Got mine from the London G-Shock shop on Carnaby St. I have many Casio squares but this one just wears so special and you’d only know that if you wear one for the day.
Glad I managed to pick the is one up as my only other square is the full metal one - I don’t think the screen detracts that much but wonder could it be anything to do with having a 5 year battery life?
I have the original DW5000 and the GW5000U, soo yeah I don't known if I'm adding this to the collection. And I'm pretty sure the GW5000U is made in the Yamagata Factory as well, at least in Japan

Me, I feel the 5610 already satisfies my willingness to nod to G-Shock history because of the strong resemblance, and I prefer the solar power. With a 14 strong G collection I was a little tempted, but really my 5610U looks very similar. Appreciate the closeness to the original but now I'd have to add a less clear display to the list already containing "£70 more", "no MB6" and "not solar". At the price a no for me I'm afraid.
The screwdown casebacks on G-shocks look cheap to me, compared to the regular 4-screw casebacks and especially compared to the 'milled-looking' backs on the GW models. Also, much, much, much prefer the EL to the LED backlight! And I don't give a monkeys if a G is SS, or resin. I probably prefer the resin, tbh!

I have the original 2009 GW-5000-1JF. When I first saw this watch, I was interested in it. But honestly, a lot of it feels either the same, or a downgrade, to the GW-5000. The only upsides being that you can see the time in every other mode (which admittedly is pretty cool) and that the design of the strap on the DW-5000R mimics that of the original 1983 model and it looks really cool! But are those two features worth spending $300+ on something I basically already have a better version of? Now the other models they released.. the DW-6900RL-1JF, GA-110RL-1AJF AND THE GA-2100RL-1AJF models, those I want!
two more nitpicks on to of the screen "issue": 1) how difficult is it to put 200M instead of 20BAR to make it 1 step closer to the original? 2) would've been nice if they stealthily tucked in a solar panel under those bricks, and I don't mind if there's no indication of it being solar (that actually makes it cooler in my book). fun video as always, thanks!
Nice reissue, but I already use the GW-5000U and the GMW-B5000D-1ER full metal g-shock, and I still have my old DW-5600E. I have to tell that the full metal g-shock is using the most crisp and legible display, I think STN display is used. But the GW - 5000U is using a very good quality resin bezel and flexible strap. I don't know why they don't added tough solar to this new reissue.
Man, the screen being faded/ghosted when viewing straight on is such a disappointment. We’ve seen this in a lot of new Casios now across a range of price points so clearly it’s a conscious decision being made by Casio for whatever reason. There’s still absolutely loads to love here and it’s a great retro reissue nod to an all time classic! And hey, the demand is clearly there for it given it’s sold out, I just wish that screen was more like the one on the original you borrowed from Fratellini. Awesome show as ever MWC!
I’m with you 100% on the screen contrast. I’ve noticed it on every review I have watched of this watch. One of my recent g-shock square purchases suffers from the same phenomenon. I makes me not want to buy another square unless I can hold it in hand first.
It's really weird. In some lights, it's perfect at basically any angle. Others, straight on looks like a dead battery. I still love mine and wear it daily.
Have you checked the version for the Japanese market? IMO much more premium the GW-5000U-1JF. Better resin, stainless steel core. The only drawback (not for me) is the missing red line in the face.
Definitely very cool but I personally will stick with the 5610. Thanks for the great review though and good on Casio for releasing it without limited numbers. I’m sure it will be a hot seller for them!
I had to have the dw 5000r as I had the original 5000c! The screen reminds me of a digital watch with a weak battery? It is annoying me now to be honest! But what is more annoying is mine was faulty out of the box! This is the first Casio I've ever had an issue with!
I think you should go banging on Casio's door until they explain themselves. It's display looks like the very retro indeed feeling of,"battery needs swapping"
many new casio models have it including the WS-1700, which I've replaced with a GBX-100 for more accuracy and a far superior display. Apart from backlight, which Skmei does better!
I had the original in the early 80’s but alas didn’t keep hold of it. Mine had wire guard protection rails across the face and I see most G-Shocks nowadays still have the position guides for guard rails. Can you still buy face protection rails / wires? I think they make G-Shocks look even beefier!
One of the things you've not mentioned is the module number. It looks like it's the same module that's in the 5600e? If the 5600e has a clearer screen, then would this point to a quality control issue?
Casio have the technology for a great display, its called STN and it costs like $1 extra to manufacture. They reserve it for their high-end watches only, $500+
The faded LCD (every reviews pointed this issue) it is a no go for me : I prefer wait a bit and choose for a Heritage square G wihch are coming soon (on JDM :( )
I am fascinated how watch enthusiasts will rip apart inexpensive watches for not having certain features and or finishes, and are not sized for a 6.5 inch wrist. But are absolutely in love with Casio/g-shocks that are most definitely robust and good value, but for the most part plastic, big and ugly.
I really like the strap like the 1st g shock and the almost exact aesthetics , the only thing that really disappoints me is the display , I have a 40th anniversary DW5040PG And it really does not have that display problem , it looks very strong and clear the numbers . I prefer the 40th anniversary much more .
The 5040 is way too expensive. The 5000R is a must have and the most accurate 1983 Japanese square yet. I didn't have the 5610U but that would be the pick for most people. My display Looks pretty good, never look at it square on, 5-10 degrees is perfect. Most squares look average from many angles where as this looks clear from almost all angles.
I can't understand why they wouldn't just give it the features of the 5610u. I love my 5610 and although the build quality looks nice on this I would still pick my 5610 if I had to buy again... The atomic time is just too damn good, always knowing its accurate down to the second.
Nah, the H5600 is still the best. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I really like the fitness features on that watch. And to be fair, G-shocks are for people who roam outdoor. This guy in the video looks like he never sees daylight at all xD

