The non framed edges (to stop flex) allowed the large stone and mace impacts to distribute with wave action on the shield...while destroying the arm of the person holding it the poly holds up. One would need a finer point like an arrow with the mass of the stone behind it to blow through to focus the impact I would think.

One thing that might be playing a factor: you’ve got the right thickness, but I think the lack of curve might actually be working in the shield’s favor. Every riot shield I ever used had a pretty pronounced curve to give it more rigidity. The shield loses some of that flex that helps absorb impact in exchange for not folding when a protestor the size of The Mountain from GoT takes personal offense to your existence. Which, honestly, is fair. Shoulder checks are usually a greater threat than shepherds with slings. With that in mind, I suspect a more conventional shield would have more trouble.
Polycarbonate is pretty tough stuff. Imagine if soldiers in the Middle Ages had shields made from transparent aluminum, which is a real thing now and not just a line from that Star Trek movie.
to make "GrondTwo", use metal from a car leaf spring. take care when cutting to not let the steel go blue, and keep the action edge cool when welding. this will let you keep the temper in the metal without further blacksmithing. good luck
What you need for Grond is a oxy-acetylene touch and a l bit of hammer work. it shouldn't be to complicated if you can find someone with the tools. if you are in a farming region (it looks that way) there is a decent chance a neighbor would have the tools necessary as oxy-acetylene touches are often used to work on farm implements so you might not need a blacksmith. Looking closer you may be able to bend the spikes back with a good vice instead of a hammer. (again a farmer with a small work shop should have this)
If you haven’t done a collaboration with Tod’s Workshop yet, you should. He’s the sort of blacksmith that can set you up with a period accurate mace, or blade for that matter, but he’s also done long videos on testing, including a similar piece on whether a longbow could go through a breastplate… (spoilers, it can’t, but you can turn a breastplate into a portable shrapnel generator)
Perhaps you could try this with lead fishing weights, they come in fairly heavy sizes, and the weight is more concentrated. The Romans used lead sling projectiles.
Yes indeed. I am working to that, I have found some good lead fishing weights. I am also trying to make a good “Catch” so I don’t lose them. Don’t want a bunch of lead Littering the back
@@dashrendar5320Wallyworld sells molds for casting your own fishing weights. Use neodymium magnets as “seeds” for the cast weights. That will give you periodic-correct weights that are easily found. As a belt and suspenders kind of engineer, I would also recommend two or three 4x8 sheets of 3/4” plywood as a backup. You will know better than me if that would create unsafe ricochets. If it might, contact me and we’ll go deeper into the idea.
With my sling the piece of cloth was coming too loose, so I took another piece of cloth, put it on the other side, and sewn it together. For those of you who don't know a sling that is made right the first time is just a piece of string, it only needs that patch if there is a flaw you need to hide, like waxing a statue that didn't come out perfect. Basically I tried to make a Baltriactic sling and instead made a shepherd's sling. The thing about riot gear is even in full riot gear and with riot shields the pull lice still get injured by people throwing stones, sometimes to the point of requiring hospital treatment. But keep in mind, the people who try to solve their problems with violence now a days are usually stupid and didn't even train. Seriously, imagine if they trained, AND thought to use a piece of string to throw harder. Well we are here to find out.
🎼🎵You sling me right round, baby right round, like a pebble baby, right round round round!🎼🎵 That great video! I'm impressed how well that shield held up against the arrows and the sling stones. I wonder how well it would hold up to lead sling bullets. I think lead sling bullets would be fairly easy to make. Lead would be pretty easy to get, either fishing weights or lead for casting bullets. You could probably get some .50 to .75 cal bullets for black powder rifles. That'd be interesting to test.
Hahahaha yeah I was shocked as well when I purchased it I didn’t think it would do too much. I had no experience with that material in general and boy. It did really well.. I really wanna see how it does with like spears and other thrusting type weapons
Dude that would be such a cool unit type. With the speed a sling can produce just ramped up with massive rocks. Would be faster than a catapult or trebuchet
If i were you I'd apply at Harlequin. Pb aka lead was used by slingers. Denser than Gains. Smaller than rocks, about 1/2 fist sized, may have better luck. Great vid! Thanks!
Yes, I’ve been wanting to do bread for a long time, but the only concern is just having it laying around my yard. Sling rocks get lost pretty easily and I don’t want a bunch of lead sitting out there.
