- The 2000s, often criticized by horror fans for lacking quality releases, much like past decades such as the 1990s and 1980s. Despite some bad movies, there were also hidden gems like The Strangers, The House of the Devil, and Brotherhood of the Wolf. People tend to romanticize the past and criticize more recent horror films. In 2005, a variety of horror movies came out, including "The Devil's Rejects" (good), "Hostel" (interesting), and "Cry Wolf" (terrible). In the midst of this, the director of the excellent 2002 film Dog Soldiers released his second feature, The Descent.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

After thinking about this a lot, I believe that The Descent is my favorite horror movie. Just a perfect movie
Yes! It’s perfect. The story perfect, each character and their development perfect, the ending (long version) perfect. It’s also a pretty badass movie, but is still bittersweet. The soundtrack perfect.
Yeah you're right it's severely underrated. Just a great idea with strong characters and storylines.
Nothing particularly ground breaking or novel but not everything has to be and this is a great example of that.
I was pleasantly surprised when I first watched it as I stumbled across it and had no idea what to expect.
Still scares the crap out of me to this day, especially the Bluray in the dark, uncut edition of course. Having to make a "happy ending" for the US these days is an ironic joke..lol
One of those films you never get tired of watching. Honestly, even if the creatures were not in the film, I could easily just watch the plight of the women being lost in the caves. To make that so tense and scary was brilliant by Mr Marshall......but then switching to full on horror with the creatures.....perfect.
This is how you do a film. Each character is interesting, plays a part and you care for each. Music score is great and the original ending is perfect. I wish I had gone to the cinema for this.
Shame what happened to Neil Marshall. He definitely has talent. Just kind of lost his way with films from Doomsday onwards.
The blooper reel where are the creature was dancing in the cave was just as entertaining as the movie itself.
😂
Loved this one! I took a few friends and they went in completely blind, not knowing anything. By the end, they had a full experience. They loved it
Great movie and people even briefly mentioning Brotherhood of the Wolf is pretty great, too
My favorite movie of all time. I really wish this movie would get a 4K restoration release.
I First Saw The Descent On TUBI Two Years Ago And I Was Like My Goodness This Movie Has Packed A Punch.
Only scary thing is the claustrophobia
One of the best horror movies in 2005. A combination of Alien and Pitch Black
I LOVE this movie! The original ending is haunting and perfectly bleak.
Great film werent expecting much but the dread of being underground they nailed it
The ultimately deadly girl trip.
True
Nah that's when the women's soccer team played 15 year old boys and got smoked😂
One of my favorites .. remembering watching this at the movies.. when it came out.. & it always stuck in my head.. the voyage of the Demeter definitely took inspiration from the design of the crawlers from this movie.. definitely a horror masterpiece ❤
The two endings in this film were as much talked about as the movie itself, I loved the UK ending, but unfortunately, the US ending led to the sequel.
MyAnna Buring was also in the Twilight films and The Witcher on Netflix. Seeing her so young in this is Awesome
Commenting this before having watched the upload in full, but anyway, one of the great things about The Descent is how well it crafts tension and frightens the viewer even before the monsters show up.
It's an all-time masterpiece.
This was on my list for so long by the time I finally watched it last month the whole genre had already copied it for years. Still holds up imo
For the sequel they should have focused more on the crawlers hunting above ground. Maybe a small town or acreage gets besieged by the crawlers on a cold moonless night?
Dog soldiers was an incredibly good Wearwolf movie.
I don't like how often people compare this movie to the Cave. Both are completely different movies that came out the same year. The only thing in common they have is a cave ( in the cave is underwater so even the cave is different.) And a monster which are completely diffetent. In here the monster went the Darwin route, and in the Cave it is caused by a parasite.
