One of your best videos, absolutely loved it. I'm growing to dislike my kit. it's like sleeping on a crisp packet, in a body bag, in a zipped up box. It's not camping its detached from nature, everything is synthetic. Really made me think this has 👍
Sincerely appreciate your kind words Kevin and like yourself i'm mesmerised with Steves work and his approach to kit. As well as watching this video, filming this spun my mind into a thousand different directions as to what I want to do with my own kit moving forward. All being well i'll be filming lots more with Steve moving forward and zoning into all the many facets we covered in this broader video ~Peace~
Steve is a man after my own heart, just cant believe he is only 30mins away from me, ive had a patern for the Weelan shelter for a few years, i really should make one. Keep it up Zed. 👍🏼
All gear familiar here in "Northern Tier States"/ Eastern Border States with Canada. Wanigan is an "Algonkin" language phylum word, or Anishinaabe (Ojibwe). The Ojibwe word means "a hole dug in the ground". I have 3 DYI wanigan, of different sizes, sized for # of people in group, or duration of trip. The first wanigan I made is the largest, and is my "Coffee Table" in Living Room. The lid can be 'inverted'/flipped and has a backgammon board inscribed and painted on it. Nice informative video. Good to see someone in UK who has 'adopted' our type of gear. Thanks for the great video. Respect Mr. Zed.
I really appreciate the insights and for the native wording too, here in the UK we do not have a direct connection to that way of living as well as the history, everything we learn is from books, etc. However guys like Steven have a deep admiration for the ways of the natives and to honour them in his work. Many thanks once again for the kind words and for watching thank you ~Peace~
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video! Thanks, Steve and Zed, for putting this together. I love the romance of older kit and how it can be enjoyed outside, particularly that of the 1800s period. Brilliant! 🙏🏻
Colonel Townsend Whelen, an early 20th Century American Army outdoor specialist, was noted for minimalist shelter systems in all sorts of weather. Thanks for showing this fine one, especially suited for canoe travelers since it can be erected on paddles. I have never had good luck with even the best cotton fabrics in heavy rains. As Mr. Le Say points out, drying requires a hanging loft. I stored mine loosely folded on shelving, where it became a fine home for mice.
Indeed i'm familiar with this style of tarp but didn't know too much about it, what I like about it is the versatility of it and how small it compacts down too. Sorry to hear your mice have taken up residence in yours! ~Peace~
Fantastic video, talented guy! By the way, that knot is called an "adjustable grip hitch" , my favorite tensioning hitch. I like it better than the taught line hitch which is more commonly used.
Like the wooden gear box...I have some Cypress lumber I plan to eventually craft one from. I think I would make some harness design where it came up over one shoulder and across the chest...like a sling pack. Myself, I'd prefer that to the weight stress on the neck.
Some nice bit of kit there, maybe not all for me (not that much of a canoér), but the rest looked most definitely interesting (and well made ^^ ) ... tnx for sharing a lovely day ~ peace !
Thanks guys for the great video, loads of inspiration. Where does Steve get his info from on all this stuff - especially thinking about a pattern for the shelter - but it must take a lot of work to source all the knowledge and it can't be readily available.
Steve does most of his research from books and also just throwing himself into just doing it through trial and error. Like you rightly said the information is not readily available so it does take a lot of time to collate and sort through the little information that is out there. Sincerely appreciate the kind words and for watching Les ~Peace~
Hello this was a lovely video. I would like to inquire about the Whelen shelter. What are the dimensions and what kind of fabric is it made of? Does the one seen on video come from a supplier or is it home made? All my best Juan.
Steven what is the carving tool called? And how is made? Thank you this video was cool, this style of box would adapt well and fit on my donkey’s pack saddle!
Hiya Zed, do you have any clue or idea why Mike (MCQ) 's account has been suspended? I just can't imagine him doing anything that's against the terms of service (as he's probably the nicest and most well considerate Brit that i know, I mean i can see you do something unknowingly naughty or cheeky out of a sense of humor, not so much for Mike), so something truly silly must be going on. Hopes you perhaps have contact and/or any idea, as that message makes no clue to me.
@@dutchcourage7312 Yes, sorry, I just didn't want to speak for someone else. His account was compromised, two-factor authentication changed, mobile devices changed, and the account has been closed by TH-cam. Mike has been in touch with them so hopefully it'll get resolved soon.
As mentioned his account was hacked using a sophisticated system, he's currently in the process of contacting TH-cam / Google to help get his account back ~Peace~

Hi Juan, Steven made this entirely himself from heavy duty canvas ~Peace~
any ideas were to find a pattern for a welan ?
There are loads of them online to download for free, just do a Google search buddy ~Peace~