@@dashrendar5320 after you cast your shot, paint it orange so you can see it! Is definitely different from the rocks and can be identified by the shiny parts. Great video! You should really think of wearing safety glasses (and maybe something around the neck) when smashing things with Grond. Ricochet from debris is a serious danger.
Maybe get a heavy gauge sprocket from a farm store. Sling it like a hand launched clay bird. Or get a ball hitch off your truck. Or a broken off PTO shaft?
When your multiple personalities start arguing and fighting over who is best....love to see it. One day, he'll have to do one where each of them is questioned by FBI guy
Cold formed polycarbonate shields have been used for decades by demining charities around the world. While they are of little use for anti-tank mines, they provide a fair measure of protection against many types of anti-personnel mines. The theory being that working behind one, suitably angled, the deminer may lose a hand, but has a good chance of surviving the blast and fragmentation.
I’ve had to use polycarbonate shields as a prison officer, ours were supposed to stop a 12G shotgun round. They only fail after abuse and during training I managed to put a pickaxe handle through a shield as the angry prisoner, but that shield took a lot of abuse before my time destroying it. Try getting a British shield preferably a prison issued one, and not a police one.
Thanks for that! I will check it out. Do you know what thickness it was? A lot of places sell ones that are labeled as something but are actually quite thin
@ A full-body shield made from 4 mm thick clear polycarbonate. It has a forearm hook and double D handle, and can be used individually or connected to create an uninterrupted barrier. This is the new spec, but I think my vintage era 1990’s were thicker and heavier. 6mm or 8mm.
Want to add a curve to that? Heat gun, something with a nice curve, and ratchet straps. ... Maybe. Dunno how it will work with that thickness, but it works wonders on wood.
@@dashrendar5320 Ooo, that'd be tricky. Not enough, and nothing happens. Too much, and you'd turn it to a blackened mess. At least with wood you use moisture, or make your own plywood... I can't think of anything that doesn't require an oven to heat it evenly. But then you'd be getting into 'dangerous' territory with melting plastic fumes. Maybe look into getting some Delren? delran? ... durable plastic, usually white, and used on conveyor lines between belts. more susceptible to heat.
I wonder if there was less flexibility if it would make the plexi less durable. The police ones have the metal frames and don't seem to really flex much. Wouldn't transfer as much energy and therefore concentrate the force to a smaller area. Great video though and those slings.....no wonder they dominated for so long. They put out a lot of energy and would not enjoy being behind that shield with dozens of those stones slamming into it from a group of sling throwers.
You can try will stelter he's a youtube who would probably love to work on your weapon Or just grab a cheap anvil and wooden mallet and a blowtorch and you could give it a whirl as well it's super easy and fun I think it should be a fundamental skill to do rough maintenance on your weaponry whether blade rope or firearm
@dashrendar5320 if your worried about your kids or maybe animals you could try and induction coil heater I believe they are more expensive but use electromagnetic stuff to heat the metals but if you touch it on accident you won't be hurt quite as bad or if at all
Yeah, it was nuts. All I have to do is a little bit of math. I just need to get the weight and then I need a speed sensor so I will try to see if I can figure it out once I get a proper sensor for speed.
Yes, that is one thing still wanting to do. I just don’t wanna have a bunch of it sitting around in my backyard so I need to figure out a way to make sure I don’t lose it.
200 gram lead is where I’d put the best chance of cracking it. And a slimmer sling. That long sling is like fricking sail rope. Long , thin sling with 200-250g lead .
random idea for a video clay arrow heads fired in the pit already attached, but the shaft is of green (waterlogged throughout as to prevent Buring) shaft is sticking out and away from the heat.
So, I suppose the way to do this is to have one guy trick-shooting three arrows into the shields at once and then another guy slinging and the shields will basically blow up.
Man that longer sling with the bigger rocks are going to hurt the guys arm holding that, I wonder if it could even break their arm, there is just so much energy transfer.

AWESOMENESS!....I need to get me a few slings myself!
They are very fun
Viking Fabio can't hurt you
Viking Fabio shoots a war bow at you.
