  • Tour one of the most famous (and beautiful!) cob buildings in the world! The Unique Cob Cottage is on Mayne Island, BC and is the 4th most wish-listed property on Airbnb.
    Unique Cob Cottage on Airbnb:
    www.airbnb.ca/...
The Cob Cottage is a fully permitted, 2-storey, load-bearing cob structure that was built by Cobworks in 1999.
    Cobworks:
    www.cobworks.com/
Cob is an environmentally friendly mixture of clay, sand, and straw that can be used in many different climates to create green buildings with organically shaped walls.
To learn more about cob as a natural building material, check out the video we share a couple of months ago:
    • Building with Cob - A ...
This cottage is on the grid with a well, septic tank, and hydro power. They use a woodstove for heat.
We felt super lucky to be able to meet Alexis and her family, and tour their cob cottage. It's an incredibly beautiful space and we hope you enjoy checking it out.
It's nice to see so much interest in green buildings, and to see that this cob structure has been standing for almost 20 years and still looks brand new!
Maintenance on the cob house is done by Bryce from Dreamweavers Collective:

This is my dream. To one day be able to design my own place out in the woods that can cut down on waste and use recycled materials. Then be self-sustaining.

Beautiful home. *Perfect for the peaceful life in nature.*
It's good that the owner is renting out the house to visitors. In this way many more people can experience this home from inside.
Cob buildings with bamboo fiber, or hemp fiber, or carbon fiber would be very strong. Might be even stronger than the concrete that cracks from temperature changes during the winter time.

Hi, I wish you would have introduced yourself.
This building material in Germany is known as leicht lehm (light loam), except the same material is pressed by hand as a filler between post and beam construction, or pressed as an infill into a woven lattice of branches or slats of wood. That process is called wattle and daub in England.

Centuries old traditional knowledge rediscovered. To revive this knowledge more designer houses shld be built of this Once common, Indian rural homes were mosly built of this material, though basic not designer such as this one. Villagers believe clay keeps house cool in summer, warm in winter.

A well and septic tank does not mean " on the grid " it means you have sewer and water. If you are connected hydro, you are on the electrical grid.
Off the grid you means you are not connected to public utilities.

Adobe homes are almost the exact same, except i don't think they use as much straw.
They make them into bricks and once the brick walls are set they layer the exterior with an extra coating of clay so you don't see the bricks.

    Linda casa.
    💚💛💙

I was born and brought up in city, but in last year i got chance to visit a village which have this kind of and less fancy very basic house, and i was surprised how (although out of option) the villagers, made most use nature and its ingredients.

Even the statues they made of themselves were made of those natural material, which still stands today except for their noses being shot off to destroy their true identity

Fully permitted? How on earth did they get those railings without balusters through? Maybe it's right for the area, but it sure doesn't look especially safe.

What? I stayed there like 3 years ago. Was really sad cause my dog felt down from the balcony inside and died: he smashed its head against the corner of a small table 😢 not jocking.

I love it...too bad that we can't have anything cool in Texas..anything that would help us save money, is out...

10 bucks says it would stand up to high winds, tornadoes, and hurricanes better than the sticks and paper the United States like to use as construction material.

This house is 20+ years old and still looks great. Now compare it to McMansions of the same age...

why isn't this being done in America?
California, Nevada, AS would be the best places for these homes.
