Great vid!!! I found half life through Uplink. As a 15 yo kid, my imagination went into overload. So when I finally played HL1, it hooked me and I have been a fan ever since. The best thing about it was that it wanted you to succeed through endless save points and it didn't intentionally kill you for no reason. It still retains great game play, especially with the release of Black Mesa.

Dang, I'm not sure if it's the video quality or just the games getting better
But each time I watch one going "Damn. This one is the best video"
Your quality was always solid, but I think it jumped even higher for this entry

Did you just make an Evangelion reference in a Half-Life meme?

I think you missed SiN in the chronology, it would be great if you could cover it. There's a proto-halflife feeling of it that's cemental in the evolution of the genre

Love this game but I find it hard to replay. There are a few too many memorable bullshit sections -- like I know the part coming up is really amazing but first I'm gonna have to savescum my way through this encounter against the marines where there's no cover and barely any resources.
My general feeling of it is that yes, the good parts are really good and there are a lot of them, but I always end up spending most of my time with the game trying to get through the frustrating parts in order to reach them.
However -- I feel like Black Mesa is a much more consistently fun experience, and a much easier one to get back into if I have a craving for Half-Life's best bits. Since its full completion in 2019 I usually go for it instead. :D

The marines are easy to beat even on the hardest difficulty if you know what you are doing I recommend shotguns and grenades and waiting around corners when you can

You forgot to say that Half Life mods were way better than Half Life itself :)

The modding scenes for many of these 90's shooters were larger than the games themselves. For Half Life specifically, it's difficult to separate the mods from the games.
Does Team Fortress count as a Half Life mod? Or a game made in the Half Life engine? It started as a Quake mod, but was released for sale by Valve after they bought the mod team and paid them to port it to Goldsrc.
Counter-Strike was a Half Life mod, until Valve bought it and its team. Same with Day of Defeat.
Valve blurred the line between mods and official releases, and they deserve a lot of credit for being so in touch with their community. Most of the best Half Life mods wound up as official Valve releases.
I'd be curious what your picks for best Half Life mods would be!

@@TalkingSkullGames it could be a nice idea for your next video, ranking the best half life mod :) in my opinion classics like They Hunger (1-3) and Wanted were great, I’d like to play also brutal half life, it should be great. Valve “was” great for modders but now days I think it’s not the same company. An example overall: Black Mesa. It was not directly supported and implemented with Valve developers, it is more an HL2 mod “approved” by Valve (if you remember Valve released only its “HL source” and it was terrible).

@@mattonthemoon225 For sure, this is all historical, not necessarily current. None of these companies exist now in anything resembling the form they did in the 90's.
I may give They Hunger a shot at some point. Mods are such a rabbit hole that I could never finish the series if I thoroughly covered the modding scenes for all these games. Doom alone could fill an entire year of videos with its many mods (I only covered the first two years' worth of Doom WADS, and only in passing detail).

Half Life didn't change gaming at all, game developers _still_ insist on forcing you to sit through stupid cutscenes every 2 minutes instead of letting you play the damn game.
We learned _NOTHING_ . We absorbed _NOTHING_ .

Great video but something I wanted to say about half life is that your sposed to think like a scientist you should think of half life kinda like a puzzle alot of people think that you can play half life like you can doom or qwake they try to play it that way die a bunch and just say oh the game is old and never touch it again but that is not how half life is sposed to be played you have to think think like a scientist for example the mine section you had isuees with you are sposed to throw a grenade or use a mp5 grenade on the ground that would reveal the mines and get rid of them my issue when other people play half life is when people think half life has BS design when it really doesn't.... well mostly I think the actually BS design in half life is getting stuck on geometry or somehow getting killed by a door I'm serious look up videos of getting killed by doors one more thing I think that the alien controlers could have been rebalenced yeah that's it thanks for reading my comment sorry if I ramble on a bit if you want to hear more about how unforgiving half life can be watch lead heads video on it
