      I totally agree. A lot of reviews are PCP, CO2 or guns that cost $800 to $1500. Nice to see a good review on a gun most of us can afford.

    Happy New Year John...Wingman here. Love the side mounted bipod that I purchased on your advice from your website. Mounting was quite easy and the results were way beyond my expectations. Groupings you could cover with a quarter at 35-40 yards on my Gamo Magnum. Will be adding pods to my Sig ASP. Have a safe, healthy and prosperous new year.

    I have both the swarm maxxim and the swarm magnum. Depending on what pellet you run you can get about 19 fpe from the maxim and 31fpe from the magnum. As far as scopes go I have blown through about 10 different scopes with the magnum. This includes Athlon, Luepold, Vortex, SWFA, and Discovery scopes. So I decided to invest in 2 of those zero recoil mounts and BINGO!!! No more blown out scopes. Only took me a year to find out lol. Anyways, good review on one of my favorite bb air rifles.

    I've had this gun for 5 months. I upgraded the scope to a Hammers - Air Gun Rifle Scope 3-9x40AO Magnum. Since then my shots have been at a consistent dead center at 25 yards. My backyard is only so big, so that's where I have it sighted. That's using Crosman Premier .22 cal Domed Ultra Magnum 14.3 gr. pellets. I also have heavier grained Gamo pellets that perform just as well at the same distance. Note: I took a robin on the very top branch of a tree at 98.7 yds. (I used my range finder). Thought I missed it until it dropped.
    I qualified Expert in the army with an M16-A1 with open sights, but that was 33 years ago. My eyesight isn't nearly as good as it once was (I wear glasses now). This gun is just that good. It has a LOT of power for a break barrel, and doesn't break the bank. It does take about 200 shots for the 60 lb pull to settle down. At first I didn't think I'd be able to cock it. Once it breaks in, it's awesome.

The most accurate pellet it likes is Air Arms 16gr

    • @AirgunDetectives
      @AirgunDetectives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the most fun, especially for plinking and target practice with the Maxxim Swarm, if you like a magazine. They are really east to cock 27-30 lbs. They shoot realistically 700 fps with a 14.0 gr pellet. The .177 are good with a heavy pellets but it's much more practical to go with the .22 caliber. I will be releasing a video on the Bone Collector Swarm soon. Basically the key for ultimate accuracy on the Gamos is the upgraded trigger screw and bipods.👍

    Nice review, thanks for the information. I just got into break barrel airguns, and i heard you say never pull the trigger without a pellet in the barrel. I did not know that, and have cleaned the barrel two or three times and dry fired it. Could I have damaged the gun??

    • @AirgunDetectives
      @AirgunDetectives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a general rule and it should not hurt the rifle if it unintentionally happen a few times. Gamo claims there rifles can be dry fired. The reason it could do damage is break barrels use a piston to create air pressure in the chamber. When the rifle is cock the piston is pushed backwards toward the trigger and catches on the sear. The spring or gas piston is fully compressed. Once you pull the trigger the sear is released and the piston is violently thrown forward into the air chamber which creates the high pressure. The pressure builds within a fraction of a second and forces the pellet out of the barrel. If you dry fire the rifle there is no pellet to create that back pressure and the piston impacts much harder into the front of the air chamber. That all being said I had a Gamo 220 hunter, spring piston and I dry fired that many times with no issues. I just wouldn't make a habit out of it because it could do some potential harm or cause the piston seal to wear out prematurely. Thanks for watching!

      The Gamo RRR thing is a joke, doesn't absorb recoil at all.
      The Diana mount works, and surprisingly it holds zero, just be careful tightening it up. I would actually recommend lapping the rings on it if the scope is an expensive one though, it will ensure perfect fit. Don't tighten the rings down much, I would go the minimum recommended torque, probably under 20 inch pounds. The scope won't move back in the rings on the Diana mount because it completely eliminates recoil, so no use risking scope damage from over tightening.

    • @AirgunDetectives
      @AirgunDetectives  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to look at accuracy first. The style of pellets don't make a significant difference as far a hunting. You need to look for most FPE and accuracy combined. Each rifle is specific. The FTT 14.66 worked the best in mine but you might have different results with your rifle.

      I see what you mean about accuracy now.
      Been using the latest Walmart exclusive Ruger impact Max elite with Gamo rockets and crosman premier hollow points, some of which are customized, and never had much of a problem hitting a large raccoon head at 20 yards or maintaining decent grouping on Targets.
      Then I tried using ruger's cheapest pellets at Walmart. Maybe they will shoot straighter out of the swarm Magnum. Got a great deal and I'll be picking one up in a few days. Hope that experimental loading mechanism doesn't bust too soon. There's been quite a few editions of the mechanism from Gamo over the years and they've yet to patent it. So good luck to us both on that.

