Isn't it crazy that you had the soft smoldering sound of "Father Figure", the jazzy "Kissing a Fool", the uptempo of "Monkey", the funky "I Want Your Sex" and the rockabilly of "Faith" all on one album? All written, arranged, produced, and sung at the ripe old age of 23. Question...has anyone ever heard anyone cover a George Michael song that was even close to his talent? I haven't but yet I heard him cover not just good but great artists like they were his songs. Awww, the genius of George Michael. What an amazing talent. Of course, the really surprising thing about George was learning after his death just how amazing he was as a human being. The things he did for charities and people he didn't even know is unmatched in the world of celebrity today. Not that plenty of celebrities don't do things for charities...they do. But they sure don't do it without taking credit for doing so.

''Faith'' was his most varied album. Including RnB (Father Figure, Hand to Mouth, I Want Your Sex (part 3)), rock (Faith, Look At your Hands), soul (One More Try), funk (I Want Your Sex (part 1 and 2), Hard Day, Monkey) and jazz (Kissing a Fool). ''Father Figure'' was originally a RnB up-tempo song until he removed the snare drums in the song when he mixing this album (before the album came out) and keep it like that in the album after he realized to this song sound better has a ballad, making this song has a RnB ballad.

Iconic song‼️The title track from his biggest album 🔥. Empress it does have that rock-a-billy sounds. George and that voice could sing anything.

I'm sure that many girls thought, "Well I guess it would be nice if he would touch my body" 😁. He had it all: the voice, the talent and the looks. 3:17 That "BABY" gets me every time 😀. Indeed, it's the best thing Elvis never did.

Yet another #1 single from George - released in late 1987, when he seemingly could do no wrong commercially. Very iconic video too, which as you noted, featured the jukebox and leather jacket George obliterated 3 years later in the “Freedom ‘90” video. George wanted to move on entirely from the look/sound featured on “Faith” and the numerous videos for the string of hit singles from that record.

It's strange how the singles from his Faith album kind of bombed in the UK by his very very high standards of course. No #1 hits - a couple of #2s.

I remember to hear so much this song when i was young.
He talk about the context of this song after the released of the album. Originally, George didn't planned to released ''Faith'' has the second single of the album of the same name. Because originally, when he write and recording this song, this song was originally a almost two minutes song. But a friend of him hear this song in studio and say at George to he hear a potential to be a huge success. So George re-work this song to adding the guitar solo at the middle and the organ and this was this recording that he finished in the album and how everybody hear in radios and in the music video.
For me this, it's did very well has the opening of the album, because the organ used the melody of the ''Wham'' song ''Freedom'' before starting this song and for me this was the song to transition has a solo artist before to the two next tracks of the album ''Father Figure'' and ''I Want Your Sex'' who theses two song express his sensual side to he never have in the ''Wham'' years.
Unlike the others songs of the album, who it's was very RnB or Funk, this song was influenced by the rock and roll of 60's and 70's, same whing with ''Look at Your Hands'', also influenced by the rock. The album explored not just the RnB and the Funk, but also the rock in this song and ''Look At Your Hands'', the soul in ''One More Try'' and the jazz in ''Kissing a Fool''.
The extract of ''I Want Your Sex'' before the jukebox played ''Faith'' was for me a reminder for the public of the precedent single of the album because the title track ''Faith'' was the second single of the album. ''Faith'' was the first of four n.1 singles in Billboard Hot 100 of the ''Faith'' album and ''Faith'' was considered has his signature song. Also, it's finished to be has te best-selling song of 1988 worlwide. When everybody talk about George, he talk about ''Faith''. It's was the song who have the most reactions when he singing live this song during his life. He wasn't expected this huge impact of this song when it's came out in october 1987, almost at the same time who the album came out.

