"What do you think you're doing?! Get back here and do your duty!" "We are doing our duty, governor," the marine said calmly, "The people are safe. Our mission is complete." "You cannot be serious! The force of its engines pushed the bulbous governor onto his back. His robes were now soaked in rainwater and blood. He had hid behind his walls, his towers, and his spires. He had hid behind his men and his entourage and his status. At first, he had distance. Even the largest of mountains were small if viewed from afar. How small the Space Marines seemed then. They were few. His men were many. And even the largest of mountains would fall to a thousand charges. How large, then, did the Space Marine in front of him seem. And he remembered the litanies and prayers from his childhood, long ago, long before his ascension. They were not just 'Space Marines'. They were not merely genetically modified transhuman supersoldiers. No. They were His Angels. And they brought death. The yellow visor was silent. His Chapter was fire clad, and his visor brought calm light. But there was no warmth today. Not from the Salamanders, not from his people, not toward him. The governor, he who proclaimed himself lord of the land, who saw his authority above that of the Adeptus Astartes, felt small then. His guards had thrown down their arms, crying and weeping in regret. Those who had been careless enough to fire upon the approaching party by the governor's words were cut down without mercy, a far cry from the gentleness the previous party displayed during their first interaction. The rest of the nobles, their sharp tongues and poison spit lost in their throats, some voiding their bowels, their so called dignity abandoned, huddled fearfully in their corners. Next to the Space Marine was a girl. Some random girl from some poor sector of the world, dirty, raggaed... enraged. Her name was Stephanie, a nobody, and yet something allowed her to not only stand beside one of the Emperor's own with her back straight, and also allowed her to carry the heavy, weighted standard of the Second Company without question. - When there was no response on the Vox and the Augur scans returned null results for life signals, they had felt saddened but understanding. Space Marines fought. Space Marines died. So long as they had accomplished their duties. But the air was different. There was no welcoming party to greet them, the gate firmly closed, the bodies of their brothers strewn about like garbage. When they entered the walls, they saw a flood of people kneeling around a girl, the girl kneeing around a flag. A standard. Their Standard. There was confusion, of course, and mistrust, for a Standard should stay with those that had carried it into battle, always. But there were always exceptions. The girl, (Stephanie, my Lord, she said through tears), was questioned and a clear picture was borne. One of cowardness. Of greed. Of a man that did not know his place. And the simmering flames of sadness rose to an inferno of rage. - Salamanders. They who embodied the warmth of fire, the hope it represented. A campfire in the darkness of void, welcome to all who make seek asylum from the horrors beyond. But fire was dual visaged. Fire was not just for heat or for power. Fire burned. Fire raged. Fire represented the Emperor's Light. The Emperor's Light was hope. The Emperor's Light was Wrath. "I-" the governor tried, stammering. "I-" "For the lives you have acosted," the Captain said, and he was referring to the civilians that had perished outside those walls; he would morn his brothers separate, for they died a warrior's death. "For the dishonor you sow at the highest levels. In the Emperor's name, and in that of our Father, Vulkan, I sentence you to death." "W-wai-ahhhh~!" The governor, so fanciful of his geothermal baths, bathed down in the purest of flames: promethium, which cleanses all. The body fell, charring and smoking, still wreathed in holy fire. The prayers loudened. As if the Emperor would forgive them for their sins. The Captain knelt down, one hand on Stephanie's shoulders. "You have the spirit of a dragon," he whispered. "Thank you for keeping this safe." He took the banner's staff into his hands. "My brother would be proud." Stephanie nodded as the Salamander rose. Then they turned and left. An in their smouldering hearts echoed one word: Fools.
The nobles sit opposite a space marine captain drumming his fingers on a massive wooden table, damaging it with each go. Besides him stands Stephanie, still holding the banner. "So...I heard you berated my battle brothers, abandoned those whose care you were entrusted with and damaged a venerable veteran of the chapter in your cowardice. This matter will have to be addressed. Once the Tyrranids are driven off, naturally. Come Stephanie." He stands from the ruined chair, his full height casting a long shadow over them. They depart the chamber, passing his personal guard. They follow, all but one. He speaks into his private comm so the girl does not have to hear. "Brother, purge the gene stealers." Official reports would state that the rulers of the hive were incinerated by tyrranid bio plasma in a freak turn of events.
They wouldn't even need to hide it and can publicly make an example of him and those who supported his actions. He helped aliens kill humans and tried to reduce the manpower of the Imperium. That is _all_ that needs to be known. More than enough, really. He is a heretic and will be treated as such. On top of that, locking the Astartes out of the city with the Tyranids? The only reason they won't be obliterated from orbit by the Inquisition or other Astartes is because the Salamanders would stand against it or even hide what happened to prevent it.
That governor just cost the Salamanders not only a squad of capable marines, but a Dreadnaught as well. Dreadnaughts are very rare and important components of any space marine chapter, not only for the veteran of a thousand battles, but the tech of the dreadnaught chassis itself. It's more than enough to suspect the governor and his lackeys as genestealer cultists If an Inquisitor hears about this, they wouldn't even need to placate anyone higher on the administratum to execute this idiot. The Salamanders commander that arrives with the fleet wouldn't need one either.
