What made it scary for me was the thought that Frank could go from 0 to 100 at any setting, any moment, no matter who he was with. When Anna dropped the mannequin hand in his shop, I thought for sure he was gonna lose his mind right then and there. Great movie.
@@seandavis9320 There isn't even that much CGI blood. You could stop talking out of your ass and watch the Blood & Gore BTS video. Also, it is "somewhere near the caliber of the original". You're literally making shit up to try and disparage the remake, so you're just making your mind up purely based off of nostalgia. Your opinion...is meaningless and biased.
This movie came out on my birthday May 3rd 2013...was one of favorite horror remake movies and one of the best made movies hands down because of the POV... the original Maniac WILL ALWAYS BE a classic... !!!
I haven't seen the original yet but the remake is absolutely brilliant! Horror films are notoriously underappreciated by critics and this is no exception. Now for the original...
Even my ex-girlfriend loved the movie and she's usually not a fan of overly violent movies. She even saw the character of Frank as mostly likeable, she felt sorry for him but she didn't want him to succeed.
A few of my personal favorite Elijah Wood movies that you didn't mention are The Faculty, Cooties, and I Don't Want to Live On This Planet Anymore (or something like that, it's on Netflix). I'm so happy Elijah and Daniel Radcliffe, and Rupert Grint are still getting steady work. Rupert did have a show I really liked that got cancelled for some reason. I hate that. Oh, and also... DANIEL RADCLIFFE FOR THE NEW WOLVERINE!!! Tell me he wouldnt be perfect, and I'll show you a liar! He's short, he's gotten pretty freaking ripped, and he can pull off those sideburns
I enjoyed the movie, especially the POV shots in some parts of the movie where we are inside the killer's mind. The ending was very sad and heartbreaking.
Maniac for me is the best remake since The Blob and I even prefer it to the original, (of which I'm also a big fan of) and Woods is great in it. It would be in my top five remakes of all time, just a really pleasant surprise for me.
Ted Bundy said the experience of killing was like watching yourself in a movie. I really liked when the POV changes when Frank kills the girl in the parking lot, it reminded me of that quote. Overall was a good twist on the slasher genre, but I think they could have done much more with the concept of being inside a killer's mind. I hope to see the original soon. Thanx!!!
I am willing to be completely wrong about this: but, this movie's influence is immensely underappreciated. Its trailer alone started the fog horn craze that gripped film trailers for a decade (Dredd, Christopher Nolan), many of the images the trailer focused on for Evil Dead Rise felt (no pun intended) ripped right from this movie's trailer. without this film, we would not have Hardcore Henry, The David Gordan Greene Halloweens, and Spree.
I actually wasn’t fond of this remake by far. I hated the first person pov opposed to the guerrilla style camera work from the original. The gore was decent enough and Elijah Wood’s performance was good but Joe Spinell’s was truly haunting and gave me a true maniac. Plus in the original New York feels very much like a character itself offering the gritty and slum that made the environment almost an accomplice to the murders. Accompanied with the chilling score the original was true art. This movie isn’t bad just when it comes to remakes this one isn’t a favorite and to me is easily forgettable.
I like this remake and prefer it over the original I found it more grounded and disturbing It's kind of realistic and believable to happen I loved the originality of the killer's POV Acting is on point and visually is pretty dark as well as pretty mundane
I saw this maybe a year ago and really enjoyed it. The story shown from his point of view worked very well and the use of mirrors still meant Wood could be seen in the role.
It kinda felt like found footage. Tho I will say this This movie made Frank More Sympathetic. Someone you want to see have a normal life and move on from this killing spree. Sadly it doesn't happen.
I Saw This On TUBI A Few Months Ago This Remake Of The Original William Lustig Classic In My Opinion I Love Both Versions And I Have The Original On DVD.
It Sucked. I was actually anxious to see it, because Elijah Wood as a serial killer was intriguing to me. But once I realize it was a remake, and the story fell flat on its ass. I lost interest. Wood's best performance as a serial killer was "Kevin" in "Sin City." Not this hot garbage. And there's clowns on here saying its their favorite horror movie of all time?? They must definitely work for rotten tomatoes. Because they have absolutely no clue WTF they're talking about.
This is probably the best remake that has ever been done. Made with such love for the original Lustig film.

Definitely in the tier of "The remake is better than the original, while also elevating the source."
Nowhere near the caliber of the original but it's decent. Too much CGI blood.

I love the original more but both are some my favorites , me and my girlfriend love 80s version and the new york ripper as well !
I really enjoyed this film and watch it often

Some horror remakes do rival the original films.. examples: The Thing, The Blob and Maniac imo

Elijah Wood was a perfect serial killer his performance was amazing
My favorite horror film of all time. Brutal yet heartbreaking.
I loved the original, had no idea there was a remake!
Never seen the original but I love this movie! It’s creepy, bloody and has a GREAT performance by Elijah Wood.
This movie was gold. So creepy.
This remake ensorcelled me! The pov aspect was brilliant imo.

The Horror is unreal because the Terror is insane

Wood's small part in "Sin City", was disturbing. Is it more so?

Great Film also loved the soundtrack
Is a finally a remake that's better than the original
The role was originally offered to John C. Reilly which I wish we had gotten. Wood did the best he could but Reilly would have nailed it.

Personally I love both the original and the remake
They should re-release it as a VR feature
All time classic imo
I didn't mind it, but I also kind of forgot about it.
This was unexpected. I LOVE this movie! Elijah is legit terrifying.
An amazing horror movie

Neither are worth watching. Boring.
Although I prefer the original, I reckon the remake is a good 'un!
And has Q Lazzarus in the soundtrack, so that's good. 🙂
When Frodo Baggins becomes darker than Sauron.
Well this isn't Elijah's first time playing a psychopath.
I need to see this
🤘
Most of the time it didn't remain true to the original release.
Wes Bentley should have played Frank.
It's a good remake but I still prefer the original.
Great film 😊
I think its a good movie. the gore did not bother me. I thought it did a good job of being more than just a violent gory movie.
❤🎉
Sanity was restored? /snerk
Love this remake
Terrible Terrible remake, probably one of the worst horror remakes ever made.

Its a great movie you just dont have taste
Love this film. Probably my favourite slasher