😂😂😂😂
What you need for Grond is a oxy-acetylene touch and a l bit of hammer work. it shouldn't be to complicated if you can find someone with the tools. if you are in a farming region (it looks that way) there is a decent chance a neighbor would have the tools necessary as oxy-acetylene touches are often used to work on farm implements so you might not need a blacksmith. Looking closer you may be able to bend the spikes back with a good vice instead of a hammer. (again a farmer with a small work shop should have this)
He Slingy, I spoke to Trevor and got you signed up for the next 300 movie ;)
Haha it’s go time! Trevor you better have gotten me a good contract this time 😂
Loved the conversations - first time I've ever witnessed this degree of multi-personality disorder, with actual multiple bodies. ;-)
Haha thank you, I enjoy the self banter 😂
If you haven’t done a collaboration with Tod’s Workshop yet, you should. He’s the sort of blacksmith that can set you up with a period accurate mace, or blade for that matter, but he’s also done long videos on testing, including a similar piece on whether a longbow could go through a breastplate… (spoilers, it can’t, but you can turn a breastplate into a portable shrapnel generator)
Man working or meeting Tod and Joe Gibbs is bucket list for sure. He is an absolute legend
L'OREAL would be lucky to have you!
Haha fingers crossed😂
Perhaps you could try this with lead fishing weights, they come in fairly heavy sizes, and the weight is more concentrated. The Romans used lead sling projectiles.
Yes indeed. I am working to that, I have found some good lead fishing weights. I am also trying to make a good “Catch” so I don’t lose them. Don’t want a bunch of lead Littering the back
@@dashrendar5320maybe hi vis paint & embed something magnetic if it becomes a problem?
@@dashrendar5320Wallyworld sells molds for casting your own fishing weights. Use neodymium magnets as “seeds” for the cast weights. That will give you periodic-correct weights that are easily found. As a belt and suspenders kind of engineer, I would also recommend two or three 4x8 sheets of 3/4” plywood as a backup. You will know better than me if that would create unsafe ricochets. If it might, contact me and we’ll go deeper into the idea.
Slinging rocks! Yep, polycarb can only be shot trough with firearms and big bore pcp airguns reliably.
Yeah it’s really quite impressive stuff
Great channel, really informative and great research.
Thank you my friend, truly that means a lot and I greatly appreciate it
It depends. So many variables. I will say yes under certain circumstances.
Very true. There are a lot of variables that can factor in specially the type of projectile used the condition of the shield, etc. etc..
ALL your videos are great to watch 🎉🎉
You are so kind to say so thank you! So glad you enjoy them
🎼🎵You sling me right round, baby right round, like a pebble baby, right round round round!🎼🎵
That great video!
Imagine trying to hold the shield while getting slammed with full force sling shots?
Haha yeah it would be quite jarring I would imagine
6:39 the stone flew straight at you
Hahaha yeah I thought that may happen once or twice
Working on a fantasy world with giants who use rock slings. Imagine if that thing was three times as long with a bowling ball sized rock
Witness marks from speedy contact tend to polished areas on your ammo. I bet a walk down the road would yield a few wheel weights and your boys would love the scavenger hunt! A fire and a cast iron pan would enable you to make it any size and shape you want.
keep smashing it, home boy.
Thanks my dude 💪🏹
Your videos are awesome! And I even like the name Dash Rendar. The only scoundrel to give Han Solo a good run for his money as far as attitude. Favorite line from the comic book is “my name is guy with a blaster about to cook you”.
Thank you my friend! So glad you enjoy them and yes Dash is really one the coolest most mercenary characters in the EU if they would have made him the star in “outlaws” I would have bought it regardless of all the gameplay issues 😂
getcha a warhammer
Haha that’s next on the list for sure
This is what I have been waiting for! :)
Let’s gooo 💪🪨🪨🪨🪨🪨
Another fun video! You know you have to make some sling bullets and try with those, right? Otherwise it's like using arrows with a sharpened wood point.
P.S. The loreal joke was hilarious!
Thanks my friend! I know I know I am working on getting some denser materials to set up, in just need to make a good “catch” so they don’t disappear into the hay.
@@dashrendar5320 True. It's a bit more expensive to replace than picking up a rock off the ground. 🙂
Great video! You should really think of wearing safety glasses (and maybe something around the neck) when smashing things with Grond. Ricochet from debris is a serious danger.
The power of the sling
💪🪨
Maybe get a heavy gauge sprocket from a farm store. Sling it like a hand launched clay bird. Or get a ball hitch off your truck. Or a broken off PTO shaft?