Not only that, the Space Marine who gave Stephanie the Standard was stated to be an "Ancient"... Meaning he was a _VERY_ old Space Marine, and one who had seen many wars, many battles and many victories on the part of mankind... ...All of that, wasted by one Egotistical little prat of a Govenor who cared more about waving his authority around and saving his own face.
3:15 Vulkan is residing at the deepest darkest corner of his room at Nocturne where he's playing Battle Mace 42 Million and waiting for the Salamanders to gather all Nine Artefacts together so he will finally come out, sneak into space and then make a dramatic entrance via drop pod to congratulate them for retrieving them with the Power of Friendship.
@@piotrwisniewski70 They miss the point of 40k. It isn't endless misery and edgelord pushing crap. It is the light of hope in spite of the misery and crushing war. I mostly wanted it to continue so we could see her hand the banner back to the chapter.
Moreso when you notice something else in the last panel... Stephanine had rallied the guards into chanting the Salamander's Oath... The Guards who were forced to shut the Gates on the Salamanders, else the Govenor would have punished them and their families.
Sister Stephanie contributed to the war effort against the Tyranid menace by occasionally snare-trapping a lone Ripper worm and tossing it into the household furnace. Watching as it writhes in pain as Vulkan's firey benevolence engulfs it.
Something tells me that girl is going to seek membership in the Sororitas, constantly requesting deployment wherever the Salamanders must do their work.
Even in the blackest of darkness, there is still light in the darkness..... Great men are forged in war. It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.
It is s satire, but the fact that there are genuine heroes and good guys on the setting is what makes it funny. The Imperium of Men could follow the Salamanders, White Scars and Grey wolves' path and example of how to keep their humanity and loyalty to one another, but instead, they are blinded by false faith and promises. The path of salvation is literally amongst themselves, but they much prefer to lead their empire to inevitable ruin. It's like the perfect dark humor joke, the heroes' sacrifice and devotion to humanity ironically is what will lead humanity itself to destruction
I'd like to see a sequel when the relief fleet arrives and the Planetary Nobility get their comeuppance for effectively hindering the Astartes in their mission and causing them to die by not leaving the gate open for them. That Spire Lord is about to get executed publicly.
I mean seriously. Had he kept the gates open for a while longer he would have a veteran company of space marines and a dreadnought to help hold the line for the following week. That's a lot of firepower in a strongly entrenched position. Instead he chose to have them all killed out in the open. Squandering their valuable potential Not only is he a heartless coward. He's plain stupid and incompetent on top of it. 🤦♂️
1:30 At least there is a benefit of being a Dreadnought, a regular Astarte or even a squad of them wouldn't be able to hold up the closing gate long enough for the civilians to get through.
Alternate version: The gate control room personel rebel at the order and keep the gae open, holding the control room from the royal guard long enough for the salamanders to get inside. Their death is more fuel to the fire when the Sons of Vulcan come knocking on he palace gates.
...She kind of _did_ light up the city at the end. Look at the crowd chanting "Unto the Anvil"... There are members of the Imperial Guardsmen in the crowd, all chanting "Unto the Anvil"... She basically lit a fire in the city... A Fire that will torch the Zoggin' keister of Govenor Henson. ...Basically, Govenor Henson's treachery to both the people within the city, and to the Salamanders, will result in flaming retribution one way or another... Such as declaring Henson a Heretic.
I can’t wait to see the second part where a good part of the chapter come to the planet, *very pissed off knowing how their brothers and the civilians were received by the governor. They would probably be joined by an inquisitor that will find, suspicious, at least, that a governor dared say “fuck you” to HIS angels.*
Throw in the fact that the Guardsmen of the city would have been the ones to make the call to the Inquisition... And would have been the ones to claim that Henson is a heretic.
I like to imagine that much like in the case of Yarrick on Armageddon, that there is an old decrepit and retired commissar, he pulls his old coat on, racks a bolt into faithful old Coward's Bane and goes to have a meeting with the governor.
No matter how big or small the salamanders will be there, from sending supplies to making there last stand. Vulkan knows his sons will fight to protect the imperium of man. so he forges a metal flower with the name of that salamander and puts it in his garden so the imperium of man does not forget the sacrifices of his sons
Ooof that governor meet the salamander chapter he is in for a world of hell. He is responsible for the death of an ANCIENT and a DREADNOUGHT AND willingly sacrificing civilians. That governor is gonna burn for a long time.
When the fleet comes, the girl will stand with the standart in her hand fighting against the Xenos. Holding it up high for all to see in a desprate last stand against the Xenos. The govoneur and his ... are dead. The last surviewers are behind the banner fo this Salamander. They evac the last humans, exterminatus the planet and have a few new heros on there side.
Why dose this hurt?! When i first read it i felt nothing, but the voices and the emotions they applied to it.... it felt like pride to see are salamanders, but at the same time felt the pain watching them die one by one as they give their lives for the people.... for humanity. May these marines be by the emperor side.
While the Salamanders aren’t that cruel (to humans anyways). It would serve as perfect karma for such a horrendous man. But tis is the 41st millennium. Where there *is* only war.
@@ramonayala7647 Being a Slave/Servitor isn't "grimdark" enough? And after all, nobody says that Salamanders themselves must recruit him... There are many Chapters eager to help just to have Salamanders owning them a debt.