There’s something indescribable about having been there for an artist’s entire career, and entire life. The way it parallels your own life and provides a soundtrack to your joys and tribulations. The way you say goodbye to a stranger whose work has made them feel like a dear friend. This is such a beyond iconic song and video. A defining moment of the 80s that stands far above most others as not only a key release that made a superstar into a megastar, but a brilliant song that is simultaneously classic and modern. And among so many defining moments in George Michael’s stellar career.
Empress always on the money with picking up on references 🙌 This is for sure riffing (literally 🎸) on Elvis’ music and swag. It’s George positioning himself in the upper upper echelons of music talent and stardom, and he certainly belongs there forever. The song’s 50s-80s rock fusion sound, the jukebox, the outfit, the guitar, George’s moves and the framing, lighting and editing of the video all reference Elvis and his oeuvre. The moves are pure Rock Around The Clock, the flat coloured backgrounds with George starkly framed over them call to mind Jailhouse Rock and the wide leg stance that George keeps striking, along with the vertical split screens, is an homage to the famous Andy Warhol print of Elvis as a cowboy gunslinger.
Like all the greats, George managed his own image and was the lead creative in manifesting this one. His video collaborator here was director Andy Morahan, who directed many of WHAM and George’s videos, as well as lots of others from the 80s, 90s and beyond.
George’s conflict with this iconic sexy image came later, and yes it stemmed from his need to be taken seriously as an artist. His misgivings also came from the fact this album turned him into an adored sex symbol, lusted after by millions of female fans across the globe, and the pressure to maintain that level of exposure for his work meant that he put his fame ahead of his authenticity by strenuously denying the rumours that he was gay. He came to regret that, and it led to great conflict with his record company, and with fame itself. Fortunately for us, processing this conflict, and emerging as one of the bravest LGBTQ role models of the 90s, also led him to create some of his most powerful, moving, witty and, most importantly, LASTING music.
I simply could not love this man more ❤️‍🔥 Incredible artist. Incredible journey. He is dearly and deeply missed.

"Faith" the album was STACKED: this song, "Father Figure," :I Want Your Sex," "One More Try" and more... all on one album. Late 80's was full of front to back (mostly anyway) classic albums

I'm a few days late to this, and I LOVE that you caught the reference throwback from Freedom '90, and your other followers have spoken so eloquently about this! I was surprised that nobody talked about Wham!'s original Freedom from 1984 which is played on the jukebox on the organ, signaling his "freedom." (It may be my favorite Wham! song, though I'm conflicted on that.) The fact that he used Wham!'s Freedom as imagery in the Faith video, and then used Faith's imagery in the Freedom '90 video is just insanely brilliant.

I remember I was driving home when the radio announcer said, “This is the brand new song from George Michael…”. I smiled as I was listening to it because I thought it was so different from his past stuff. I loved the Wham songs, but this was really unique for him and I thought it was extremely catchy. I believe “Father Figure” was the single released after “Faith”, and that one made me lose my mind! Lol

I'll still remember George singing this song on his FAITH WORLD TOUR at the Perth Entertainment Centre. He was going through some vocal problems but still sounded fantastic. The show was amazing and he danced with his guitar 🎸
I recall he went from ballad to uptempo songs with ease.. and had us all captivated .. song after song.
It was the end of the Australian summer 1988. They were special times ☀️ I was 18. This album was massive and well-respected even on non-pop radio stations.
    George was everywhere.

What an immensely talented man, not having seen his videos in a while until your reactions makes me appreciate his musicianship and beautiful voice more than ever. This video was definitely Elvis inspired, I'm sure he's looking down and smiling. But if George recorded this back in the '50s, you'd never get a shot of that "tush," Elvis was only shown from the waist-up on some broadcasts back then. 🙄 Also love that beautiful "cathedral organ" (album notes description) at the beginning, credited to Chris Cameron. I highly doubt it was performed and recorded on an actual pipe organ (not rich-sounding enough), most likely a newly-introduced Roland D-50 synth from that era. Sounds damn good though, as does the rest of the song!

