    Joel has said that in this song, he was saying all of that to himself, that it was he that had to be a big shot. For your next Joel song, take your pick between "New York State of Mind", "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", and "Just the Way You Are". Then there are many more good ones after those.

    Billy Joel is a musical chameleon, a talented shape shifter..
    Songs like Rosalinda's Eyes, Summer Highland Falls, Shameless, Say Goodbye To Hollywood, and all the others, it's like he purposefully sets out NOT to be formulaic.
    His motto could be, "Never Repeat Myself".
    Btw, that line in BigShot-
    "You had the Don Perignon in your hand and a spoon up your nose" hit me so hard as 17 year old and was an important message in 1979.
    All my classmates were talking about cocaine, how harmless, safe and fun it was.
    But here's Billy telling me it's not cool and warning me about the dangers in life. I was a Senior in highschool when this song came out (I'm 60 now) and Billy Joel's music helped me in so many ways to understand the world. Sorry to go on and on...
    You know something, I think you two are the cutest couple on TH-cam. Much happiness to you and your wonderful family...
    I really should become a Patron...

    This song is on the "52nd Street" album, which had the defiant "My Life" as the first single. One underrated song on the album is "Zanzibar"--which manages to include a jazz solo. I would also strongly endorse doing his song "Goodnight Saigon" on Memorial Day. It's appropriate, powerful and incredibly poignant because it references those who died in Vietnam.

    Two Billy Joel songs I'd recommend are "Pressure" and "Don't Ask Me Why". Both are really strong songs, but with very different vibes. Fun fact: Billy Joel has an "historic residency" at Madison Square Garden because he has the most lifetime and consecutive performances at the Garden. His performances at the Garden are generally sold out no matter the date or time.

    Billy Joel was one of the greatest artists of the 70s and 80s and early 90s. The reason he was so great is he was so versatile. As you can see in all of the different songs that you’ve already reacted to he knows how to rock, he knows how to do ballads, he knows how to swing, he can get funky, he spans every genre. There aren’t many artists today that you can say that about. You can pretty much take any song off of his greatest hits volumes one through three and do a reaction to those and be blown away by them.

    Every song Billy Joel writes is inspired by a song he heard from his past, on music that cultivated his sense of music. Behind every one of his songs is a story, a lot of the lyrics are biographical or autobiographical.

      I have seen Billy several times in concert and what tended to happen is he will tour when promoting a new album and his set list will consist of his past hit singles plus several of the new songs from his then latest album.
      So, I Go To Extremes will have been played on the Storm Front tour but by the time his next album was being toured, perhaps only We Didn't Start the Fire which was the main hit single from the Storm Front album remained part of his set list, bar maybe a few times when it was mixed up so as Billy and his band did not get bored of the same songs all of the time.

    Nice to see you finally getting to a more typical Billy Joel song that features passions, great vocals and lyrics and strong musical composition, because We Didn't Start The Fire is the worst song he ever wrote, one that makes him cringe, and Piano Man, while great, is quite unlike most of his other work. Joel has some of the best vocal chops in the business with a versatility that is mind-blowing, he writes smart lyrics and composes fantastic songs, and he delivers all of them with passion, from rockers to ballads to songs about real people and real events. Among the many dozens of great songs: Vienna, Zanzibar, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, She's Always a Women, Only the Good Die Young, You May Be Right, New York State of Mind (live), Baby Grand (with Ray Charles), Honesty, The Stranger, Allentown and Goodnight Saigon.

    • @seanscanlon9067

      Not trying to be a dick here but I personally am not sure if there is such a thing as a typical Billy Joel song.
      As far as I am aware too, Billy has only really said that We Didn't Start the Fire does not have much of a melody and is the only song where he has written the words first, in response to turning 40 and as a mental exercise listed in chronological order many of the key events and people in his first 40 years, from 1949 to 1989 after being told by some kids around half his age at the time that nothing historical really happened when Billy was their age.

    • @jonsher7682
      @jonsher7682 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@seanscanlon9067 Billy doesn't have a typical style and instead borrows from musicians who have influenced him whether that be from blues, rock, jazz or singer-songwriters.
      But most of his songs share these attributes: The music is thoughtfully composed and engaging, the lyrics smart, the story-telling stellar, the band tight and powerful, and the lyrics showcase Joel's range and ability to mimic a lot of styles.
      But We Didn't Start The Fire checks off one of those boxes at best; smart lyrics, and lacks all the other qualities of most of Joel's songs.
      I take no offence if you have a different take of course. Cheers.

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonsher7682 I was more suggesting I was not sure if there is such a thing as a typical Billy Joel song, due to the diverse number of genres and/or styles of his songs, such as ballads, bluegrass, blues, classical, country, doo-wop, folk, gospel, jazz, pop, reggae, rock and western.
      And I was just really covering how We Didn't Start the Fire came to be, as it is not a great melody and the chorus started out as a country song initially, but it is clever lyrically and I was just highlighting the story behind why he wrote it.
      I do not really disagree with you on your views of the song though and even if I did, you are more than entitled to hold whatever views you have anyway.

    I highly recommend "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" by Billy Joel. It's one of those songs that keeps surprising you . . . changes up a lot . . . kind of like Bohemian Rhapsody, LOL! It's about someone who meets an old friend in an Italian Restaurant and the lyrics are about their conversation and catching up with each other and reminiscing. It's a favorite. "Goodnight Saigon" is also amazing . . . about the bond between soldiers during Vietnam. It's a very moving song. In fact, at the Kennedy Honors a few years back when they honored Billy Joel, some of the old soldiers helped sing the chorus on stage and it was incredibly touching.

His next album was ALL rock songs, to completely eradicate the trap he felt he was falling into. It's good when an artist can step outside the box and see what the people see. Especially with management trying to make you into what will profit them the most. Managers want everything from you NOW and don't care about long term career damage