Salamanders. Humility and humanity against selfishness. Strong enough to protect others via ones sacrifice against protecting ones selfish desires. A simple thought to whom put above; me or them. Sons of the XVIII th derive strenght from that simple thought - "Them." "Into the Fires of Battle Unto the Anvil of War".

This is why the sons of Vulkan will always be my favorite. Despite knowing they would perish that day, they faced their fate with pride, knowing they saved a few more innocents. Just as their father would.
remember, no matter what chapter, the Space Marines will and always be human. Ranging from a firstborn to one of the emperors 10’000. *they will always be human. in birth, and death.*
"INTO THE FIRES OF BATTLE! UNTO THE ANVIL OF WAR!" Vulkan would be proud of his sons, they did their duty until the end. I almost cried when Brother Goro held the door so everyone could get through, I was so happy and so proud of him. The Salamanders were heroes, and their sacrifice shall be remembered forever. Their flames may have gone out, but their embers they left behind still shine bright in the cold darkness of the galaxy. That governer is going to understand exactly what he did and why he is unfit for the role of governor.
@@jeanlamarc8563 I believe the Salamanders are going to make sure Justice will be served once the Liberation Fleet arrives. A cruel twist of fate would ofc be if the refugees turn out to have been infected.
I mean, he was right. The salamanders were endangering the city wasting time on easily replaceable civilians. The lives of everyone they saved doesn't even amount to one of their own. Overall, what they did was a net negative for the imperium. The governor might be a dick but he was also right.
This is one of my favourite comics. Very few things hit me harder than stuff like this……good people doing what they KNOW is the right thing. Regardless of the cost to themselves
And when the Chapter master hears of this, he'll be more frightening than the great dragons the Salamanders slay on Nocturne. May the God Emperor show mercy on the planetary governor for the rage of Salamanders will show no mercy...
Unfortunately for Governor Henson, the liberation fleet would be accompanied by none other than Commissar Holt. The pimp hand he would go on to deliver to the inept noble would become the stuff of legend throughout the entire sub-sector. A story of hope for the common man to show them that there is indeed justice in the galaxy, and a cautionary tale for proud nobles about the dangers of failing to live up to the Emperor's expectations.
The salamnder has to be my most favourite space marine chapter no only they are loyal. They are also the most humane and will do anything to save civilian. even if it means their live. Kudos to those salamander.
I read many comments which say the Salamanders' sacrifice was a waste. Why to throw away valuable equipment, relics and whatnot. Well, here's why: every Space Marine chapter has a different combat doctrine. The Templars would have used the civilians as improvised close combat weapons if they would have ran out of ammo. Blood Angels would either disregard civvies or request them to fight by their side...until the black rage hits in, then everyone becomes a target. Raven Guard would try to instruct them to fight the enemy. Salamanders on the other hand do not view Imperial citizens as resources. They treat humans as the future of the Imperium. In the eyes of a Salamander, that little girl might become a great leader, a Canoness, or maybe a living saint somewhere along her life. One of the women could give birth to the next great hero of the Imperium. A guardsman's life spared is a dead enemy in the next battle. That is why they are willing to give their lives, sacrifice a dreadnought, potentially losing irreplaceable relics and weapons. Might seem like a waste. But a handful of space marines in return for the future of the Imperium is well worth it in their eyes. "Into the Fire!"
Why do we love 40k even in its grim darkness? This comic is one of them. It is dark, but there is hope. There is loss, but there is life. There is joy in seeing goodness in the world and sorrow when it fades. And then there are memes where the Space Marine chapter learns a fat waste of space doomed a company and what happens to him afterwards.
Well, a few things for shure; 1 that girl is a future high ranking auxilia officer and is going to go Lotara Sarin on anyone who tries to touch that standard 2 that governor is going to have a VERY bad day, preferrably becouse of a heavy flamer 3 this guys are just Salamanders, nothing more, nothing less 4 exactly becouse they are Salamanders, One minute of silence at attention is required for the proud sons of Vulkan, bastions of mankind and MEN among men. INTO THE FIRE OF BATTLE, ONTO THE ANVIL OF WAR!!!!
It‘s a soul crushingly beautiful concept to think that vulkan, since he will always return and due to his empathy and humanity, would read up on all the sons he lost while. Learning of each of their fates and mourning to maybe forging something out of found plates from each company that lost many brothers in heroic actions and wear it to battle as a walking monument to their bravery and sacrifice. I could see vulkan du that.