Empress, you hear the variety just for the six singles of the ''Faith'' album, while you talk about the rock, in this song. But this album was his most varied album who he explored so many musical styles, with rock (Faith, Look at your Hands), RnB (Father Figure, Hand to Mouth, I Want Your Sex (part 3)), funk (I Want Your Sex (part 1 and 2), Hard Day, Monkey), soul (One more Try) and jazz (Kissing a Fool), a extension of his light sound of Wham years and a more mature sound then in Wham. ''Faith'' album was so good 35 years later and timeless and and didn't aged at all with the years.

...Let's give The Empress some ***GEORGIE TRIVIA TIME!!*** ...let's have FAITH toooo itttttt....
    - ...the 'intro' to "Faith" (the funeral Organ part), is actually the melody to WHAM!'s "Freedom"...indicating, that WHAM! is gone, and Georgie is HERE.....
    - "Faith" was the #1 Song of 1988, staying at # 1 for Four Weeks....although those weeks were in Dec. 1987, the tune stayed on the charts LONGER in 1988, giving him the title....beating out STELLAR years of Whitney & MJ!
    - ...as everyone knows, "Faith" (the LP) was CHOCK FULL O' HITS, and became the FIRST #1 R&B / Soul Album by a White Male....Georgie's PROUDEST achievement (he HIMSELF, said so...)
    - The Video set a PRECEDENT for 'straight' Males to step it UP, in term of their appearances; "Metrosexuality" was born, BECAUSE of George.....blow-outs for Men, Mani / Pedis, facial scrubs, High Fashion couture, mirrored sunglasses, expensive Footwear....ALL, because of Georgie!!
    - ...and mostly (although closeted at the time) George helped with the acceptance of G-Y MEN, showing that you can be masculine, stylish, talented, non-threatening to Straight Men....and STILL pull chicks...even when ya don't WANT 'em! ...ha-HAAA!! ...WANNA see the Top Ten, Dec., '87!?
    10. Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison
    9. Don't You Want Me - Jody Watley
    8. We'll Be Together -Sting
    7. So Emotional - Whitney Houston
    6. Shake Your Love - Debbie Gibson
    5. Is This Love - Whitesnake
    4. I've Had The Time Of My Life (from, "Dirty Dancing") - Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes
    3. Should've Known Better - Richard Marx
    2. Heaven Is A Place On Earth - Belinda Carlisle
    1. ***Faith*** - George Michael (1st wk. of 4 weeks)

  • @troopersjp
    @troopersjp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You know, the story..something that George himself said at the time of Freedom 90, what that he was tired of the "sexy" image and wanted to be taken seriously as an artist. And certainly, I think that is part of it. But...I really want to point out that George was a queer man, and the sexy image was basically selling him as a straight sex symbol...i.e. it was a form of colseting the record company was imposing on him. He couldn't flirt with sexuality the same way Erasure, the Pet Stop Boys, and a lot of those other groups could do because he was constantly being sold as a straight heart throb. I think with the awareness of him as a queer man the lyrics of Freedom (where he is pushing back against this era of George Michael) take on a bit more subtextual depth:
"Heaven knows I was just a young boy
Didn't know what I wanted to be (Didn't know what I wanted to be)
I was every little hungry schoolgirl's pride and joy
And I guess it was enough for me (And I guess it was enough for me)
To win the race, a prettier face
Brand new clothes and a big fat place
On your rock and roll TV (Rock and roll TV)
But today the way I play the game is not the same, no way
Think I'm gonna get me some happy
I think there's something you should know
(I think it's time I told you so)
There's something deep inside of me
(There's someone else I've got to be)
Take back your picture in a frame
(Take back your singing in the rain)
    I just hope you understand
Sometimes the clothes do not make the man"
And of course he and his record label were in a lot of tension. He wanted to do more Blue Eyed Soul, and they didn't want that. He sued his label...and lost. Anyhow, I think it is really interesting that later in his career, after he was outed, he didn't abandon sexiness, but his sexiness was much more queer and less sanitized for Tiger Beat magazine.
