I feel it was sexism and men not understanding how deep Barbie actually way. It also is interesting that after discussing the patriarchy they nominated Ryan and not Margo. They learned nothing from the movie 🙄

This was extremely disappointing because there had been a conversation around me, a question of "Who do you think is a director that has no objectively bad film in their filmography?"
And Greta Gerwig was someone who immediately came to mind for me.
I'm consistently wowed by her vision as a director and as a screenwriter, Barbie in particular left me a bit misty eyed and thinking "This is someone that sees through the absurdity of the world we've built to judge and control people, but is inviting us to laugh at ourselves and recognize its a 2 way street of hurt if you dont compromise to help erase these norms."
A huge chunk of the movie is rightfully and healthily pushing feminist views, but also shows through Barbieland that at the end of the day, gender superiority hurts humanity no matter who holds a higher place, and you shouldn't be fated to live a specific way because of the way this world has been shaped for thousands of years.
Conveying that through a medium like Barbie, that's a testament to Greta's genius as a filmmaker and her heart as a human being. We need people like her as recognized leaders of the craft going forward because I'd argue she's accessible to the wide market in a way thats brilliant without being pretentious. She's someone that knows how to make authentic films for both the average viewer and the film lovers in an age where they scramble to algorithms and box office statistics to figure out the next move.
She's incredible, Greta Gerwig absolutely deserves all the recognition and love.

Wow, you've really nailed it with your thoughts on Greta Gerwig's direction. I totally get what you mean about getting misty-eyed during Barbie - that was a whole experience, wasn't it? It's like she's got this magic lens on the world and the absurdities we all just take for granted. Thanks for dropping such a gem of a comment. Makes me want to grab a coffee and chat movies with you! Who else is on your director's A-list?

@PerformancePerspective if we could ever make that happen, that would be a great pleasure and honor! Genuinely enjoy your insight immensely. As far as other A-list directors, hmm. I feel like I could be here all day! Your coverage of Fosse brought back memories of how much I loved his work. Pete Docter is another one I think continues to tap into the human soul (no pun intended) tremendously. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert I feel have breached the bizarre to tell some of the most profound and creative stories I've ever seen. Denis Villeneuve is really captivating. Love what Emerald Fennell continues to do. I don't know, I have so many, I'd be here for months praising different directors!

@PerformancePerspective Oh, Edgar Wright and Paul Thomas Anderson, had to get those out 😄

@thegreatpretender1026, isn't Edgar Wright's range just mind-blowing? From of 'Sing' to the zombie laughs in 'Shaun of the Dead', and the comic book vibe of 'Scott Pilgrim vs. the World' - he's good at genre-hopping. I've seen a couple of these, but I've yet to dive into Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography. And Fosse's work on 'All That Jazz' - how did I miss that he directed it? It's these discoveries I find fascinating.

@PerformancePerspective I think Wright is a modern day Spielberg, absolutely. You just see him effortlessly cover all these bases and in a way that really captivates you in multiple different ways. I'm always excited whenever I hear his name pop up for a project. And I know exactly what you mean! Growing up, I experienced a lot of masterpieces, but the names slipped by me. And so I love waking up and uncovering who is responsible for what, and that's been the gem of this channel for me! It brings a lot of light and credit to people who deserve to be talked about so seriously, thank you for all that you do!
