A few years before I joined the Navy I watched Saving Private Ryan with my granddad who drove tanks in Korea for the Marines. He was quiet through the whole thing, looking contemplative but when Tom Hanks is injured towards the end of the flick and shoots at the tank with his pistol Papa smiled and said "it doesn't matter if they have a bazooka or a sling shot, everybody shoots at the tank."
Never talked to an actual tanker or tanker adjacent person so I have a question. Is small arms fire ever an issue to tanks? Does it ever cause fear/stress, does it damage optics or jam turret rings etc? Did your grand daddy ever say anything about the topic?
@@lemons1559 It was (and is) a common practice to fire towards the vision blocks, usually with machine guns or other automatic weapons. The glass in the periscope is bulletproof, but you can try cracking the glass, rendering it unusable.
@@agp11001 Between making my earlier comment about this and today, I saw a wee WW2 documentary about how small arms infantry could disrupt tank assaults. It was pretty cool how effective even a rifle is at spooking tankers.
I've only met one WWII veteran. And he was at Pearl Harbor during and after the attack.

My grandpa Fred DesRosier was a Marine Scout Sniper in 2nd Marine Div. He was part of several beach landings in the pacific including Tarawa, his elite unit actually swam into the island at night a day before the landing, and posted guard and protection for the landing. They were also the first to have bloched cammies and later the first troops to take over Nigasaki after the bomb. He survived through ptsd, malaria, shrapnel and atomic bombs and lived to be 91 passing in 2016.

When I saw "Saving Private Ryan", I was sitting next to 2 WW II vets. All 3 of us were in tears that whole opening scene. Me, out of pride for what they endured; Them? Probably PTSD. I still am moved by that movie. Bought them a few rounds afterwards

I've worked alongside Scottish troops that, whilst in Division, weren't elite, some were detached..most of them went into horrible situations, mostly Northern Ireland and the former Yugoslavia. They told me a trick for surviving interrogation - "You won't, it's a game of time."

Additionally, Coast Guardsmen saved over 400 soldiers and marines wounded that day. No sailor, marine or soldier worth his salt would not have this knowledge offhand. I watched WWII vets walk out of Saving Private Ryan because it was too real of a reminder of D-day. When the sniper took out the first enemy in the bunker I stood up and cheered. Great movie , new found respect for all who served after seeing the movie.

I think some European forces use the scar 16, but not sure what nation or what units use them as of today. The Norwegian special forces actually uses Diemaco C8 SFW despite being told to switch to the HK416

Jocko, thanks for the description of the Tarrawa invasion and the subsequent developments which led to underwater demo and seal teams. My Uncle Criss was one of those Marines who had to wade across the coral. He lost his sight that day, but had a very great life nonetheless.

I had a family member who passed years ago. He was on Normandy. The soldiers were throwing up because of nerves. However there was another factor. Apparently the Navy were starving the Army soldiers not out of cruelty but because of a lack of food. So come D Day they fed the Army soldiers and most of over ate due to hunger. So on top of everything else, they are puking because a lot of them over ate been not having nutritions in days.
how did they feed them on D-Day if they didn't have food the other days? also why would there be a food shortage....they would just go back to Britain and get food....which the soldiers must've packed, they weren't on the ships for too long to cross to France

If you are in good health and really determined you can train yourself in different techniques used my the military. I have a nice Army Navy store close to me and they sell absolutely everything. I bought numerous books on booby traps and guerilla warfare. It teaches you how to crawl through swamps and how to hide yourself and build IEDs to counter a military invasion. These skills will carry you through a war and save your life. These field manuals seems like just basic knowledge, but you would be amazed at how effective they are. They know what they are talking about.

That's pretty unrealistic.
Jocko just walked in to a prisoner of war camp and asked to be tied up. The Commandant shot himself rather than be the one to tie him up.
