The viaduct was where Eurostar trains moved across the main line to join the Chatham line through Brixton and so on down to Folkestone. I used to love watching them go through Brixton!
I have travelled a number of times between Weymouth and Waterloo which is a journey of around 3 hours depending on the number of stops and found the Standard class seats not comfortable for that length of time. I also used to travel on the Waterloo to Exeter line a lot and the seats in the 159 diesel units were far more comfortable. After a few journeys from Weymouth I now book in advance where possible and pay the extra for travelling in First class which is a much more pleasant journey. The free early morning tea and biscuits has gone now which trims the experience somewhat.
Yeah, you should at least expect some complimentary snacks in First especially for a long journey! And I agree, the 159s are nicer, O absolutely love them. Yes always book in advance, walk up fares are abominable. Having never done the full Weymouth run in one go, I don't know what 3hrs on these is like!
I remember the 4REP+ 4TC's on the Weymouth services.. I also remember the Class 442's that replaced them using the 4REP motors. When they entered service, they had a buffet car in each 5 car unit. In those days Southampton was first stop out of Waterloo..
That must have been much faster than today to get to Bournemouth then😅 but then again, Clapham, Woking and Basingstoke are really key interchanges nowadays.
@@trainlagged They first added Southampton Airport Parkway as first stop, then Winchester. Those other stations were always well served by semi-fast and stopping services. Nowadays on all southern region routes, very few of the old 'express' trains survive..
I am not a huge fan on the SWR livery, I guess it looks alright on the Class 444. I can say though that the 444s are definitely suitable for long distance services rather than the Class 450s. That being said, a great video!
18:24 Eastleigh has a lot of sidings. The one where the 701’s are is called Eastleigh TRSMD and you have Eastleigh East Yard, Eastleigh Arlington and Eastleigh Marshalling sidings. Eastleigh East yard is owned by GBRF and Colas Rail. But sometimes Freightliner, DB cargo , EWS and Network rail use it to store trains.
Thanks! This was shot on GoPro Hero+ (and the end on Honor 9 Lite). Hopefully you like the sound and video quality of my new camera just as much, if not better ! :)
Did you make your connection? Where were you travelling on to? The Merseyrail services from Chester up the Wirral to Liverpool and Southport, Ormskirk & Kirkby are also 3rd rail electrified; I only learnt that when I went from Liverpool to Chester last year. The Brockenhurst to Lymington branch connects with ferries to the Isle of Wight. I'm currently on my first visit there (sailed Portsmouth to Ryde, returning East Cowes to Southampton) but would like to try the Lymington route sometime.
Made it! Was heading for the Swanage bus which I made with about 3/4 mins to spare 😅 Yep! Merseyrail network, to my knowledge, is the only 3rd rail electrified lines in the UK out of Southern England. And yes that's one of the places where ferries depart, the others being the ports you will use. Enjoy your visit on the IOW, it's beautiful!
@@trainlagged is the Glasgow Underground a 3rd rail system? Obviously not National Rail, and narrow gauge. Some lines in the North East were historically 3rd rail electrified, for example Newcastle to Whitley Bay, now part of the Tyne and Wear Metro, but that electrification is long gone.
@@trainlagged I am enjoying the Isle of Wight, although the hotel reminds me of Fawlty Towers 😁. This is the first serious long distance rail trip I've done in the UK in decades. I'd forgotten what I was missing.
Will you be doing a video of the Class 701 Arterios when they do eventually start operating on the suburban services as SWR have ordered new trains to replace the ageing Class 455 and Class 456 units.
SWR need a better train for their long distance routes than the Desiro. Other train operators have the Azumas, Pendolinos or the 68 loco.....but SWR has a 'jazzed up' version of a short distance commuter train basically. Come on SWR - sort it out and give us a decent, fast, luxurious even...long distance train that can rival the Azumas or the Pendolinos.
To be honest, do they really need one? These trains are modern and perfectly comfortable and new trains would be expensive and long to obtain, plus they must be 3rd rail compatible units. I quite like them and I think they're fine for long distances - however, the First Class is a disappointment and should be more of an upgrade compared to Standard Class.
Your use of that lens distorts everything you film. Filming the other platform from the window as you're travelling, 8:40, for example, maks it seem like you're on a roundabout! A pity1
Thanks for the feedback - I've stopped using it now. At the time, I couldn't actually remove that lens since my GoPro didn't have a linear mode. However now that I've got my new camera, I've turned it off. Just a few of my videos left to go out have been filmed with the wide angle.

The BEST trains (except Javelins!) on the S/SWR/SE networks! Great video Ben, can't wait for the next one!
Still got a preference for the 159s😌
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
As others have said, the viaduct was for the Eurostar to reach the south eastern region. It’s called the Linford Curve.
That viaduct was used by the Eurostar trains to get to the lines through Kent
Ah, that's what I though. Thanks for the info!

i'm on the other end of the scale, hated stagecoach and think the new ones look smart

Might be! Was only thinking of National Rail. It could also be 4th rail like the London Underground!
Nice video 📹 👍 👌 👏 😀
Thanks! :)
Good Video!
Thank you!
BTW. You indicate that the station was opened in 1848 but the large concourse dates from a major rebuild in the early 1900’s.
Ah alright - thanks for the precision!☺️

Why not? I'm curious to see how good they will be compared to the 455/456😀
@@trainlagged Indeed ☺️
Apparently there were plans to run class 442’s down to Weymouth again before they were withdrawn.
Maybe. After all it's their longest electric route, so it makes sense. Won't happen now, sadly.
Great video mate. Hope you made your connection at Bournemouth?
I did! Train was about 5 minutes late into Bournemouth so that was fine. Glad you enjoyed!
@@trainlagged That's good then. Oh and by the way I subscribe to your channel 🙂
Clapham Junction is the UK's Busiest
What is the ticket charge from waterloo to dorechester south on SWR
Best to have a look online for that, George. The cheapest when buying in advance is £14.90
It will stop at every station

Need a 4 cig on long distance.

No co
21 mins late is good for SWR considering how unreliable they are
It's the largest delay I've ever had with them, but I have had a fair few... They often get held at Clapham Junction, that station is a nightmare.
