. I like that tarp, is it lighter than the tarp you made and soaked in linseed oil?? it does look light! Great job, hope all is well with you! Tim
Primal Outdoors Thanks for the quick response. Did I hear your friend say you guys are from Bend Oregon? I will be moving up there this year. What a coincidence, near Reddington I think. Hey, Jason. Great TH-cam Channel. I'm a subscriber. Just want to ask a quick question about your Whelen. You mention they extended its backwall to 7 ft (from 6). You're referring to the width, not the depth, right? Thanks.
How long does it take you to edit a 11 minute video? You are going to end up with a show of your own 1 day or on a show...Tent looked like you had plenty of room for you and the dogs...Good to see the Coyote make a appearance...Where the heck has Todd been? Hope all is good...

Wow, seemed like a sudden jump up in quality of cinematography on this one. Good video. Great feel.
Nice setup, You will enjoy the whelen for years to come................
+ben terwellen I believe I will if I take good care of it should take care of me for a long time.

Why do Central Oregon bush crafters wear sidearms. Not common in other parts of US and Canada. Enjoy your videos very much!
Sweet, wouldn't work for the monster mosquitoes we have around here though!

+Tim's Bushcraft and Outdoors I haven't actually weighed this tarp but my guess is no, but I plan to use this for the most part with my vehicle.
Nice camp. Relaxing. What oz canvas is that? Will check out that Whelen. I just got a small Silky saw, what size Silky is that!?
+James Carmean It 10oz duck canvas treated with sunforager really good stuff. That was Silky Katanaboy 19 inch blade.
Jason