The Cave was less horror (although it did have certain horror elements) and more action-adventure
Underrated. Not many people like this movie
Beth didn’t deserve her fate
Man I loved these movies , loved both , yes I remember I went to the theater and saw this , this movie was fuckn scary when I 1st saw it back in 2006 , the 2nd one however even tho it went straight to direct video dvd , not better the 1st one but the 2nd was just as enjoyable...The Decent movies were criminally underrated great horror flicks
Thank you for your awesome content. First I didn't like this movie but after another watch i actually liked it. It was fun movie.
The uk ending is perfect and the sequel was wholly unnecessary.
A great movie, unrelenting and very well crafted!
"Chicks with Picks"! 😂🤣🤣👍
Love the descent!
One of the best horror films
There are few movies like this one, on the same vibe: Feast, The Hills Have Eyes remake, Wrong Turn 2
What an awesome movie.
The 2000s had some really good horror movies. You left out a few.
Give us dog soldiers 2
I never considered the 2000s worse than the 90s, tbh.
Why does the narrator of this video sound like one of Mike Myers' SNL characters from back in the day??? 😂
Good movie didn't need a sequel and Juno got just what she deserved.
I love this film so much. I think it has been secretly influencial ever since. It's a shame this director couldn't do anything that good afterwards
Both movies are fkin 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I recommend the watch through with the director, very insightful! great fucking movie
Can you do a video for Ben Wheatley's Kill List (2011), please?
Awesome movie 😈
Loved it. Somehow disturbing
Idk man, Georgie accent might take over as the favorite narrator.
WTF happened to Neil Marshall's HELLBOY?
Clearly, he was the right director for the wrong movie
Great film, there is no other like it for it's claustrophobia , tension and dread. One of the few films that actually gets to me
If I remember correctly Dead Man's Shoes came out the same year , another stand out low budget British film.
I also quite like The Cave a higher budget American film kinda similar to the Descent
This and eden lake is one of the best pathe film
My second fave horror film after Halloween. Blew me away when I first saw this. Just don't watch the crappy American softie version.
Just gonna skip over Wolf Creek and the Grindhouse double feature huh? Wow.😕
Sad the sequel was so awful.
Jourdie love.
The Devils Rejects was garbage. If that was good, then so was Cry Wolf as that was arguably better. The Devils Rejects is only popular due to the shock value at the time, the strangeness, and Rob Zombie. Overall its trash.
Double down on that! There isn't an original bone in his body.
🤘
I'm not a fan of THE DESCENT. There's an unlikability factor because of the way the women are depicted...namely, they couldn't work together they came up against the crawlers. The thing that makes DOG SOLDIERS endearing is the camaraderie amongst the soldiers when the werewolves strike, but camaraderie amongst the women isn't there when the going gets tough.
respectfully I disagree. While they have inner conflict Juno tries her best for Holly and she also goes out of her way to find sarah. They're up against monsters, we can't expect them to have full group cohesiveness. With respect to the dog soldiers, they're soldiers. They tend to be more group-oriented.
The descent is better then dog soldiers....doomsday was real good too.
I didnt really like this movie
I didn't either!!...
Just watched this for the first time last month. Terrible movie
cry wolf was good😂
Should have casted men, the girl thing just didn’t work, unless you watch it for political reasons. If you disagree with my comment just admit you want to be fed propaganda rather than be entertained, I respect honesty
Ok incel. What did your mother do to you as a child?
Ha ha. I know you're trolling as this film was made long before all the political bs and only someone trying to bait someone would say the cast of women didn't work. I hate woke ideology and what films have become as much as the next sane person but you know this film probably worked better with an all female cast......none of which were Mary Sue's.
Someone forgot to take their meds today
its 20 years old
@@weemonk23V true this movie came out before the Girl Boss powertrips filled cinema. its statement wasn’t, “girls are better than boys,” if anything it was just a popcorn horror film that might have some themes of deadening friendships and moving on from them when they reach their end. thats what I got from it, which has nothing to do with gender or PC. there should be more movies like this w/o woke cringe lol
What happened to Neil Marshall? After this, he made pure junk. Doomsday was a mess. Hellboy has putrid. And The Lair was a total zero. His carrer died after two movies.
