Just got the SARB017. I normally wear 40-42mm watches. So the SARB feels a little small on my 6 5/8 in wrist. But this watch is really special. I think I'll get used to it.
Great review, I remember when Seiko announced they discontinued the Alpinist. Then ppl were buying them like they weren’t going to be around long, sellers on Ebay was charging the hell out of ppl for this in the $1,000 plus mark 😂 Wow, I mean I have a bridge for sale...any buyers?! 🤣🤣🤣
Purchased brand new SARB017 last week for 250€ cheaper compared to the price of new models. Even if the price would be equal, I'd preffer old model all day long. That decission was not close.
My perhaps garbled understanding is that the old Alpinist was discontinued because it was being counterfeited. The new Alpinist has a see-through case back so that the movement is visible, which makes it easier to spot a counterfeit. A downside of this is that the name "Alpinist" no longer appears on the watch.
Bought one for my birthday. After one year, watch began to slow and stop. Sent to seiko for repair which was $275. Watch came back after two months, but found the compass ring was locked up. Waiting for seiko to get back to me, but not happy with the poor repair work. Told them I will not pay for their mistake. NOT HAPPY SEIKO.
@@horologyproject Yeah, an open case back and about 1.2 mm thicker. Neither a positive for me. Ill take the older one. Get a hold of a new one and do a vs!
@@horologyproject The new one is a touch over 13mm. That and the sort of not so versatile stye sent me packing. Ordered the Hammy Khaki 38 auto on steel for the days I rest from carrying the Black Bay around on my wrist ; ) Many nato on the way as well..Cheers

Here we go again. I prefer the newer because of the cyclops but it's thicker! Distressed brown leather and your talking pure coolness....
I didn't know the new one was thicker. What a shame. I am not bothered by the cyclops, but I am not a fan of the prospex on the dial.

Oof... hate to break the news to you, but your SARB017 is fake.
I believe the new one has a more stable movement. Also, I kinda like the cyclops.
The new movement is based off the 6r15. It has a longer power reserve, but it’s accuracy is still just ok
