  • Home Massage After A Total Knee Replacement * Free * Fast * Easy
The first 24-72 hours following a total knee replacement surgery can be the most challenging time. Get plenty of rest! Sleep well, eat well, and hydrate well. The road ahead will be long and full of challenges, but the better you prepare the easier it will be. Using a rolling pin to self massage the thigh and calf along with proper positioning to reduce pain and improve extension will go a long way in helping you prepare for physical therapy.
If you have specific questions about the first couple days after surgery post your questions in the comments below and search this channel for lots more videos on the topic of total knee replacement recover and rehabilitation.

Pre-surgery I combed the web for post-surgery information. Everything from individual experiences, to doctors, professionals in all aspects of the pieces of the TKR. A lot of good information and various levels of expertise in the video presentation, clarity, accuracy and specificity. Animated, homespun to slick, and everything in between. I’m 6 days post-op and I’ve discovered a few things I wish were made more clear about the surgery and immediate realistic expectations from the surgery side. And that’s after a great team and a surgery experience that I wouldn’t trade. It’s just that this is a routine thing for the medical profession and they probably don’t want to scare you. But it tends to make everything banal and perfunctory, which leaves me still doing my own research and education about the first 24 hours, first week, etc, etc. I want to do my best for myself in the recovery and rehab but exactly what does that look like, when you’re also struggling with the procedure recovery, swelling, etc. I said all that to say this. This channel is the most informative, specific, articulate, visual, compassionate, encouraging presentations I’ve found. It’s a great adjunct to my therapist, who is very similar in his care and explanation. So I know what the issue is, the best response and how it all fits together. Thank you so much and I heartily recommend.

Oh my goodness. You just blew me away with your kindness. I create videos to share exactly the kind of information you mention. I love being a physical therapist and if I can help others get new ideas I feel as though I am blessed for the opportunity. Thank you so much for your kindness and your feedback. It is a comment like this that puts fuel in my tank and motivates me to work even harder to help people like you.

I too, had a good surgeon but still feel like I don't have nearly enough information. Everyone should have you! I have not slept in two weeks due to calf pain. I'm thrilled to have found you. My in home therapist was great, but your knowledge has been amazing & I am so grateful I found you. My pt said most patients do not receive adequate info pre/post surgery, & I would agree. Thank you so so much!

Dear Tony., I am massaging my calf and thigh for 15 minutes. Sorry I had much discomfort without a pillow underneath my knee. I did elevate my leg above my nose! It’s slow recovery but I am getting there. 4 weeks into surgery just concerned about getting 90 degree.

I use to do outdoor walk 4 mile 6 days a week, with my osteoarthritis left knee. 2 miles in the morning and 2 miles in the after noon. After my TKR of left leg, how soon I can start outdoor walk for 15 mnts in the morning and 15 mnts in the evening of course with the help of walker and one of my family member escorting me during that potential walk? Your answer shall highly be appreciated.

Yesterday he gave me the go ahead, to start. I still have quite a bit of swelling in the knee, so what exercises do you suggest I start with. I am still using a walker to get around/

    @ Tony
I just had my second knee replacement surgery on my right knee and at present going through the recovery stage.
My first was 8 months ago - the left knee. But the right knee was in a very bad condition, hence the surgery took longer to perform.
Your information on the use of the rolling pin was new to me and well appreciated.
I am in my 3rd week post surgery, I am walking but with the aid of a walking stick.
The only thing I am finding difficulty is the standing up from a sitting position, I have to use my frame or walking stick.
How or what method can I use to be effective in being able to stand up from a sitting position, without having to use any aid.
Or is it to early for me to attempt this motion.
    Await your response

Great question. Often tightness in the hip and ankle are what is limiting your ability to stand from a low or soft seat. The goal is always to get your nose over your toes. I will see if I can publish some videos specifically on this topic. I know I have recorded them, but I don't see them on my channel. Stay tuned and thanks for the comment.

I am on day 15 post op Total Knee replacement (revision). I can't get the bend past 90 degrees. I am going to try laying on the floor as shown in another video. My physical therapist keeps canceling appointments. I am icing through the day and walking quite a bit with the walker. I use a strap under my foot several times a day to pull my knee into a bending position. My foot hurts and my toes are swollen and black and blue. I am starting to fear that I am getting too far behind. Anyone have suggestions, I am getting a bit down and concerned. I have been watching these videos and trying the suggestions, the pain meds don't touch it most days. Thank you.

    • @totaltherapysolutions

What does your therapist suggest? There are several nerves that could cause some symptoms but I find that shin pain is often associated with the new alignment of the knee and the tibial implant component. I have a video on shin pain after knee replacement if you search the channel.

My mother got a double knee replacement one knee on 23rd and another on 27th, Jan 2021. She has a full extension from day 1 or 2, flex is about 95-100 degrees for both knees. The surgeon said there were significant osteophytes in the right knee and a few in the left. My mom is suffering from calf muscle pain and a lot of pain while flexing and extending in the inner parts of her knee... the part of the knee that rubs up against each other... not sure how to explain to you the location.. I looked up a leg muscle diagram.. it says its a ligament. Can you tell me why that hurts and if this gonna go away?

I’ve had both knees replaced, and although uncomfortable, I started physio straight away! The 1st knee has an almost normal bend. The 2nd (3 weeks ago) was at 110’ at 2 weeks. Physio is vital! Pre op physio is also important to keep your muscles in the best order; I used my static bike. All not pleasant, but if you want the best outcome, put the work in!

I am having TKR outpatient done next month, I have already had my hip done 10 years ago, and spent a week in the hospital, (side entry) it was grueling, and took about 6 months to heal, and a year for total healing, I am nervous about this new outpatient routine, seems to me that one size may not fit all, but I remain cautiously optimistic....just hope it's not like that 90's 24 hr childbirth fad that kicked women out of the hospital right after childbirth, to save money,,,not a good thing.

    • @totaltherapysolutions

If you think you may have issues returning home or you don't have enough help definitely talk to a case manager to see if a short episode in skilled nursing is possible. Even an outpatient procedure can result in a skilled nursing facility admission. Unfortunately you may have to be your own advocate in this situation.
      Let me know what happens.