-
When there was no response on the Vox and the Augur scans returned null results for life signals, they had felt saddened but understanding.
-
Salamanders.
"For the lives you have acosted," the Captain said, and he was referring to the civilians that had perished outside those walls; he would morn his brothers separate, for they died a warrior's death. "For the dishonor you sow at the highest levels. In the Emperor's name, and in that of our Father, Vulkan, I sentence you to death."
"W-wai-ahhhh~!"
The governor, so fanciful of his geothermal baths, bathed down in the purest of flames: promethium, which cleanses all.
"My brother would be proud."
Stephanie nodded as the Salamander rose. Then they turned and left.

Always fear the anger of a gentle man. And Vulkan is one of the most gentle hearted men in 40k.
"Brother, purge the gene stealers."
Official reports would state that the rulers of the hive were incinerated by tyrranid bio plasma in a freak turn of events.
I really like the idea that some of the nobility where genestealers. While the rest where just incompetent.

It's more than enough to suspect the governor and his lackeys as genestealer cultists
If an Inquisitor hears about this, they wouldn't even need to placate anyone higher on the administratum to execute this idiot.

Sister Stephanie contributed to the war effort against the Tyranid menace by occasionally snare-trapping a lone Ripper worm and tossing it into the household furnace. Watching as it writhes in pain as Vulkan's firey benevolence engulfs it.

Commissar Holt....now THERE'S a name I haven't heard in a while!

The salamnder has to be my most favourite space marine chapter no only they are loyal. They are also the most humane and will do anything to save civilian. even if it means their live. Kudos to those salamander.
I assume this girl wants to be a Space Marine now, so a new Sister of Battle is born.
Just a small combat patrol and they manage to rescue that many civilians for weeks. Vulkan will be proud.
Even the Dreadnought who is built out of rage, still had his love for humanity
Vulcan would be proud and so is the people of Imperium