Glad I’ve seen this video, bought this and thought it was faulty 😂.. terrible screen but still had to have it 🤦🏻♂️
It replaced my 5610u. An incredible watch…
I think you should go banging on Casio's door until they explain themselves. It's display looks like the very retro indeed feeling of,"battery needs swapping"
We need a GWX-5600 with a screw down case back and metal frame . We also need it in a full metal version!
Looks exactly like the solar multi band 6, which I have. Much prefer it than the lesser spec model.
The value is more than the specs my friend. But your 5610 is great
7:00 "what sort of maniac is trying to look at his watch at that angle?" 😜
MIP display ftw! 💪
Did you compare multiple versions of that model in t regard to the screen. It might just be a defective screen.
Take a look at other reviews chief
many new casio models have it including the WS-1700, which I've replaced with a GBX-100 for more accuracy and a far superior display.
You can definitely find protection rails online. Not sure of they are OEM thought. But does it really matter?
When will you test a Garmin? Fx Instinct 2x! Superb watch! Beats Casio!
One of the things you've not mentioned is the module number. It looks like it's the same module that's in the 5600e?
If the 5600e has a clearer screen, then would this point to a quality control issue?
Casio have the technology for a great display, its called STN and it costs like $1 extra to manufacture. They reserve it for their high-end watches only, $500+
Analog gshock is where the stars meet the sky dawg.
Thanks but I’ll stick to my 5000U. Great review as always.👍🏼
Mr Mad, you should review the watch GST-B600 great small metal G shock
I do like your mudmaster.. if only the digital part were legible/ thanks man. making the world a better place
In my humble opinion, the basic tough solar square without multiband 6 is GOAT.
That's right, the G-5600UE-1 is a good watch.
Literally the worst Square ever moosh
We need a Vertex Corner!
Screen would drive me mad sitting next to my gw 5000u
Yea, Russell!
Great video! I feel like I got all of this with the 5040- and that display is definitely disappointing. I might ACTUALLY pass on this G lololol
odd that Skmei have much better clarity and backlights for their displays....