Haha those are all good
Ideas. That Would actually be fun. The most
Devastating homemade sling projectile
I would have loved to see how the shield fared against lead shot. I would bet something like that might punch into the shield.
One takeaway is never get your face too close to your riot shield with something like those rocks incoming.
Haha that is solid advice indeed
its not necessarily that you're breaking the shield, but the wobbling in slow motion is going to be felt and stop an approach.
When we get the pitchforks, don't forget the slings. Got it
When your multiple personalities start arguing and fighting over who is best....love to see it. One day, he'll have to do one where each of them is questioned by FBI guy
That would actually be a super hilarious bit
@@dashrendar5320 or create a new character who is having a group therapy session with them all
You may want to get some actual sling bullets and try those.
Haha I know I know i know…history channel on a. Shoestring budget…one day
Even if it don't go through, the guy is gonna stain his pants seeing that metal tip sticking in front of his face. Lmao.
Hey, first time seeing you're channel, great video quality, wishing you luck with TH-cam!
Thanks so much. So glad you enjoyed it. Ima having a blast making some fun goofy videos 😁
GROND! GROND! GROND! GROND! GROND!
Grond!!!
More sling videos please
Done and done

Rock go burr!
😂
Poor Grond 😢
I feel sorry for him
I’ve had to use polycarbonate shields as a prison officer, ours were supposed to stop a 12G shotgun round.
6mm or 8mm.
Sexyranger and sir gains
Name a better duo
Want to add a curve to that? Heat gun, something with a nice curve, and ratchet straps. ... Maybe. Dunno how it will work with that thickness, but it works wonders on wood.
Yeah, I used the heat gun but it’s just so thick and large I feel like I needed a larger heavier duty one. It was just not changing shape much at all
@@dashrendar5320 Ooo, that'd be tricky.
Nice shot! How much do you practice a week with the sling to get accuracy like that? At my best I could hit that sheild like 25% of the time.
Thanks my friend! I try to get a few hundred throws in a week depending on how my arm is feeling
Try some round fishing weights for lead projectiles, they won't be all that expensive, try your local bait shop or fishing specialty store.
I'd love to see how it stands up to a staff sling.
Soon maybe haha
the biggest problem with slings is the amout of time you are out of cover to use it for full effect.
You can snap shot it pretty fast but you do need to be fully exposed regardless for a short time
I wonder if there was less flexibility if it would make the plexi less durable.
You can try will stelter he's a youtube who would probably love to work on your weapon
Or just grab a cheap anvil and wooden mallet and a blowtorch and you could give it a whirl as well it's super easy and fun
I think it should be a fundamental skill to do rough maintenance on your weaponry whether blade rope or firearm
Yeah, I agree. I think I’m going to invest in some stuff and trying to make a little video. See if I can repair it.
@dashrendar5320 if your worried about your kids or maybe animals you could try and induction coil heater
I believe they are more expensive but use electromagnetic stuff to heat the metals but if you touch it on accident you won't be hurt quite as bad or if at all
Great video. The shield deformation with the largest stone/sling is insane. I wonder if you have a way to measure the force that stone delivered.
Yeah, it was nuts. All I have to do is a little bit of math. I just need to get the weight and then I need a speed sensor so I will try to see if I can figure it out once I get a proper sensor for speed.
Now I want to see the half kilo lead projectils being used, the simple rock got so much energy than the shield seemed jello.
@@TamasMateffy I say half a kilo because the Balear slinger had the biggest projectile as a mina in weigth, and I think its about half a kilo.
random idea for a video clay arrow heads fired in the pit already attached, but the shaft is of green (waterlogged throughout as to prevent Buring) shaft is sticking out and away from the heat.
I've got a lot more respect for the riot shield.
And I feel better about the arrows from the last video.
Hahaha glad to hear it!! 💪🏹
So, I suppose the way to do this is to have one guy trick-shooting three arrows into the shields at once and then another guy slinging and the shields will basically blow up.
Hahaah team work makes the dream work
HAMMAR!!!
💪🪨
Man that longer sling with the bigger rocks are going to hurt the guys arm holding that, I wonder if it could even break their arm, there is just so much energy transfer.
Yeah, and even hurt my arm from throwing it. It feels so crazy with like a two or 3 pound rock. It’s exhausting haha
Maybe try a small projectile? Like with a rifle that is large caliber but small projectile?
I will try again with lead or a much denser projectile for sure
Lead loaded shilleghleghe
