      Light to dark works with my workflow better since you can’t go back with ink. Your paper is the lightest you can go, then the ink then the darker ink. It might be since I don’t have a lot of good paper but still.

    I would still always go light to dark for the most part (sometimes I do lay down certain darks first but broadly speaking) by layering the lighter marker to the darkest color it can get and then moving on to a darker one creates more depth and smoother gradients (of course that doesn't matter as much in super sharp high contrast works) also working with a lighter blue in can add an even lighter green as an undertone to bring more variation but it will be harder to do if we start with the darkest color

You could potentionally also make them yourself from scratch. If you really want fancy plastic ones that look aesthetically more pleasing and neat then I’d reccomend Amazon yea.

    Just got my first set of alcohol markers. Coming from digital art this will be a little difficult because I’m used to being able to throw down my base colors then adjust the values from there in regards to shading. I did a little test drawing when I first got them and went about it like I usually would when drawing digitally and all the tones were flat and dark because I couldn’t lighten them lol. Looking forward to learning how to use these markers effectively

    Definetely a lot of usefull tipps on this, great for beginners for sure💪
    But some of them i feel like come down to prefference and artstyle.
    For example if you want to go for a cell shading style, blending would not work for you.
    And some people can shade better when knowing where the brighter points are to then put the shadows down.
    But still very usefull tipps👍

    • @jannmoon
      @jannmoon 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should almost always use references, even if creating a new creature or whatever- it only looks good to people if it is based in reality so you can get things like shading, textures at least, even as far as how muscles and bones work together . Drawing mechs - you want them to appear that they could exist and that requires somewhat functional looking connections, hinges, exhaust panels and other real things that are combined in creative and new ways. Final note, those old masters sometimes just did a portrait of someone - no one said they were copying or unoriginal or untalented . Combine references in new and exciting. Ways + combine the techniques and nuances of the artists you admire into your own personal way too!! Literally the no references for any reason is the worst “advice " ive come across on here over and over .

    • @Velociiraptor
      @Velociiraptor ปีที่แล้ว +1

      References are great! Every good artist uses them.
      Even in popular animated movies they had to use references to make the drawings look right.

    • @feralshojo
      @feralshojo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@traceyla3914 "correct" is what your preference is. I occasionally do both, depending whether I'm looking for a softer, more blended effect (light to dark) or a more contrasty look (dark to light). I guess most artists do light to dark because you can always add more shadows, while removing them when adding them first and then realizing they're too strong doesn't work half as well. You can still blend them out, but why correct mistakes when you can avoid them from the beginning.

    When you said to start with the darker colors first so the light can blend with them... I felt called out lol I just did a drawing a few nights ago where I was getting frustrated why the shadows weren't blending right, but thanks to this video I know why now. I just started using alcohol markers so I'm still adjusting.
