‘Anti-patriarchy nonsense’: Piers Morgan rips into Barbie after Oscars snub

- Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan has ripped into the Barbie movie after actress Margot Robbie and director Greta Gerwig were snubbed from the Oscars in their respective categories.
The film was still nominated for eight awards, including Best Picture.
Actor Ryan Gosling, who plays ‘Ken’ in the film, expressed his disappointment at the Academy Awards after he was nominated for his supporting role.
“I thought the movie was awful; I thought it was man-hating, patronising, anti-patriarchy nonsense from start to finish,” Mr Morgan said.
“I didn’t think Margot Robbie, who I love and think is a brilliant actress, was very good in this.
“I thought he (Ryan Gosling) was the best of a bad bunch of acting performances.”
He added that Ms Gerwig is a good director but questioned why people thought she deserved a nomination for best director.

The logic of the Barbie Oscar Nomination Complaint: 'Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were snubbed due to sexism and the patriarchy'.
Not only was the Barbie movie itself nominated for 8 other awards, 2 of which, if won, would go to Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig themselves (best screenplay and best film), but America Ferrera was also nominated for best supporting actress for the same film. These two facts greatly undercut the ludicrous idea there is some sort of sexist plot against the movie. Also, complaining because Margo Robbie was not nominated for best actress... when five other WOMEN were nominated for best actress... in a category that exists and is meant to celebrate females, again is laughable and undercuts the idea this has to do with apparent 'misogyny'. Lastly, Gerwig wasn't nominated for best director but a woman named Justine Treat who directed Anatomy of a Fall was. So the claim here is that Gerwig and Robbie were denied nominations due to a sexist conspiracy even though they both were nominated in other categories...And other women...who are not Gerwig and Robbie...were nominated in the exact categories you think they were denied. Hahah
Now obviously trying to connect this to sexism and patriarchy is another delusional and desperate attempt by very bored and very shallow people to feel persecuted because they don't know how to find any meaning in life except through a false personal narrative of victimization.

This year the actress category was excellent: From Sandra Hüller to Anette Benning, all of them better deserving than Robbie! There are only five places! And in the director category we have excellent Justine Triet, her film looks like a jewel before the stone Barbie...
They both got nominations in different categories and they have had multiple nominations and wins at different award shows for well over a month now. How much glory and praise and attention do these people need?! The Golden Globes gave them a goodie bag worth half a million dollars. Seriously, stop feeling sorry for these women. They live elite lives that none of us will ever experience. Please bring Ricky Gervais back to the hosting role of these ceremonies.
Margot is a great actress but barbie was a beautiful girl playing a beautiful girl. Easy. No effort needed except for actually taking the movie seriously at all.

That movie itself is not worth being nominated let alone any actor who participated in it. The boxoffice is not what defines art nor it's the political agenda. Piers is miserable. Barbie was a billion dollar success. It told a classic hero's journey in a perfectly realised storyworld shaped by generations of little girls' imaginations. And Ryan Gosling was being collegiate in supporting his co-star and director. Is it high art? No. But is it a well-acted, well-executed comedic story? Absolutely.

Ken was the best written character. The best laughs almost all came from male characters. Gerwig writes men well, it seems. Blame her for Barbie not being better.

The 'Barbie' brand as a movie is regarded as a good-time popcorn flick rather than a serious attempt at cinema. I would add 'The Dark Knight', regarded as one of the greatest comic book films of all-time, and a massive box-office success wasn't nominated for 'Best Picture' back in 2009 (which Barbie has been) neither were Christopher Nolan for 'Best Director' or Christian Bale for 'Best Actor', respectively. Heath Ledger on the other hand was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actor', no controversy or cries over sexism or excluding a genre of film. Just pure hypocrisy imo!

For once i agree: Barbie should never had been a major player and i do not understand that in many ways! Barbie was laying it on way way too thick and it was a turn off and it took me out of the movie. It actually insulted my intelligence for sure. America Ferrera was an ok choice because she was the beating heart of it. Ryan, Margo and Gerwig: overrated!

I suggest you reach out to Greta and Noah( a man) who wrote the film to ask them their intentions here or watch it again, esp. the last scene, where Barbie encourages Ken to find who he is, apart from her. Part of the joke is that it's always been Barbie AND Ken. He felt less than, he felt he didn't exist apart from her gaze, but Barbie tells him he's wrong to think that.

The central character of this film, is a misogynistic male psychopath who relishes in skinning his female victims and in traumatising the young female FBI agent played by Jodie Foster... but the film won the big awards like best director, best picture, best actor and best actress at the Oscars.
But my both my very well educated parents walked out of that film. They thought Silence of the Lambs- arguably the absolute opposite of the film Barbie-was a truly awful film.
Sorry but silence of the lambs is a masterpiece. And no way in hell you thought the central character aka the protagonist was buffalo bill. The protagonist was jodie foster and buffalo bill dies at the end of the movie.

The Wiz was mentioned here already, which was an all black cast version of The Wizard of Oz. And despite the big names in the movie, I didn't care much for it; and I'm black for the record.