    Great review. I suspect by adding a heavier scope and areas where weight can be added (be creative) the groupings "should tighten up...Personally I only have a Gamo Accu. 22 and it is the most accurate springer I own. I have many "vintage Beemans" R1s, R10s, R9s break barrels and still even with the great Rekord trigger, I still am unable to consistantly get an honest hole in one 5 shot groups out to 35 yards which I can with the Accu .22. I can only imagine if it had a Rekord or AirArms trigger in it..While not to highjack your post on my opinions on fpe. My Accu .22 sits by door my door as a go to gun. And I have such high confidence in knowing where my mildots are set. All normal airgun game is in danger out to 60 yards away. And my 18-30fpe airguns mainly stay in the safe. I turned down my "vintage" Beeman Crow magnum to around 15fpe, which initially came fully pressurized at around 30fpe. The Theoben H.E. air piston was great, you could turn down the air piston (which came maxed out per Beeman standards) but could easily be tuned down to mitigate hold sensitivity and then able to apply bar pressure with the little hand held pump it came with. I never did need to add more air...Would be nice if newer air pistons made it simple to de-tune or add air, without taking stock off. It definitely can be done. It seems at least with mechanical and air/gas pistons the one's shooting around 14-16fpe at the muzzle offer plenty of power for airgun game, so long as you can judge ranges and have a good mildotted scope. If it was easier to market accuracy, then fpe that would be a good thing. The company's seem to be marketing to the first time buyers, we are on to their over inflated rates, less forgiving hold due to the science of recoil? Old timers know the physics that are involved in achieving high fps, and know the negative side effects, so market to us!! I can shoot good groups with my "kickers" but everything needs to line up perfectly to get off that perfect hold, especially in hunting situations. Make some more 14-16fpe breakers/underlevers! The "chart" that says how much fpe is required to humanely take an animal, really doesn't mean much. I have defied it many times. What is required is confidence in what you are shooting, will hit where your aiming.....

    • @AirgunDetectives
      @AirgunDetectives  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I couldn't agree more. You can have all the FPE in the world but if you are not accurate with the gun it means nothing. I appreciate you watching and thanks for the comments. I have an ACCU in .22 as well. I added my trigger screw and even a second screw in the SAT trigger to adjust the first stage. I even have a gas piston kit for it but I just haven't had the time to install it.

      Maybe a Hawke? That's what I'm getting. I currently run a Zerotech Thrive which is nice for the money, but don't do what I did and run it on a Gamo magnum with no ZR mount. It nearly destroyed the scope but I took it off in time and had to remove the zoom ring and tighten the screws that hold the eye bell on because it was wobbling. The scope walked back in the Sportsmatch rings, and the stop pin deformed and rode up over the stop pin hole and munched the scope rail. ZR mount is the only solution that actually works with these magnum springers.

    Please enlighten me. I shoot a .300 Weatherby magnum and have never lost a scope because of recoil. Why is recoil such an issue with this air rifle?

    • @liquidsteel
      @liquidsteel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because a powder burner rifle recoil pushes in one direction. Magnum springgun not only pushes back but the reverse recoil when the piston slams into compression tube is so harsh it can even make the scope slide through the rings. And walk on the mount. It's kinda like an impact gun movement, but a back and forth. To include vibrations. It will certainly trash most normal scopes.

    • @AirgunDetectives
      @AirgunDetectives  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually explain that in some of the videos. What you have in a breakbarrel rifle is a "Reverse" recoil. When you cock the rifle it compresses the spring or gas piston and it engages the sear which locks it in place until you pull the trigger. Once the trigger is pulled, the sear releases the piston which actually goes forward and impacts into the front end of the air chamber, compressing the air to force the pellet out of the barrel, the piston then bounces back after that impact. Most traditional scopes for centerfire rifles are designed for a rear recoil. The break barrels have almost a double recoil in that the gun is thrown forward and then backwards. Most scopes are not built for that forward or "Reverse" recoil. Trust me I have destroyed many. I hope that answers your question and thanks for watching!!!

      @@AirgunDetectives Hello AD. I first saw the question from yeahitsme210 I was to reply,but you did so for me. Good explanation. That is almost word for word i would have explained.. However there can be a "third recoil" on a magnum spring or gas ram. If you use a heavy pill,any case,say a JSB .22 cal 18.13grn, or a JSB Jumbos 25.39 grn you will get another "slight" recoil as the pellet or what ever you shoot will give you a slight "push" as it wants to exit in a hurry.. This was explained to me by a "pcp" airgun. I was told to dry fire the gun with out a pill. It was safe to do so. It made a very loud bang more than I expected,but not much of a recoil. Then loaded a 230 grn lead slug and I got a recoil of about my .308. So yes, believe there can be a exit recoil from a strong breakbarrel air gun. Oh My pcp is Hatsan Hercules .454 caliber.. Yes it is heavy,bulky,but is strong enough for and exceeds my requirements..

    Would you recommend the Magnum or Maxxim for a female who is squirrel hunting?

      Hi Jennifer...They both would be very effective but the Maxxim is a much easier cocking effort, around 30lbs. The Magnum is more difficult to cock around 50lbs. You do get more FPE out of the Magnum but the Maxxim still has plenty of FPE for small game hunting or pest control. Thank you for watching👍

      Airgun Detectives thanks for responding! I was thinking the magnum might be too hard to cock. Thanks again!
